Mac Mini M2 wifi issues

New Mac Mini M2 has constant issues with wifi. Its unusable. Ethernet works perfectly, but when using wifi the connection will consistently drop packets. Wifi works perfectly with older Mac mini M1, MacBook Pro, Intel Mac in the same small office. I have turned off all other devices and still have same issue. Did a factory reset and same issues.

Chiming in to say I'm still having the same issues. Thankfully I have access to ethernet in my spot in my home office, which is the ultimate band-aid fix. If I didn't, my computer would be unusable. Sadly, I've found it more convenient to just plug it in and let it ride with poor wifi but a strong hardwire connection.

Some other bandaid fixes that have worked for me:

  • Turning the Mac Mini on its left side (with the front facing power light toward the top increases the signal strength. The wifi antennas must be on the right side of the device. I also bought a plastic Mac Mini stand to keep it propped up well.
  • Minimizing the use of the thunderbolt ports in the Mac Mini. When I'm using 2 or fewer of the 4 thunderbolt ports in the back of the computer, my Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) is in the high 30s, with about 30% signal noise. As soon as I plug in a 3rd (and 4th) device to those thunderbolt ports, the noise goes up into the mid 50s and the SNR drops to the low 20s. So if you're able to, try not plugging too many things in to the back of the computer. (Hilariously depressing that a solution to this problem is to not utilize your $2500 computer to its full potential.)
  • Again, this computer would be UNUSABLE if I did not have access to ethernet. The Wifi is awful, while every other device on my gigabit network thrives wirelessly.

I've also had some issues with my OWC Thunderbolt 4 Dock with transferring data from one drive to another (both being plugged into the dock). Not sure if this is an issue with the Power Delivery of the dock or its relationship to the computer, or something with Ventura or Silicon. All of these things feel like a symptom of the same issue, but I can't be sure.

Truly depressing that Apple has put out a product that is borderline unusable unless the consumer uses a specific setup. I can't believe this thread with almost 300 replies and tens of thousands of views has still been ignored by Apple. A huge betrayal of the company's power users. Shame on them.

I think the main issue is that the HDMI cable, it any cable going into the Mac Mini M2 (or PRO) is too close to the radio receiver.

I use two screens. One is connected with HDMI, and the other with an HDMI to USBC cable. So far, going on for 2 hours, I have seen no drop immediately. I will revisit this reply in the next few days to update if there has been any change

Hi HaffiOConnor

You're right, its not the HDMI cable that is the culprit here. But for me, and my personal MMM2, so far switching the display cable from one place to another has helped. I use fast.com for my testing as it is morte stable and less adds than Ookla's test.

This may not be a wow speed for most of you, but considering it's stable at this speed over WiFi is a godsend for me and my work. (If the screenshot doesn't appear, its 240 Mbps)

Although I'm sure poorly shielded video cables (of any type, not just HDMI) can cause Wi-Fi interference issues, this doesn't seem to be the only cause for everyone. I tried all combinations of cables and ports, including using none at all, during my troubleshooting, and it made no difference to my Wi-Fi issues.

MacOS 13.4 fixed the issues for me the instant I installed it, but oddly, in the last two days, some of my issues have started re-appearing, even though nothing has changed. I'm starting to get frequent ping spikes again - although not exactly the same as before.

I am a network specialist(CCIE) plus and Apple support specialist and also work with wifi over 20 years, there is something going on with this chipset/drivers on wifi6E , I work as a cisco partner helping lots of customers and have now spent hours and hours on troubleshooting.

Result is

Problem is mostly on 5ghz, on 2,4 band its does not seam to bother normal users.

auth for 802.1x is worst, psk is beter.

We have tested many other mac with non wifi6e chipset including m1pro, problem is not there , so this is the wifi6e, 100% , I have not contacted apple since I am in Iceland and covarge there is hard to get. I have opened cases with cisco wich all point towards client. Hoping Apple will get their act togather ans fix or replace these.

I have the same issue! I thought I fixed it but it happens everyday. It connects then shortly later it will disconnect itself and reconnect back again. Or it will say it is connected but unable to reach the internet and it so annoying to repeat the same thing resetting the router everytime this happens just to get connected. My phone and other devices works so fine except for mac mini 2. I just bought this mac mini April 28th and right now I’m thinking of returning it…

I have also experienced the same issue, and even after upgrading to the latest version, it still occurs after a while. I suspect it's a problem with the HDMI connector because when I touch the HDMI connector, the signal improves, but the problem occurs again when I let go.

So, I switched to using a TypeC to HDMI cable to avoid using the HDMI interface.

It has been more than two days since the switch, and the problem no longer occurs. Moreover, I have tested the ping response speed, and it has become faster and more stable, without any sudden spikes in response time.

The above approach is provided for reference.

I bought an M2 Pro in March and experienced the same wifi and bluetooth issues discussed here. I exchanged it for a different one and while the problems persisted, it wasn't as bad as the first Mac mini. Using two Samsung 4k monitors with Spectrum 500mbps wifi, I was getting between 15-125mbps. My old MacBook Pro on the same desk would get upwards of 450mbps. After reading that some had success with swapping out the HDMI cables to new ones, I went to Amazon and purchased one 8k HDMI cable (into an 8k HDMI port) to see if that made a difference. Lo and behold, swapping one of the HDMIs upped my wifi speed to 250mbps. Seeing that that improved speed, I purchased one more matching 8k HDMI and now get consistent 450mbps wifi. I have not done a packet loss test or anything as it seems to have fixed the problem. I would highly recommend everyone experiencing problems upgrade their HDMI cables.

I have the exact same problem on 2023 MacBook Pro 14. I got a replacement from the Apple Store and I still have the same issue with the replacement as well. I have a M2 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro 13 and never had this issue. The M2 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro 13 also uses Wifi 6(802.11ax) so I don't think that's the problem.

@dennis_hackethal were you able to find any solution?

Hi, I've been using the same TypeC to HDMi connection since I had my machine. The issue will occur, maybe not as often as HDMI to HDMI (I haven't tried), but it will disconnect on average every four days.

Deco M9 Plus, 2.4ghz and 5ghz (printer only supports 2.4ghz). I tried 5ghz only, but the same issue occurred.

After calling Apple's support, I'd linked them this thread, still no acknowledgement of the issue on their part.

Have provided them with the wifi diagnostics.

Taking the macmini into the applestore tomorrow.

Will see how it goes
