Big Sur 11.7.3 Safari favourites web page “icons” got grey out.

Why don't you install Big Sur 11.7.4 (build 20G1120) and Safari 16.3.1 (build 16614.4.6.11.7)?

This is newer than version 16.3 build 16614.4.6.11.6

Also Safari Version 16.3.1 build 16614.4.6.11.7 says "fixes an issue that may cause website icons to not load."

Upgrading to the latest Big Sur Update 11.7.4 combined with Safari update 16.3.1 fixed this problem for good.

Thank you ALL who posted in this thread despite Apple never publicly acknowledged the bug.

I am glad that I posted this thread on Twitter and Apple Support played dumbed as if everything was normal but I guess they cannot stand the public shaming and fixed the problem.

Just finished installing todays Big Sur update 11.7.4 and all icons came back, yay! ✌️

Praise the Lord God Almighty... Apple got mine fixed with the 11.7.4 Update and the Safari Update. All my colors for my icons are back. Thank You Apple Team.

Big Sur Update 11.7.4 combined with Safari update 16.3.1 fixed this problem for good.

Read through previous posts to see how this solved the problem.

Apparently you have to install Big Sur 11.7.4 before you can get Safari 16.3.1 (16614.4.6.11.7) but once you have that it should have fixed it.

If you "empty caches" under the developer menu, some of the icons (but not all) will be restored temporarily. This is only partially helpful. Apple should still fix this bug.

downgrading safari will not fix the issue guys, you need to downgrade your whole OS

essentially find the previous build of the OS (in my case 11.7.2) on the internet & make a bootable USB install & downgrade from there...

when you think about it, this by design apple purposely slows down older machines & phase out features eventually releasing buggy software all to frustrate everyone & their responses to all support queries is: "we no longer support legacy systems"

all to push everyone into buying new hardware..

well APPLE not all of us have $$$ to do so, some of us are lucky to even own a Mac even if its 2nd hand.

& in this changing economy with inflation on the rise more & more people are getting poorer by the day..

I wonder what the next update will include which part of the system they will break next..

You really think they are gonna fix that? macOS ventura still has WiFi bug and second display connecting problem even after 6 months. i just downloaded orion browser based on webkit and it looks same as safari and imported all of my bookmarks, password to it. That's it.

actually, I think I can export my bookmark from safari and save in on my computer and then launch chrome and import those. I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Thanks, an update for all you dears: having time today I made a full re-install from the recovery boot tool, wiping the disk. Same problem, so here we have a code bug that persist even in a fresh install!

Where is the emoticon palm face when I need? ;-)

p.s. I'm the only one with also the pointer arrow that disappear at Safari window edges (when it should allows resizing)?

Just got off the phone with tech support, no joy. A couple of the app icons went back to normal, and some got color as the background but that's it. The guy I talked to had not heard of the issue but had me try the same things done here......and yes the results were the same. Until Apple gets the engineers to fix this it might be as suggested----their way for us to get new computers. I hope not, so for now I'll just live with the greyed out.

Just downloaded today's Safari software update. That did not solve the issue of greyed out icons. Actually made mine worse. Some used to load, now every icon is greyed out. Running Big Sur 11.7.3 on a late 2014 iMac 27". Apple said it's now a legacy model and can no longer be updated to the newest OS Ventura.
