My new iPhone 14 Pro Max cannot focus the camera in ANY app that needs it. Check deposit, barcode reader, Notes scan etc. I was hoping iOS 16.1.1 would fix it but Apple just doesnt care about my $1500 worthless camera.

They replaced the camera in mine. It took an hour while I waited. I don't know that it mattered, but I had already called tech support and they had ran diagnostics and gave me a reference number. When I got there, they ran the diagnostics again and took more photos (he said required to document the problem). He said after all that, that it qualified for replacement. Again, they only replaced the camera, NOT the phone. They had to remove my screen saver to make the repair, which was disappointing since I I just bought it and it was a pricy one. But, I'm just glad it works now.
It looks like a lot of users just don’t know about the problem because they don’t use 3rd party apps with a camera feature. A friend of mine has an iPhone 14 pro max for 3 months and didn’t even know about the problem before I asked him to check if that is exist on his iPhone. And yes, he has the same problem.
Absolutely infuriating- we’re on iOS 16.3.1 and hardly a peep online about these crushing camera issues in any of the expected places. Suggestions like “restart your iphone”, and “don’t pinch” as solutions - so basically don’t use the camera? I’ve upgraded from an iPhone 11 pro max to this beautiful yet useless iPhone 14 pro max that has helped me miss countless photo opportunities & take crooked scans. I bought this phone specifically to enjoy the camera, since I take a lot of nature/ wildlife shots, yet this phone has turned taking pictures into complete guesswork as to how they will turn out, since it either constantly switches camera angles in the viewfinder, or shows me a remarkably blurry image so I take it out of desperation before I miss the shot, and the image is captured perfectly clearly half the time- so it’s only out of focus in the camera app through the viewfinder! And the video quality is just a complete joke- my iPhone 6S could do the same.
iOS 17 and its getting slightly better… Many apps still cant focus. But there is first few that are able to. Instagram and messenger are working fine with changing lenses to focus but for example whatsapps still not working.. I think its really developers problem and they need to implenet right solution to make everything work.. Its really frustrating that I have iPhone 14 pro that costs about $ 1000 and has been out for about almost year.. At the beginning when i got my 14 pro I thought its new it would get fixed soon.. But i was so wrong.. Cant tell if its completly Apples fault or lack of work from 3rd app developers but somebody not doing their work correctly!!!

Thank you for your comment. I was seriously considering “up” grading to a 13 from my 14PM, except I want the larger size. Apple discontinued the 13 Plus, Pro, and Pro Max when they released the 14. I was wondering if this issue would show up on older phones when updated. That points to software for sure then.
My camera focuses super sharp on anything about 1/2” away on Macro. I can see tiny fibers in my quilt. But it won’t focus with any other lens or distance. Photo is 1/2” away, macro, very low light.
I really wish I knew if the 15PM cameras are not like this or if they’re the same.

It’s definitely an iPhone 14 pro issue. I couldn’t scan a gift card on Amazon and found this. Tried my wife’s iPhone 12 max and it worked in seconds. This is ducked up.
Same issue! Two iPhone 14 pro maxes and one 14 pro. My pro max camera will not focus at all in Snapchat, which I use daily. During video and photo taking, focus goes in and out on the pro max and the pro. Video “jumps” and focus goes in and out. I’m a photographer and use my photo/ video on my phone all day, every day. This is soooo unacceptable. I want my iPhone 11 Pro Max back!!!!
Same here. I moved to from an 11 Pro Max to the 14 Pro Max, camera is CRAP! I heard Sony is the one supplying the camera’s? They’re crap regardless, but can anyone verify this? Am I wrong? This camera won’t focus on ANYTHING. Worst upgrade yet. 🙄
I agree. I want my 11 pro max camera back as well. I actually returned my first 14 pro max because I thought the camera was broken, that’s how bad it is! My replacement 14 pro max is the same. Super grainy photos, lots of noise, very jumpy auto focus but manual focus will never work. Very disappointed for such an expensive phone.
I trust that this is a software issue that will get priority in the next release? Just received my new iPhone 14 Pro Max upgrading from iPhone 12 Pro Max where scanning bar codes were near instant. Needs to tweak hardware software collaboration in this instance… Hope there is a response soon
Same here. I’m absolutely devastated that I sent my iPhone 12 Pro Max to AT&T for trade in and can’t get it back. This 14PM camera is trash. It won’t focus at all. It jumps between lenses and only shows a large box over the entire viewing area. I can clearly see it’s not focusing. After 1.5 hrs with Apple Care+ in chat, they decided there is nothing wrong. I sent videos and photos showing the issues. But “diagnostics” were good so I can’t get any help. The rep even said she agreed with how angry I am and could see the blotchy, watercolor, graininess. It was very obvious that she had been told to say there’s nothing wrong. What happened to Apple Care + replacing devices? That wasn’t an option either!! Why am I paying for it then? I’m SO SICK over this - LITERALLY!! I cannot believe I lost my only camera with the 12PM because I fell for the hype about an even better camera, only to find out it was all lies. At least they could have used the same camera as the 12PM instead of whatever is in this 14PM. I am telling everyone I know to never buy an iPhone, unless you love purple, and want a phone that is obviously some sort of scam. Un———-believable!!
Yes 16.3 no fix! This is an absolute JOKE! I use the camera with 3rd party apps for a living and had to buy an extra phone just to do my job. Apple needs to get back to their roots and stop making 1000 mediocre products, make only a few AMAZING products like the early days. This is unacceptable.
Yep. Same problem here (iPhone 14 Pro Max, up to date iOS). Can’t focus on anything unless it’s 2-3 feet away while I’m using the camera in any app (other than the native camera app). Restarting has no effect.
I first noted this issue when I tried to re-verify my driver's license on our state's mobile ID app using my iPhone 14 Pro Max. The app developer told me they knew of the issue and were working on a fix, but then I tried to rent a U-Haul and had the same issue. ScannerPro app - same issue. Any 3rd party app seems to not be able to access the lens to focus. I chatted Apple Support, then did a phone call and finally went to an in-person visit to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store and was able to not only replicate the issue, but show that the app worked fine on the employee's iPhone 13 Pro Max. Same issues with my wife's 14 Pro. They keep wanting to blame the 3rd party apps. This is so frustrating!!!
It’s really ridiculous can’t use macro mode in most of the apps. Like certain apps need my ID photo to be fully covered inside the frame. I am unable to take the ID and credit card photos according to the requirement. Never have this issue before.
