iPhone SE Battery Drain

Recently (6 weeks ago) I replaced an iPhone 7 with an SE and have noticed horrible battery drain compared to the 7. It can be 95% charged at 10:30pm and by 7:00am the next morning its at 10% with the battery usage graph showing a steady 45 degree with no activity.

Last night I turned the phone off with 80% battery life. This morning when I powered the phone up, battery life was at 35%. What could be causing this battery drain while the phone is off?

Well, after a couple IOS updates (currently at 16.2) the phone is performing much better; only losing about 2% overnight (in sleep mode). Power usage is much more in line with a new phone/battery. Apple must have fixed something with their ssoftware releases.

Also had a problem with I think IOS 16.1.2 where the phone suddenly went in to a deep sleep (was using it with 39% battery and suddenly went dark) and had to hold the side button for about a minute before I got the apple logo. After that I had to re-install several apps. Apple store gurus mentioned quite few people having this exact same problem.

Don't have all the answers, but best practice to preserve the life of the battery is to plug the phone into the power adapter and let it charge overnight, every night.

A bonus to this is that you won't be using the battery to run things in the background and you will start the day with the battery at 100%

Might be a good idea to check on the health of the battery as well.....just in case.

Tap Settings

Scroll down and tap on Battery

Tap Battery Health & Charging

Maximum Capacity should be at 98-99%

Make sure that Optimized Battery Charging is set to On

Hi Weissmjn,

A good place to start with battery life is going to Batteries - Maximizing Performance - Apple and making sure you have the settings in place to help preserve the battery.

Next, take a look at what's using the battery overnight. Go to About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support and it will show you how to view the battery usage. Scroll down to see a display of the apps and how much of the battery percentage they are using.

Make sure your apps are updated. Outdated apps have been known to cause similar issues. How to manually update apps on your Apple device - Apple Support
