Mac Mini M2 wifi issues

New Mac Mini M2 has constant issues with wifi. Its unusable. Ethernet works perfectly, but when using wifi the connection will consistently drop packets. Wifi works perfectly with older Mac mini M1, MacBook Pro, Intel Mac in the same small office. I have turned off all other devices and still have same issue. Did a factory reset and same issues.

Chiming in to say I'm still having the same issues. Thankfully I have access to ethernet in my spot in my home office, which is the ultimate band-aid fix. If I didn't, my computer would be unusable. Sadly, I've found it more convenient to just plug it in and let it ride with poor wifi but a strong hardwire connection.

Some other bandaid fixes that have worked for me:

  • Turning the Mac Mini on its left side (with the front facing power light toward the top increases the signal strength. The wifi antennas must be on the right side of the device. I also bought a plastic Mac Mini stand to keep it propped up well.
  • Minimizing the use of the thunderbolt ports in the Mac Mini. When I'm using 2 or fewer of the 4 thunderbolt ports in the back of the computer, my Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) is in the high 30s, with about 30% signal noise. As soon as I plug in a 3rd (and 4th) device to those thunderbolt ports, the noise goes up into the mid 50s and the SNR drops to the low 20s. So if you're able to, try not plugging too many things in to the back of the computer. (Hilariously depressing that a solution to this problem is to not utilize your $2500 computer to its full potential.)
  • Again, this computer would be UNUSABLE if I did not have access to ethernet. The Wifi is awful, while every other device on my gigabit network thrives wirelessly.

I've also had some issues with my OWC Thunderbolt 4 Dock with transferring data from one drive to another (both being plugged into the dock). Not sure if this is an issue with the Power Delivery of the dock or its relationship to the computer, or something with Ventura or Silicon. All of these things feel like a symptom of the same issue, but I can't be sure.

Truly depressing that Apple has put out a product that is borderline unusable unless the consumer uses a specific setup. I can't believe this thread with almost 300 replies and tens of thousands of views has still been ignored by Apple. A huge betrayal of the company's power users. Shame on them.

I’ve had my Mac Mini M2 256/16Gb 4 weeks and it was having wifi issues like everyone else from day one, not connecting to sites, stopping without warning. I even plugged it into the router today and it worked for about an hour. I think I did everything that everyone has spoken about. Took it to the Apple Store today, no wifi, total failure. The store contacted me 4 hrs later, logic board needs replacing, 7 day wait. Hopefully that will resolve the issues. Will wait and see. Not good.

there is something wrong with the power distribution to components.

Besides WiFI issue, I had USB-C connected devices turning off and on and HDMI connected monitor no displaying properly.

just shut off the Mac Mini, unplugged the power and hold down the power button for 15 seconds. Just like the old days. Everything is back to normal. Had the Mac Mini M2 for 2 months and did this procedure 3 times. Normal after updating. Including brand new out of the box.

Hey guys i have completely given up, do you guys know the best way to sell a mini? i feel after a trip to the apple store and multiple service calls i just want to be done with this machine, its an insult to my patronage of apple... cannot even watch 4k video on this machine, it wont do anything. Even airdrop a small file is unusable... i hate for even trying this long, its days of productivity wasted. All six of my other apple devices at the same location in my house all transmit FAST and super airdrop speed. Its not my router or anything i can fix, this is all on Apple.

No, "pro" is this case is just a marketing name for a higher specification CPU than the regular M2 - that's why you paid more - for a faster CPU. The rest of the computer is exactly same, including the Wi-Fi networking hardware. That's why this issue affects me with my regular M2 chip, and you with your M2 Pro. You didn't get a Mac mini built to a higher standard, or with higher quality parts, you just got a faster CPU/GPU.

Also, don't give up on it just yet - wait until the next Ventura release and see if that helps.

The “Pro” moniker debate is purely semantics, but it did make me think of something…

If I remember correctly, the internal design is slightly different in the Pro to make room for the 4 thunderbolt ports. I suspect the location placement of the airport card inside the machine is to blame for most of these issues, at least the ones I am having.

This is an Apple problem and we as owners should be taking them back to Apple. The product is less that 12 months old and is covered by their warranty and there are complaints all over the internet.

Apple needs to fix the problem and not rely on us as owners to sort out their problem.

If it can't be fixed, then we should get a refund, not wasting our time trying to come up with a solution, or passing it onto someone else.

There is consumer laws protecting the consumer regarding products that don't do as the manufacturer claims. If it can't be repaired or replaced with a working one and you are entitled to a full refund.

My MM M2 is in the Apple store as I write this on my 2014 MM, (which works and connects to the internet and doesn't fail or drop out). If the issue is not solved I'll be asking for a refund.

Murphy's Law!!!

I have previously extensively reported on how I had the same problem of lisign wi-fi, tempo solved by using an ethernet cable to a wi-fi extender.

Following a contact from a very charming Apple support person a dn gping through diagnostics with him, I unplugged the ethernet cable and everything was working fine - and high speed internet has been maintained for several days now.

So there are differences between when it was not working and now whne it is:

First, I have two identical HP27 monitors attached that were originally connected with 1) an HDMI-HDMI cable to the HDMI port, and the second with an HDMI cable plugged into a Thunderbolt port via an Apple USB-C dongle (the one that goes from Thunderbolt to HDMI, USB-2 and USB-C ports). I replaced both of these with new 1m Silkland USB C to HDMI 4k cables purchased from Amazon (described as [2021 Updated, Optimal Chip] USB C to HDMI Cable (Thunderbolt 3 compatible) for MacBook Pro/Air), both now plugged into Thuderbolt ports.

Second, I did the Apple Security update so I am running Venture 13.3.1 (a)

Now I do not know which, if either, of these changes has made the difference, but I am not suffering from the wi-fi drop-outs any more.

macOS 13.4 released today (18th May 2023) has resolved all of the Wi-Fi issues I had been having. For the first time since getting my Mac mini M2 three months ago, my Wi-Fi is full-speed, stable and not exhibiting the internet drop-outs due to AirDrop and the Displays settings. I get occasional ping spikes, particularly after waking up the computer, but probably wouldn't notice those if I wasn't specifically looking.

This does not help at all, this is a problem with Kext/driver for this chipset or something relative, its all over, we have networks that work just fine with M1 machines, both pro and air. When m2Pro with Wifi6e chipset came and these machines are not all over companys we have wifi tickets all over, they dropping, bad connection and such.

No other machines have these troubles.
