In PHOTOS how to expoert and import photos in sequence?

Hello,

I am getting more and more disappointed by apple mainly around PHOTOS & iCloud, so many things do not work .... it is crazy).

I try to do something very basic:

1.     Export (from MAC A) an album in sequence (the album is defined in a manual sequence)

2.     Import that album in another MAC B (PHOTOS) and display it in the same sequence as the original

Of course I export in sequence (pic 1, 2, 3, 4, etc) but when I import it goes total out of sequence and given I have a lot of albums I see there is no apparent logic, one display 1,2,3 and then 656, 657, and then 11 etc. The other album something totally different.

Also it is not the classical issue of 1, 10, 11….19, 2, 20, 21 etc

If someone has an idea it would be great !

Seems that Apple can't event do this....

thx

Regards,

Michael

hello Leonie, so first thank you, you seem more competent than the apple support....
I applied this on a mac with 20k photos and it worked but one problem remains....
The sorting is now going like 1, 10, 100, 101 to 109, 20, etc
An idea? I guess the script can be adapted to (probably add zeros in front of nor, eg, 001, 002, etc)

Many thx !

Michael, instead of batch exporting with sequential filenames you could prefix the titles in the album with padded numbers. Then export with the title as the filename.

When you export edited versions from Photos, they will keep the titles, and you can sort them by the title after reimporting.

For the photos in an album to be sorted the same in the Finder they should be sequentially titled as muguy mentioned.

That can be done several ways:

1 - using the Album method from the export per muguy.

2 - using sequential from the export window:

There's a 3rd way. You can arrange the photos in an album the way you want them and retitle them with this AppleScripts from users:

Batch Change Title to Text w/Padded Sequential Numbers

Batch Change Title to Capture Date-Description-Padded Sequential Numbers

Then export the photos using the Title as the new file name. That will put them in the same order as you had them in the album.

It would have worked in Photos 4 on Mojave, but since then the filename will no longer be used as the default title, when sorting the photos (Sorting Albums by Title in Photos - Chang… - Apple Community). You would have to copy the filename to the title field in the Info.

You could try to use an Apple Script to batch copy the filename stored the title.

Right-- it sorts alphabetically, but the sequencing uses numbers of different lengths instead of using 001, 002... 014 ... 123, etc. I have fixed this, outside of Photos, with GraphicConverter which has a batch renaming function. But it was still tedious, adding 00 to the first 9, and adding 0 to the second 100, so they all had 3 digit numbers. I could then use GraphicConverter to quickly copy all the file names to the titles. But I haven't figured out anything better.

Comment for Apple: So by Apple I need "to program" to have Photos (between apple devices) in order and I need to pay super premium Apple prices for this???? I find this absolutely crazy!

For the time being you could also simply write the numbers sequence numbers into the title of the photo.

And send feedback to Apple, as muguy suggested. Apple keeps improving Photos, and adding requested feature, albeit it may take a while until frequently requested features will be added. The very first version of Photos did not even allow us to sort the photos in the albums by the title or to add location markers.

Thx :-) this I did (of course) the export works well, my photo and count are in the right order.

The issue is when I import them, then there is no way to have then in the right (sequential) order (3 filter possible, name, date up, date down and order in name sequence does not work).

Try it (note: but make sure your original library order is customised = not in date order)
