I cannot see video files on conected camera only photos

On my Camera I have both photos and video's on the SD card, when I try to access them through what ever method I only see the photos to import.

They are definitely on the SD card as I can see them on the camera, only when the sd card is in it. I have tried to use the cable link to the camera and that gets the photos, but videos are not there. Have also tried inserting the sd card directly into an attached card reader. Even tried on my old MacBook pro which has a built in card reader - in both cases finder shows photos but not the video's.

I am wondering if it might be to do with the Norton AV I have recently installed.

Would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks both for the replies.

Yes that was correct, can see the card and jpg's in finder, not the video clips. It turned out to be a format thing. Somehow my camera had got set to save in avchd format, which is a format suited to hd tv's. The video's were saved in a separate private folder on the sd card as a single file. I am pretty sure that when I first looked in the private folder it appeared empty, so I think something I did on camera or mac made the single avchd file visible. Clicking on this file results in showing thumbnails of the individual video clips and then clicking on one clip opens it in iMovie from were it can be saved in iMovie format. Not ideal, but at least I have access.

I have now set the camera to save in mpeg format (which it always used to do) and new video's saved in this format appear alongside the photo's in the normal DCIM folder on the sd card.

So problem solved and I have learned a little about formats along the way, thanks for your help.

So, to get this straight, you can see the SD card with the Finder; you can see the photo files in a folder in the SD card in a Finder window; but you see no videos in the SD card's folders? Is that right? In Finder?


What format are the pictures? jpg, Raw? What format are the videos? Videos come in many crazy formats, and these may not be compatible with the mac. (Though usually they show up and just can't be played.)


And to ghr165's point, you've checked all the folders on the SD card?
