Airpods pro 2 disconnecting when answering call

I just bought some airpods pro 2 yesterday. I’m currently using an Iphone Xs. Everytime I answer a call with the headphones they disconnect and take about 10-15 sec until they reconnect. I’m on ios 16.1.1. The store replaced me the airpods as they thought it’s a hardware the defect but it’s the same with the new pair. I called the apple support and they couldn’t **** me as well and told me to reset my phone and update it again with the computer but nothing helped. I’m really hoping that this is something that can be resolved with a software update otherwise I just threw 300€ into the waste. I read on reddit that multiple people have this issue using the iphone Xs. Please let me know if there is a fix ASAP

iPhone XS, iOS 16

Airpods Pro 2 latest firmware (6A301) + IPhone XS Max IOS 17 Problems Solved.

Hello good people in this forum,

I have logged in specifically to let all who have problems with the airpods pro 2 and IPhone XS Max know that the problems related to these have been fixed. However, in order to see this resolved you have to erase all content (format if you will) the IPhone completely. After erasing content, do not restore data from other devices, but rather use the ICloud to sync contacts and other data types. I have talked to Apple about this and we seemed to have managed to get the root cause of this aching problem many have encountered.

Post doing this, I have encountered a fully working, fully connected, and completely working voice call operations without all the previous behavior of disconnection from the IPhone and not being able to take in voice calls via the airpods.

I hope this finds you well,

David Bendayan

I'm using AirPods Pro (Model Number A2698, Version 5B58) with an iPhone Xs (iOS 16.2) and have been having the same issue with incoming calls as many of the previous posts.

Changing Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing to 'Bluetooth Headset' instead of the Automatic did not seem to fully resolve the issue (hard to say whether it actually made a difference at all because the issue seems somewhat sporadic).

I just changed AirPods Pro Settings > Automatic Ear Detection to OFF and the issue did not occur. For those who are still having problems, does changing Automatic Ear Detection to OFF resolve the issue for anyone else?

Sorry if this doesn't help others, but I (finally) found a fix that has worked for me -- none of the other suggestions from Apple / multiple phone calls to Apple / multiple in-person visits to the Apple store / online forums had helped me. Instead, this problem had persisted for months. I tried resetting different settings, disconnecting & reconnecting the bluetooth, trying out an entirely new pair of AirPods, etc. I'm sharing this fix in case anyone else might have the same issue I had...

I realized that my disconnection started around the time I switched from one phone carrier to another phone carrier. When I did so, I followed the recommended steps for switching to the e-SIM card on the new carrier. I believe that somehow, there were remnants of the prior carrier that my iPhone was trying to access for phone calls / Facetime audio calls. So, I went back into the carrier settings for the SIM cards & e-SIM cards and made sure to entirely delete & reset all information that was even potentially related to my prior cell carrier. This has fixed my problem for two months & counting. Hope this helps and good luck!

Same issue, iPhone XS and it’s impossible to have a call with the AirPods Pro 2nd Gen. I even got them replaced through support only to realise that I’ve just spent money on a device that’s not even compatible with my phone. This is a major issue faced by a lot of iPhone XS users. I’ve to manually reconnect them every time. I could make a call while they were connected and talk normally but now they keep connecting and disconnecting while I receive or make a call. I’ve tried everything, resetting the AirPods, resetting the iPhone, resetting the settings. Nothing works, and there no patch or fix from Apple yet. Hope it’s fixed soon or all I can do is listen to music, which too if interrupted by a call, gets spoiled as they wouldn’t play after it till I put the AirPods in the case and take them out again. This is disappointing.

If your AirPods Pro 2 are disconnecting when you answer a call, it can be frustrating, but there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this issue:

  1. Check Bluetooth Connection: Ensure that your AirPods Pro 2 are properly connected to your device via Bluetooth. Go to your device's Bluetooth settings and confirm that your AirPods are connected.
  2. Firmware Update: Make sure your AirPods Pro 2 are running the latest firmware. Sometimes, firmware updates include bug fixes that can address connectivity issues.
  3. Reset AirPods: You can try resetting your AirPods to their factory settings. To do this, go to your device's Bluetooth settings, forget your AirPods, and then put them back in their case. Open the case, press and hold the setup button on the back until the LED on the front blinks amber, then reconnect them.
  4. Check Call Settings: Ensure that call audio is set to route through your AirPods Pro 2. On your device, go to Call Settings and make sure your AirPods are selected as the audio output.
  5. Software Updates: Make sure your device's operating system is up to date. Sometimes, issues like this can be resolved with a simple software update.
  6. Background Apps: Close any unnecessary background apps that might be causing interference with your AirPods' Bluetooth connection.
  7. Signal Interference: Ensure that there are no electronic devices or objects interfering with the Bluetooth signal between your device and AirPods. Sometimes, physical obstructions or other devices can disrupt the connection.
  8. Contact Apple Support: If none of the above solutions work, it's advisable to contact Apple Support for further assistance. There could be a hardware issue with your AirPods Pro 2 that needs professional attention.

By following these troubleshooting steps, you should be able to resolve the issue of your AirPods Pro 2 disconnecting when answering calls.

I’ve noticed this also seems to happen if I try to answer a call when music is playing either on the phone or clicking the AirPod. After answering my xs continues to vibrate for like 10 seconds while the AirPods disconnect and reconnect before ending the call. I’ve missed a few important no caller id calls because of this. It does work occasionally. I believe I’ve noticed this happening with a music app playing (has happened with Apple Music and soundcloud for me) on 4G. Haven’t noticed this at home on the wifi yet. Currently on iOS 16.5 🫠

EDIT: AirPods Pro 2nd Gen, firmware version: 5E135
