How to remove the black notch that just appeared after upgrading to Ventura 13.1? 16" MacBook Pro

I've got a MacBook Pro 16" 2021 with the Apple M1 Pro chip. I just upgraded the OS to Ventura 13.1 and now there is this large black notch at the top of the screen that obscures the middle of the menu bar. It seems to do absolutely nothing but get in the way and trigger my OCD. How do I remove it?

Weird. I swear it wasn't there yesterday morning before I clicked the 'Upgrade Now' button to install Ventura 13.1. And it makes no sense since the physical camera is exactly the same as it was before and when I shine a flashlight on it, I can see how little the actual camera pushes out beyond the original bezel. Seems completely unnecessary and in the words of a furniture design instructor I once had "It looks like a flaw that stands out like a speck of fly ****".
Anyway, thanks for the link to possible options to hide it. I'll give that a shot.

In many full screen applications, you can check a box so that the whole application stays below the notch area - but that just leaves a full black stripe across the whole display.

As already noted, it is not as if the notch is impending on the content; the reverse is true: the screen area is extended up around the notch, leaving an otherwise tiny border around the screen.

Another possible alternative is to choose a desktop background that does not contrast so much with the blackness of the notch - perhaps even a black image?

“The Notch” has always been there on that Mac, same as on any notched or Dynamic Island (bubbled) iPhone.

It’s where the camera resides. (Also how you get a little more screen space, rather than a bigger “forehead”.)

The choice of menu bar coloration and the use of full screen apps can make it less apparent.

Ventura has changed some parts of the user interface, here likely including the menu bar coloration.
