Mac Mini M2 wifi issues

New Mac Mini M2 has constant issues with wifi. Its unusable. Ethernet works perfectly, but when using wifi the connection will consistently drop packets. Wifi works perfectly with older Mac mini M1, MacBook Pro, Intel Mac in the same small office. I have turned off all other devices and still have same issue. Did a factory reset and same issues.

Chiming in to say I'm still having the same issues. Thankfully I have access to ethernet in my spot in my home office, which is the ultimate band-aid fix. If I didn't, my computer would be unusable. Sadly, I've found it more convenient to just plug it in and let it ride with poor wifi but a strong hardwire connection.

Some other bandaid fixes that have worked for me:

  • Turning the Mac Mini on its left side (with the front facing power light toward the top increases the signal strength. The wifi antennas must be on the right side of the device. I also bought a plastic Mac Mini stand to keep it propped up well.
  • Minimizing the use of the thunderbolt ports in the Mac Mini. When I'm using 2 or fewer of the 4 thunderbolt ports in the back of the computer, my Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) is in the high 30s, with about 30% signal noise. As soon as I plug in a 3rd (and 4th) device to those thunderbolt ports, the noise goes up into the mid 50s and the SNR drops to the low 20s. So if you're able to, try not plugging too many things in to the back of the computer. (Hilariously depressing that a solution to this problem is to not utilize your $2500 computer to its full potential.)
  • Again, this computer would be UNUSABLE if I did not have access to ethernet. The Wifi is awful, while every other device on my gigabit network thrives wirelessly.

I've also had some issues with my OWC Thunderbolt 4 Dock with transferring data from one drive to another (both being plugged into the dock). Not sure if this is an issue with the Power Delivery of the dock or its relationship to the computer, or something with Ventura or Silicon. All of these things feel like a symptom of the same issue, but I can't be sure.

Truly depressing that Apple has put out a product that is borderline unusable unless the consumer uses a specific setup. I can't believe this thread with almost 300 replies and tens of thousands of views has still been ignored by Apple. A huge betrayal of the company's power users. Shame on them.

I got the Mac mini M2 Pro last month and it’s been solid on wifi until yesterday where, despite being connected to my wireless network, there’s no internet.

my personal hotspot works fine and haven’t tried a wired connection yet. This seems like a huge oversight on apple’s behalf after seeing how many people have posted about this in the last 4 months.

Yes Apple was no help. Firstly they ran a hardware diagnosis tool - said everything was working fine. They then wiped the M2 Pro clean, just like a new one and said it was working fine.....Get home, wifi still having same issues. After weeks of frustration I sold the stupid thing and I have moved on. I have had a few apple computers before the M2 Pro (2 x laptops, 2 x iMac's and a mac mini) and I've got to say this has been the worst experience. I bought this M2 Pro for my wife and her current thoughts are that she will not use another apple computer again.

Apple has major Mac mini problem. Wifi doesn't work properly and they didn't admit it yet.

Here's my story:

After one month of using my Mac I gave it to polish apple support (iSpot). They found wifi problem and ordered mainboard from Apple. After one month of waiting (!) then changing support to smaller one (communication with ispot support was awful) they (the smaller polish support) finally changed my mainboard. In Macs mini case it's actually whole computer. And know here I am with my "fixed" mac still not working. Download speed drops on wifi from 750Mbs to 200Mbs or less depends on mood I guess. This is unacceptable. Now I have two options: 1. wait for Apple to admit and fix this issue or exchange/repair program 2. Try to get my money from shop where i bought this Mac and buy older version with m1 pro. Both options are frustrating and give me shivers. I am full of disappointment.

For a couple of days, my downloads were 0.1 Mbps. Every page took 10 to 20 seconds to load. I looked on a few forums and people wrote about a couple themes. One being the HDMI cord interference and AVB/EAV mode.

As soon as I did this and ran the same test the download speed jumped to 50.0 Mbps. Literally, I just messed around with the cable location and the wifi which had been incredibly slow for the last few days skyrocketed.

I had the same issue April 15th on Spectrum default WIFI AP again. None of the recommendations previously worked, including turning off AIRDROP and bluetooth. WIN10/11 worked, android worked, but not M1, M2 macs. I went out and bought cat5e and it worked again, SUPER DUPER FRUSTRATING. 8 HOURS OF TROUBLESHOOTING yielded nothing. It then worked again after 2 days. I know my WIFI RSSI was 60 and my noise was 60. I have NO IDEA what the problem is but when I got closer to my Spectrum Wifi6 AP it started to work again. After 2 days I can now use my mac 15 feet line of site to the spectrum AP. I dont know if its apples fault or spectrum, but it is insanley frustrating. Before the 15th both my mac mini m2 and my m1 mbp 2022 were working fine.

