Impossible to empty bin !

This is really strange. I have external HDDs (Sandisk SSD) and I can't empty bin. Just want to erase things I don't need. And always getting messages that "item in use", "privileges" etc.

Nothing is in use, all normal files and folders. I tried even with terminal sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash First - although I wrote correct password, it wrote incorrect, second attempt it wrote "operation not permitted"

What is going on ?? Such a basic essential thing like erasing what I want and emptying trash.

Nothing is "in use". And it is not a question of one particular disc but any of them.

Restarting does not help. I even formatted one disc but it did not help either. Some new super bug in new OSX ?

Two things that jump out

1 - Could you Apple please fix this bug?

A - We are only follow users helping or attempting to assist fellow users. We do not work for Apple but only volunteer our time to impart what we know to be possible solutions and or workarounds.

Beyond that, we can not change what and how Apple has decided to make available on Apple Computers or Software

2 - new OSX.

A - Technically, OS X naming ceased in about 2016 with the release of Sierra version 10.12. A minor point I do realize and unimportant as to this computer issue

Suggest the user follow the below 7 Steps in the order they are presented and Test at each step of the issue persists or not.

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drives from loading

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

5 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

6 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

7 - Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

The application is free or paid from added features.

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

So I installed demo of some "Clean my Mac" app and the trash was erased by it immediately. But I am not going to pay 100 USD to be able to empty the bin ?

If so , why are we forced to used our "Apple ID" every time when coming to this forum ? ;)

A friendly piece of advice and this is not a Off Handed Suggestion

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster and comprise the Operating System

Certain Applications maybe available on the Apple Apps Store - this only means the Developer is prepared to pay Apple a portion on each sale. What the Application may do to the computer is up to the User to check this out before purchase

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

This will include CleanMyMac

Seems really hopeless. External drive Lacie formatted exFAT and again impossible to empty trash Deleting goes on forever and when I try to delete some items immediately, again that nonsense message:

Nothing is locked etc. I tried what someone recommended here - connected the disc to PC and the trash was emptied in half second. Ok, so when I need to to something, I will connect to PC ... easy ... Thank you Apple ...

Is this drive used for Time Machine Backup ?

Is the drive formatted as APFS format.

Is the user attempting to Cherry Pick specific Files on the TM Drive to remove the items ?

If the above outlined situation is accurate - this can nor be done.

The only way I know to achieve this is to Reformat the Entire Drive, which will erase everything.

Then, the user will need to start a New TM Backup Regime for zero

No, this is normal drive in exFAT format. No Time Machine etc. I reformatted one of the drives actually and still the same thing occurs again.

Thank you for clarifying.

On what computer was the drive reformatted ?

Doing so from a MS Windows computer and formatting as exFat may not be the same as Reformatting on an Apple Computer.

The Partition Map on MS Windows is not always the same as a Partition Map put done on Apple Computers.

We understand that something is very wrong if one can’t do a simple thing as emptying the trash and this happens in multiple drives.

But this is not what the vast majority of users experience, in fact yours is the only such report I have seen.

It stands to reason that something peculiar to your system is likely at play here. We can try to help figuring it out but we need information

Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here.

Use the “additional text” button and paste the report into the text box.

And do NOT fall for things like cleanmymac! It is one of the worst things you could let loose on your mac.

There are times when we mere mortals " think should be " is not the same as " is possible."

This is especially evident when working in the Apple Eco-System and then encounter this type of computer issue.

Added and again in a friendly manner - CMM is a big No No to be let loose on any computer.

It would the equivalent to installing AntiVirus software for a Non Existing issue in macOS

Impossible to empty bin !
