Mac Mini M2 wifi issues

New Mac Mini M2 has constant issues with wifi. Its unusable. Ethernet works perfectly, but when using wifi the connection will consistently drop packets. Wifi works perfectly with older Mac mini M1, MacBook Pro, Intel Mac in the same small office. I have turned off all other devices and still have same issue. Did a factory reset and same issues.

Chiming in to say I'm still having the same issues. Thankfully I have access to ethernet in my spot in my home office, which is the ultimate band-aid fix. If I didn't, my computer would be unusable. Sadly, I've found it more convenient to just plug it in and let it ride with poor wifi but a strong hardwire connection.

Some other bandaid fixes that have worked for me:

  • Turning the Mac Mini on its left side (with the front facing power light toward the top increases the signal strength. The wifi antennas must be on the right side of the device. I also bought a plastic Mac Mini stand to keep it propped up well.
  • Minimizing the use of the thunderbolt ports in the Mac Mini. When I'm using 2 or fewer of the 4 thunderbolt ports in the back of the computer, my Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) is in the high 30s, with about 30% signal noise. As soon as I plug in a 3rd (and 4th) device to those thunderbolt ports, the noise goes up into the mid 50s and the SNR drops to the low 20s. So if you're able to, try not plugging too many things in to the back of the computer. (Hilariously depressing that a solution to this problem is to not utilize your $2500 computer to its full potential.)
  • Again, this computer would be UNUSABLE if I did not have access to ethernet. The Wifi is awful, while every other device on my gigabit network thrives wirelessly.

I've also had some issues with my OWC Thunderbolt 4 Dock with transferring data from one drive to another (both being plugged into the dock). Not sure if this is an issue with the Power Delivery of the dock or its relationship to the computer, or something with Ventura or Silicon. All of these things feel like a symptom of the same issue, but I can't be sure.

Truly depressing that Apple has put out a product that is borderline unusable unless the consumer uses a specific setup. I can't believe this thread with almost 300 replies and tens of thousands of views has still been ignored by Apple. A huge betrayal of the company's power users. Shame on them.

Hi Ken. I touched the connector's metal with a (unprotected) paper clip and the transfer speed got bigger immediately. It remebered me of the old TV sets with a room antenna :).

Nevertheless, the speed was not at it's maximum and therefore I swiched my screen to USB-C cable instead of HDMI and problem solved (i unplugged the hdmi from the computer) - Now it works perfectly at max speed. I will keep you posted if the wifi problem comes back with USB C also.

Just to be clear, I would like to say that I had a Mac mini M1 two weeks ago on the same desk, with the same connectors that worked well. I have also changed the WIFI settings (separate 5G and 2,5G networks) to try to solve this issue but it didn't help.

I had the same suggestion as they couldn't get it to work in the Apple store. They ended up reinstalling OS, instead of replacing the logic board. I ended up using a new Cat 6 ethernet cable (wasn't game to use wifi again) direct to modem and haven't had a problem since, goes like a bullet. Not sure replacing the logic board will solve the issue unless the 6E chipset has changed. Hope it solves your problem, otherwise it might be a return for refund or using an ethernet cable if you can.

That's interesting. Most people have had HDMI port interference affecting their Wi-Fi issues. Just out of curiosity, could you perform an experiment? Could you ground the HDMI port of your Mac mini to see if that improves Wi-Fi signal strength? Some other people remarked that their Wi-Fi got better when grounding the HDMI port/cable. Maybe also ground the Thunderbolt port/cable and see if that changes anything?

There is no need to touch the metal part of the HDMI connector.

Just touch the plastic part of the connector, and the response time will become normal.

Once you stop touching it, the response time becomes slow and unstable.

This is a method I have tested, but I cannot provide a detailed explanation in the form of a video.

Perhaps others can provide more detailed testing and explanatory videos. If this issue has been encountered by many people, what can be done to get Apple's attention?

Here is the download link for the video I shared.

Yes, AbuYang, touching the plastic sheath of the HDMI connector is enough to eliminate most Wi-Fi interference. I was just wondering if interference would further decrease if the metal portion of the connector was grounded. Your video and other accounts of grounding the HDMI port suggests the HDMI port is emitting EMF interference and grounding the HDMI port eliminates a lot of the Electro Magnetic Field interference.