Ok, I received my new Mac Mini M2 Pro last Friday and spent the weekend backing up and transferring my data from my Mac Mini 2018. This is my work/office machine and is set up with dual screens, a back-up 1 TB SSD for work files and a back-up 8GB La Cie Porsche drive for personal files - music, photos, software, etc.

On Sunday night I "dropped" the M2 pro in in place of the 2018 machine and connected everything.

On Monday I lost a day of possible work trying to get a constant Internet access despite a strong wi-fi signal...

I spent the day rebooting the router, rebooting and replacing the extender receivers we have (my partner and I have offices on the top floor of the house so use extenders to boost the signal from the modem on the ground floor - she works on a Windows laptop in one room and spends a lot of time on Teams and had no problems with wi-fi or internet. I could never get a consistent internet connection for more than 5 minutes at a time despite a strong wi-fi signal in my office and as I work with Microsoft Office with OneDrive for my files (lots of scientifc papers and articles) that interfered with my work-flow.

Then I tried the unplugging and restarting of the Mac Mini and that solved the problem for 10 minutes, until it went to sleep... and woke with the same problem.

Now I knew it is not the wi-fi or internet connection as my M1 MacBook Pro, iPad Pro and iPhone had no problem getting full speed internet in exactly the same location. In fact I ended up using the MacBook for urgent work and e-mails, but it was not in my dual-screen set-up.

So finally, I relocated the extender in my room which fortunately has an ethernet socket, and placed it behind my desk and connected it with an ethernet cable to the Mac Mini, and voila, I have the high speed Internet connection I was used to.

So this tells me that the wi-fi set-up - card, software or firmware - in the Mac mini M2 Pro is screwed up, and as is obvious from all the comments here, it is a common and known problem - SO WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT APPLE?????

I do not want to return the machine - I bought it from an official Apple reseller in our village (in the Netherlands, near Amsterdam) as I prefer to support local businesses so they do not have a genius bar, and I am guessing the "genuises" in Amsterdam will not have an answer either. I just want a fix for this isse.

You’re wasting your time expecting a fix. What you did was one of the work-arounds for the root issue that affects all Apple devices, worldwide. Predominately on MacOS, as it’s more noticeable and tests can be ran.

Go back and read my replies regarding AWDL. They will tell you what’s happening, why, and how to test it.

If you’re still in your return window, run back and return it now like many have already. Some of us weren’t so lucky, and it was too late.

Moving around the cables. I have a dual monitor set up, it is set up through an adapter that plugs into the Thunderbolt. It was in a port right next to the HDMI hook-up for monitor 1. I moved it to the farthest port and let the adapter hang far away from the Mac ( before I didn't want it to hang so it sat on top of the mac mini). I have no idea why It worked but It definitely did. I would sit and wait for youtube to load for 2 plus minutes. For a couple of days, my google speed test said 0.1 Mbps and it's now consistently back up to 118 Mbps. I was pretty shocked at how instantly it happened. This has been my experience.

I bought a Mac mini M2 Pro to replaced my Mac mini M1 acted as a Time Machine and file server. I am so disappointed that the M2 Pro's WiFi slows down to non-existent every now and then, making it totally useless. My dad already got my Mac mini M1, and I cannot give the M2 Pro one to him in such state anyway. This thread has been going on for months now, wonder whether Apple is even aware of this issue!

Apr 23, 2023 1:18 PM in response to Macbrush

They definitely are aware, and working to fix it.

As a result of my posts in this thread I received an unexpected call from an AppleCare Support engineer in Austin, Texas on Friday (I'm in the UK). During 2 calls totalling almost an hour, I described the issues in some detail, he screen-shared my Mac, got me to demonstrate the issue and collected over 700mb worth of sysdiagnose and Wireless Diagnostic log files whilst doing so.

I would guess they're contacting other people too, so hopefully the data they collect will lead to a fix at some point.

Someone from the US tried to contact me at the weekend, but I was not at home, so ignored the international call (I am in the Netherlands) - and would not have been able to help out anyway. I solved teh wi-fi issue by linking by Ethernet to a wif-fi extender but hopefully, as you say, they are investigating the problem and will come up with a solution. Would be nice if they could solve the iissue of my external drives being (hard drives and SSD) being ejected every time the Mac Mini Pro goes to sleep.
