How to turn off read receipts for all contacts

This does not work, at least for me. It says it’s off but then still shows up as read.

I called and talked to multiple people and they had me trouble shoot a lot but they weren’t able to fix the issue.

So we have to go through every contact in order to disable it? I really wish you guys would just disable it altogether because at this point, it’s not a feature — it’s just a bug.

Not everybody needs to know that they’re messages have been read. It’s infuriating.

I am having the same problem. It is irritating me. I have confidence when having that feature turned off. To have anyone. Otifed that I have read their text or haven’t is. It ok with me. I have had this turned off from the word go, still my girlfriend watches the receipt and I can’t take it. I want answers.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE VIOLATION OF PRIVACY !!! I’ve had this bug for maybe 2 + years. This is a BASIC, settings control. THIS NEEDS TO BE A TOP PRIORITY FOR APPLE. TOP TOP TOP, nothing more important. I’ve changed the settings, rebooted…. FIX this issue APPLE with the next release !!!!!!

It's 10th April 2024 - does anyone know if apple has indeed sort out this issue? I have the Read feature off at the Settings level for Messages and for each individual and STILL, it randomly has some messages with read on.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

My read receipts are turned off in settings and for all individual contacts but still showing read receipts for certain contacts.

I’m having this same issue and it’s with a person I use to date so I don’t want my read receipts sent. However, not sure if he is getting my read receipts which I’m assuming because I can see his. I went to his contact information and turned it off but he’s the only one in my contacts that remains. This is so odd and unfortunate.

It’s June 2024 and a few of my contacts still receive read receipts from me even though I turned it off. Apple fix this soon thanks. Kinda makes me nervous to think about all the other features that I assume are switched off.

This is happening to me as well where read receipts are off but some contacts see them and some don’t. When I go into the text chain and into settings, my iPhone does not show any option to turn read receipts on or off individually. I have an XR, currently iOS 17.5.1. If this isn’t resolved I will also not be upgrading to another iPhone when I purchase a new phone this year.

ios 17.5.1. More than a year after this thread started, same basic problem as everyone else. My phone sends read receipts even when toggled off for individual users. Apple's recommended fixes don't work. Hard to believe that Apple has fallen so far behind other tech companies. This phone is new otherwise I'd switch to Android.

Same thing happened here. Would never in a million years turn on this feature, but it was randomly activated for one of my contacts.
