Big Sur 11.7.3 Safari favourites web page “icons” got grey out.

An Apple update this afternoon (15 Feb. 2023) restored almost all my favorites icons in Safari 16.3. My version is now: 16.3 (16614.4.6.11.6, 16614). I'm still using a 27" 5k iMac from late 2014. I don't know how many of us are left but I am grateful to have had 9 years of that gorgeous display.

Off-topic, But I am amused to see Mac users switching to Chrome because Safari seems slow. Perhaps that's the price for Apple's web security. Both browsers have the same Web-kit kernel, but the Chrome app file size is much larger than Safari's. That is, of course, because it takes a lot of code to track and catalog a user's every web experience.

There are several threads reporting this problem:

1. After safari update, home screen bookmark icons turned grey or empty
2. website icons in safari 16.3
3. Favicons gone in Safari

Very annoying, does reinstalling Big Sur fix it? Perhaps the brute force solution, but if Apple ignores the problem I see no other options, we have to work with these computers...

I wish I saw this thread before doing it, but no. I reinstalled Big Sur from scratch, and with 11.7.3 the issue persists. The favourites and the reading list are all missing icons.

Clearing cache will temporarily bring some back and the next time you reboot they disappear. Clearing cache means re-entering passwords for everything.

Just dumped slowfari as well, bookmarks and passwords transferred easily to chrome, thanks for the tip.

Hi, i encountering the same issue since 11.7.3 update with safari favourites icons and also my pointer disappear when i try to resize windows, including system's windows. Does your pointer disappear too ?

Same problem here I clear the cache and everything from the browser and the problem still persists.

Safari looks so ugly and this has been happening since the upgrade to macOS Big Sur 11.7.3.

As a fellow sufferer of the 'favicon gray-out', I wonder if my problem has anything to do with my intel-based iMac? Big Sur is the last operating system my machine will run; it's already more than 8 years old. If the bug is restricted to folks like me, are there enough of us who need the bug-fix to make it worth Apple's while? Also, is the bug in the system or in Safari? I updated both at the same time, so I don't know.

I don't think it has to do with your iMac. I use a MacBook Air 2020 that came pre-loaded with Big Sur. I also remember the update was included with a Safari update, so hard to tell. Guessing it's Big Sur.

Different subject, but worth the ask: Does anyone know why my storage usage has 116 GB listed as "other"? What is the "other"? Running out of storage already after two years. Hence my hesitation to install any newer version.

Yes... I have the same issue of loosing my icons in Big Sur Safari after updating to 11.7.3! I've tried everything I know to get them back too, but nothing seems to work. This is very disturbing because I have bunches of icons grouped together and now I cant find what I'm looking for without opening every group to see if its there or in the next group.

You got that right.....I refuse to upgrade to Ventura from Big Sur, storage and memory issues. I always hesitated downloading security updates, now I know why. Apple will screw with you until they force you to spend big bucks on new.

I will be using Chrome from now on. I am just logging into all my frequently used sites and bookmarking them in Chrome and I'll be good to go. ** bye, Safari.

I am so done with Apple's increasing unreliability. Last year I updated my old MacBook Pro to Monterey and it bricked it; what a nightmare that was.
