Airpods Pro 2nd gen case battery drain

Hello everyone, I have recently got AirPods pro 2nd generation and I believe I am experiencing case battery drain issues to some extent. I used the AirPods without ANC and listened to music for 2 hours and realized that the case dropped from 85% to 72% to charge the AirPods from 95% to 100%. With this pace, I can never reach the advertised 30 hours of play time even without ANC. Interestingly, it seems like the case is not losing much battery when it is in idle mode, so not being used. Is this normal behavior or do you think there is smt wrong with my AirPods?

yesterday i tried this method. My case was 21% and the pods were at 100% when i started listening to music. Then i drained the pods till 72% and put them back into the case. I check an hour later and the pods were at 96% and the case was at 8%. Then i did not touch them again. After 18 hours i checked the airpods. The right airpod had 52% battery while the left one was at 0% and the case was completely dead. I don’t understand this at all. How can they lose so much battery and completely drain even when they are idle. The apple store is really far from my town and last time i went they claimed that everything was fine wit my airpods but this is really frustrating. I hope it resets itself somehow after this complete battery drain

I can confirm that what frustratedcstmr says does work, well at least it did for me anyway as mine have been fine since following these steps and case etc holds charge and only goes down a percent or 2 every couple of days if not used.

one thing I do get though is that when just playing music (no mic etc involved or calls etc) the right AirPod seems to still lose charge more rapidly than left. When at 74% on left, the right is down to 67% etc. I understand that if using mic etc it will bring down one more than other but I don’t use mic and only listen to music so unsure why they aren’t losing charge about the same. Any ideas?

My understanding with tws (true wireless stereo) earbuds, the way they work is that usually one earbud (usually the right earbud) is the one connected tu your phone and relays another bluetooth signal to the other earbud making the dual connection earbud use more power regardless if you are using the mic or not. I really dont know if airpods use that same technology but I would assume that they do.

yes its normal, if you youtube any tws earbuds and see the battery tests, you will see that its always the right earbud the one that dies first and then the left one goes on for a while longer. Like I said, the right earbud draws more power because its the host earbud that is receiving bluetooth signal and sending signal to the left earbud. Its not like both earbuds are connected to your phone and working exactly the same. There is another wireless connection that works between both earbuds, thats what makes them true wireless. That extra sending signal to the left earbud is where that extra power is needed, unlike the left earbud that only receives signal.

Anyone know what this update does or fixes?

prior to the update. I noticed my AirPods case losing charge again. Held at around 100% for almost 4 days but then yesterday when I checked it said 95% and within an hour dropped to 89%.

I’ve now updated and reset again so hoping all good.

one thing I wondered, if checking the find my app on iPhone, would this cause battery drain on the case, as it’s checking the location of the devices?

May 4, 2023 2:40 AM in response to frustratedcstmr

No they are def inserted correctly. As I say, I hadn’t used them for a few days and case hadn’t moved. case was staying steady at 100% and didn’t lose any charge. Then all of a sudden yesterday, the case just lost charge quickly and drained 5% during day then another 6% between 5pm and 11pm so something started making them drain which is odd as have been fine.

as I say, I’ve now updated so hopefully was just a bug.

however, reason I asked about ‘find my’ is because I have the family settings set up and my partner said she checked find my a few times yesterday. Well, all devices in family show up so I wondered if when she checked find my, that it was actively checking my AirPods location and refreshing this causing battery to drain quicker. Is that possible?

Im sure "find my" does drain battery, but not to the point where its noticeably huge. I check find my constantly a few times a day to be able to see the battery percentage on the widgets as they go away when i walk away from the room the airpods are in, I have not noticed any huge drainage. Its weird you had that problem because i also had it in these past days, it happened once, but i dont know if it was on the past firmware or it had already update to this latest version. When I found out about the firmware update a day had gone by. It could of been something to do with the update, while trying to update or searching for the update? I havent had it happen again.

i am having the same issue. i bought my airpods in March. now is May. in the first months there is no issue at all. however, in the last week, i have the same issue. the airpods case battery drained out very fast. it was 94% at 8 o clock in the morning. at 5 pm, it become 42%. (i put my airpods once i have a lunch.) i have already remove the case. yet, it didn't solve the problem. pls fix this! thank you

Mine have been fine, what i have noticed is that sometimes one of the airpods dont set correctly in the case and it doesnt charge. It happens more than enough times. Its pretty annoying and that does keep the case draining faster. The way to find that out, is by pulling one airpod from the case and seeing the battery widget, it will then show you both airpods battery charge individually

Have you tried to use your airpods for 5h and see how much battery the case use to charge it? My case uses 10% of its charge to charge my airpods from 90 to 100% and the same 10% to charge from 50 to 100%. If I use the airpods for long periods of time, I can reach the 30h of use with the case. But if I use them for short periods of time, I can barely reach 12h total.

Hi everyone,

First time I got the 2nd generation, I leave home without them & get regular warning that I had “forgotten” them.

I disabled my home address in FindMy didn’t notice any specific issue.

Then I go on holiday & I leave the AirPods in the place I stayed, I get the warning & I didn’t want to disable my holiday address in case when I leave I really forget them.

This is when I started to experience super fast battery drain on the case.

I ended up disabling my holiday address & now it seems ok like max 5% loss per day when it was maybe 25% before !!!

I suppose when you “forget” them, they very often locate & message, which drains the battery.

So it might not be a bug & not using FindMy is probably too extreme.

Just be careful that places you leave your AirPods often & not necessarily forget them are disabled in FindMy.
