Mac Mini M2 wifi issues

New Mac Mini M2 has constant issues with wifi. Its unusable. Ethernet works perfectly, but when using wifi the connection will consistently drop packets. Wifi works perfectly with older Mac mini M1, MacBook Pro, Intel Mac in the same small office. I have turned off all other devices and still have same issue. Did a factory reset and same issues.

Chiming in to say I'm still having the same issues. Thankfully I have access to ethernet in my spot in my home office, which is the ultimate band-aid fix. If I didn't, my computer would be unusable. Sadly, I've found it more convenient to just plug it in and let it ride with poor wifi but a strong hardwire connection.

Some other bandaid fixes that have worked for me:

  • Turning the Mac Mini on its left side (with the front facing power light toward the top increases the signal strength. The wifi antennas must be on the right side of the device. I also bought a plastic Mac Mini stand to keep it propped up well.
  • Minimizing the use of the thunderbolt ports in the Mac Mini. When I'm using 2 or fewer of the 4 thunderbolt ports in the back of the computer, my Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) is in the high 30s, with about 30% signal noise. As soon as I plug in a 3rd (and 4th) device to those thunderbolt ports, the noise goes up into the mid 50s and the SNR drops to the low 20s. So if you're able to, try not plugging too many things in to the back of the computer. (Hilariously depressing that a solution to this problem is to not utilize your $2500 computer to its full potential.)
  • Again, this computer would be UNUSABLE if I did not have access to ethernet. The Wifi is awful, while every other device on my gigabit network thrives wirelessly.

I've also had some issues with my OWC Thunderbolt 4 Dock with transferring data from one drive to another (both being plugged into the dock). Not sure if this is an issue with the Power Delivery of the dock or its relationship to the computer, or something with Ventura or Silicon. All of these things feel like a symptom of the same issue, but I can't be sure.

Truly depressing that Apple has put out a product that is borderline unusable unless the consumer uses a specific setup. I can't believe this thread with almost 300 replies and tens of thousands of views has still been ignored by Apple. A huge betrayal of the company's power users. Shame on them.

For me only disabling AWDL works.  "sudo ifconfig awdl0 down"

This is definitely not Router related. I have tried several routers and even one of them on all bands - 2.4, 5 and 6Ghz and its the same. It does not happen under Bootcamp (Windows), so that rules out hardware fault. It affects my 2017 MacBook Pro, M1 Air and M2 Max.

Some information around the web:

https://github.com/jamestut/awdlkiller

https://www.meter.com/mac-osx-awdl-psa

(definitely not fixed on 13.2.1 contrary to what they state here)

I have had my Mac mini M2 a month....I am using it now to write this and I have been trying for the past hour to get to connect stable enough to do it.

It works wonders in a local non-connected environment but that defeats the purpose of having it. I need to connect. Whether it be wifi or ethernet, it needs to connect. None of us in this forum should be "tweaking" the settings, going into console mode for something that should be organic to hardware and software...those days are in the past.

I am boxing my mini up. Im going to Apple tomorrow to return it. It is sad that Apple is confounded and has not seen this as a monumental issue. The release of the new mini was a big deal to their base and public writ large...this inability to accept there is a problem, diagnose and push a fix is not good

Maybe a nice Class Action would push things along

Going to: General - AirDrop & Handoff

Disable:

Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices

Disable:

Airplay Receiver

Also:

Allow AirPlay for - Current User

Does not seem to entirely fix it but improved my calls and streaming. At least the Wifi seems to recover, whilst before it would stay broken for some time.

Otherwise... as mentioned many times before, go to Terminal and type:  sudo ifconfig awdl0 down - add your password, hit enter. When your wifi gets weird and it recovers it.

Super horrible to loose features that are actually pretty nice in order to have regular wifi. But hey... just trying to help.

Add me to the ever increasing list of people experiencing the same issue.

On the day I received my Mac mini M2 I started to go through the setup process and immediately noticed that it wouldn't connect to my WiFi 6 router's 5Ghz network. My old 2012 Mac mini sat next to it on the same desk works perfectly. I eventually discovered that it would work on the 2.4Ghz network but at seriously slower speeds (50% or so). Not having had a WiFi-6 enabled device before I assumed it was something I hadn't configured correctly.

