Ventura Missing Dock icons ... How do I restore them?

I have an alias to the downloads folder. The idea is that the apple fan/list/whatever display has been useless from day one. An icon in the dock should open a finder window to download ...simple! I have no idea why 'open a finder window' is still not an option alongside the fan stuff ... I digress!

Since the Ventura upgrade ... the icons have gone, to be replaced with a generic white document rectangle. I can see the Alis in a folder window ... it looks like a folder ... but the alia in the dock does not!

So far I have tried

  • removing the shortcut from the dock and dragging the alias back to the dock ... still white.
  • Creating an alias to an app (keynote ... waiting for a minute of spinning pizza) and then dragging the keynote alias to the doc but I cannot add that alias to the dock (do not use keynote at any rate ... but still unexpected.)
  • Creating an alias to another folder in my user area (not a cloud location). This created the alias immediately with the correct icon in finder ... but dragging that to the dock causes the dock to display the generic white again.

I am unsure where to go next ... help appreciated.

Thanks.

I found a solution. The problem does not lie on the alias but the folder icon. You need to replace the icon of the original folder, then create an alias and drag it into the dock. after that it works as previously to open the folder up right away.

How i solved the download icon bug: Very weird, but i just copied the original icon from the original download folder and pasted it back again (but with a step in between, so the metadata is not the same):

  • open folder info panel: CMD + I
  • select folder icon on top left so it is outlined
  • CMD + C
  • open photoshop, create new file (right dimensions are pre-selected), paste with CMD + V, select all with CMD + A, copy again with CMD + C [alternatively, you can download an icon somewhere from the internet like macosicons.com and drag it right into the info panel icon]
  • go back to folder info, select icon again so you see the outline again and paste with CMD + V
  • done, now create alias and drag into dock.

I know that not everybody has Photoshop, but that's what worked for me. I tried with preview as well, but it seems it does not recognise the image data.

I'm happy that it is solved and i could help you.
