Getting hacked with an iPhone or iPad is quite rare, and has so far been targeted. The tools are on the order of a million dollars, plus more per usage, so adversaries tend to be very well-funded.

Getting phished, or re-using a password and one of the uses getting compromised, or installing rubbish-grade add-on “security” apps with privacy leaks and variously with bugs, SIM jacking or SIM cloning, failure to use two-factor authentication, or other such, all are somewhat more common paths for compromise.

This is all separate from discussions of harassment and gaslighting and such, which are unpleasant or worse, but those do not involve device exploits or installed malware or such. Claims (false) of such access, yes, that’s common. Some common email scams are based on old passwords insecurely stored and then leaked, and bogus claims. (I get a couple of the “I have your password MyOldPassword123456, and I now control your camera — pay me ransom in cryptocurrency” scam mail messages per month, lately.)

Now if you’re an investigative journalist, political activist, senior memory of government or private organization, well-known dissident, or with access to confidential or sensitive data, you’ll want to obtain advice more specific to your situation than you’ll get here.

Confusing entirely benign and normal activity—or app or hardware issues—with “hacked” or ‘virus” Is also commonplace. Here, I’d bet on usage-caused heating, maybe a hardware issue. Backlights at full bright and heavy use gaming do get warm.

If this hacking has reportedly been going for years, nobody here will be able to resolve it.

Remove the add-on “security” apps. They can’t scan internal storage, and can’t scan secure network connections, so they’re just going to be causing more heat.

As for the heating on a new iPhone, make an appointment with the local Apple store and bring it in.

Using an iPhone heavily will cause it to heat.

Wi-Fi and video rendering and the display brightness will all cause heat.

The question here is how much.

Apple will have some experience judging how warm an iPhone should get under heavy load.

Generally, your iPhone heats up when the processor is working and will likely overheats when the processor is revved up to a hundred percent. In the case where an iPhone overheats after installing a new iOS update, most likely the update file is too big that it takes more time to be downloaded and installed.