However, after trying everything I can think of, including updating to Ventura 13.2.1 it's made no difference at all. I have no ethernet connection to use instead so I'm having to live with slow Wi-Fi.

Occasionally it will connect to the 5Ghz network but soon disconnects, so I revert back to 2.4Ghz - at least that allows me to use the computer albeit with much slower Wi-Fi than I should have. Even my iPhone 12 on the same desk can get the full Wi-Fi speed of my fibre internet connection.

Very frustrating for a £1000+ computer especially as my 10-year old Mac mini works better in this regard!

Returned my Mac mini because of this issue. Waited a week or two and ordered another one once it sounded like some people were having luck with 13.2.1. Had the same issue with the new one BEFORE I updated to 13.2.1. (massive packet loss, 90% reduced download and upload speeds) Updated last night and so far the issue is resolved. But I am not convinced the fix will stick. Connected to Eero home network with 5ghz and 2.4 on one ssid.

I had a M2 Pro Mac mini delivered earlier this week. Updated and set up as a new Mac. After 3 days of poor, unreliable WiFi (packet loss) causing noticeable problems when streaming video and downloading/transferring files I returned it to Apple today.

I have Deco mesh WiFi at home and my network needs to support devices at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. With no option to split to separate SSID’s, no connection issues on any other device and not wanting to run an ethernet cable or lose functionality by disabling awdl then right now, out of the box, this product is not for me.

I’ll continue to monitor this thread. Hopefully a fix will come soon and I’d be happy to buy again if/when confirmed as resolved.

I think I found the reason for my m2 mac mini, but still don't know why this can cause the wifi disconnecting issue. I kept an external ssd drive enclosure plugged in the rightmost type c in the past few days, today I would like to return this mac mini and I unplugged the external drive, then I noticed that the wifi became available immediately. I plugged it again and made my mini sleep for 10 minutes, then I wake the mini up, the wifi is still unavailable. After I unplugged the external drive and repeated the process for several times, I don't see the issue anymore. I have no idea if this issue is caused by my external ssd drive or the mac mini itself, but I decide to keep this mac mini at this moment.

I picked up a Mac mini M2 Pro yesterday, not being aware of these issues. I'm at 13.2.1, and experience the same issues noted here. Wifi performance is acceptable for a short period of time, then I experience high latency and significant packet loss (continual ping to my router). No other device has these issues, and all get a solid 600Mbps AX 5Ghz transfer speed no problem. My access points are only configured for 5Ghz.

I just ran a CAT 6 cable across the floor to see if it's any better on a wire.

For me - my Wifi performance issue has been resolved with the update 2+ weeks ago.

All - Let me share my experience.

I have many iOS and OSX devices on my Eero pro 6 MESH network - have 1GB DL and50MB upload.

On Wifi this Mac Mini Pro had terrible performance, high latency, speed tests would not complete.

When connected to ethernet - performance was fine.

I had escalations with Apple and they suggested 13.2.1

Once I applied that patch/update my performance has been rock solid

If anyone is having issues I would strongly recommended applying that update

So, this is a real issue with Apple. I am on my second unit and today I have just started experiencing the same issues as I was with my original unit (packet loss, internet connectivity dropping, applications glitching/stopping).

This time around I did not upgrade to 13.2.1 and I'm still seeing this issue.

Something is going on here that really needs to be addressed by Apple. How many replacement units will it take?

I got my Mac Mini M2 a few days ago. I was on 13.0. at first. Everything seemed to work fine for some days (using 2.4ghz wifi).

Strangely, in my experience, the problems began shortly after i connected a new Magic Trackpad.

I then activated a separated 5ghz wifi and connected to that, which seems to have helped. Then I updated to 13.2.1. and it is still working. Although. 2.4 ghz seems to be way too slow. I have to run some more tests because i won't be happy until i can use both 2.4ghz and 5ghz and Airdrop etc.

For me, as for many others, the main question is wether it is a hardware/design issue and i should return the mini or wether it is a software problem and will be fully fixed in the future...
