iPhone Hotspot keeps disconnecting

iPhone's made hotspot only works steady with Apple computer. As soon as you use it with any other computer, it keeps randomly disconnecting over and over again. No matter if you keep your screen on or off, phone is in low power mode or not, if you have the latest iPhone or not, etc. It is impossible to do any quality work on your laptop using iPhone's hotspot. It has nothing to do with software updates or anything like that as I am always running the latest version of iOS. I have read on the internet so many threads about this. It is something that Apple just refuses to fix for years. Or does that on purpose.. Whatever the case is - it is absolutely not nice, as it resembles the quality of Apple's products and service. So frustrated and disappointed.....

Hello, I'm sorry for my bad english, I'm from spain.

To keep on hotspot while you are working with your computer Windows or Linux do this:

Open a cmd (windows) or terminal (Linux)

Make a ipconfig command to know the gateway of your iphone (Puerta de enlace, in spanish). That's the local ip of your iphone.

in my computer it is like this:

c:\users|tirso\ipconfig

Adaptador de LAN inalámbrica Wi-Fi:

Sufijo DNS específico para la conexión. . :

Dirección IPv4. . . . . . . . . . . . . . : x.x.x.x ->not this

Máscara de subred . . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.240

Puerta de enlace predeterminada . . . . . : xxx.xx.xx.xx -> THIS IS THE IP that you need (gateway)

In windows write ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xx -t

In linux just ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xx

minimize the cmd or terminal.

This will maintain constant communication with your iPhone and prevent it from disconnecting.

As it is a local communication (between iPhone and computer), it does not use megabytes of internet.

It works perfect for me.

Your welcome.

I have had this problem in the past. This has 100% completely fixed the problem for me. If it doesn't work for you - there is no way I can imagine why. I live in the boonies - way in the boonies - WAY WAY out there. No other internet is an option. Since having an iPhone with a hotspot, I have always had issues maintaining a CONSTANT wifi connection to my Lenovo Laptop running on Windows 10. I tried to toggle switches, reset networks, yada yada. I even tried to tether my phone to my PC with the cord thinking that would help... So, fast forward to my getting a brand new phone when the iPhone 12's hit the scene.

So, anway... here ya go --

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I am still using the iP12PM, every day, and I use the hotspot as my only internet source.

It does not disconnect until I manually do it from my PC's wifi switch, OR from the toggle switch in the phones 'Personal Hotspot' settings folder, OR the shortcut menu's green command button.

I added my phone to my computer as a WIRELESS NETWORK DEVICE! :

---Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers

---"Add a Device" (top left, directly below the toolbar)

---Bluetooth - ON - for iPhone

---Follow prompt wizard, this will setup your iPhone as a "Bluetooth Access Point".

---Save a shortcut of the 'iPhone' that is now visible in the device list to your desktop for easier access.

When you're ready to use the hotspot, make sure you have the Personal Hotspot toggle ON from the settings menu and your iPhone's bluetooth on.

(You only have to do this the one time if you leave it on all the time, you won't need to even mess with your phone - like as long as it's within bluetooth connection rage, you'll connect every time)

When you want to connect to your hotspot:

---Right click on the device on your desktop, like right click on "so-and-so's iPhone" and the second option should read "Connect Using... >"

Hover this option, and choose "Access Point"

Bam. Now your network connection icon will look like the icon when connected to the internet via an Ethernet connection.

When you right click on the icon and "Open Network & Internet Settings" the network page will show the connection diagram

Your Computer Icon -- BT Connection via Private Network -- Internet Ball.

This will fix the problem. The only other issue that could occur is if maybe you chose the wrong kind of network adapter option when setting up the Access Point via the setup wizard. You can change it to bluetooth access on this same page in settings, by "change adapter options".

Like I've already stated, I got this iPhone 12 Pro Max in the late fall of the year it came out, I set it up to use on my Lenovo Laptop with this method THE SAME DAY I got it and I have never ONCE had the problem of the internet auto-disconnecting since doing so.

If I turn on the hotspot and connect wirelessly instead, I will 100% get booted off over and over.

It does not happen when you do it as an Access Point via Bluetooth. :D

So...

Anyway, happy internet browsing!

Hi guys .. your pain is mine too . After wasting many hours of testing.. Apple suc ks .. try this

Settings - Personal Hotspot - Maximise Compatibility.

and in your wireless adapter on your computer. Go to properties- configuration- advanced- wireless mode and select IEEE 802.11b/g/n

much more stable and connected faster, albeit at not the fastest wifi speeds… Apple perhaps has perpetually tweak in the future to wireless version 5 or 6 standards

Looks like my previous response was censored/deleted, so I'll try again.

The company I work for asked me (okay, forced me) to use an iPhone more than two years ago. Right away, I also noticed that after about 15 minutes or so, the iPhone stopped broadcasting its SSID. I really didn't connect the dots until a few days ago. "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting its name (SSID)" seemed like a logical next step. Well, it is working.

For more than 12 years, there's been a lot of discussion about whether hiding the SSID "helps" with Wi-Fi security. I think the Apple engineers probably thought so and got a two-for-one with potential power savings. The old iPhone batteries are an Achilles heel in the phone design.

In addition, I suspect that in the MAC OS, that "Connection to hidden SSID networks" is turned on by default.

Apple is notorious for not fixing Windows bugs unless the European Union brings financial heat. USB-C anybody? I suspect that this bug isn't ever going to be fixed.

It is the same for me when connecting my Win10 laptop wirelessly to the 13 mini, disconnecting radomly every few minutes. But it does work reliably via USB cable. Annoyingly you have to have iTunes installed for this to work (why???).

It works wirelessly with my iPad aswell. In fact, it works so good, that it drains the phone's battery overnight, if I forget to turn off wi-fi on the iPad. So much for disabling the hotspot if there's no traffic ...

Oh, and another one, which does not really belong to this subsection, but anyway ... As of iOS 17, I cannot connect to my car's bluetooth anymore. Yes, it's an old BMW, but still, a month ago the thing was working flawlessly. S#tshow.

Finally after looking for days how to solve this I can share what worked for me. This is for when iphone was dropping personal hotspot with my pc over cable. I reset the settings of ethernet card on MY PC. Reseting iphone network settings didint work, even factory reset didint help. So I went to the Ethernet connection that my iphone created and I choosed reset network, that more or less wiped all the settings of PC network card and it worked. Hope it will work for you guys.

I can add that for example different iphone was working with my PC but my iphone had that issues. So I think it had to "start over" with fresh settings on PC.

I think I have found a real solution to the hotspot dropping everything. Don’t tell anyone that works for Apple or they will find a way to patch this and it won’t work anymore. Go to your setting->display&brightness->autolock->never. The. Go to settings->personal hotspot->allow others to join toggle on. Set your phone down and leave it alone. Plug it up if you can be because this will drain the battery kind of fast. I tried everything else, reset network setting and that was more of a headache than it was worth.

Dunno... Too many responses on this thread to be of any value....

What am *I* going to do?

  • Stop using an iPhone as a hotspot (Thanks, 🍎),
  • get a real WiFi instead, (i.e. continue using the tp-link I had in the past, even though it is "only" LTE), and have a STABLE connection.
  • Forget about an Apple device to be a reliable hotspot.

My experience with Android devices acting as hotspots is 1000x better, but I'll go with a mobile hotspot from a reputable supplier instead of reactivating my Samsung Galaxy S6 (which was more reliable than my iPhone 14 Pro Max).

Dunno why Apple is crippling the "Personal Hotspot"? (deliberately or out of incompetence?). It just turns off after 10 - 20 minutes, no matter whether I am idle, or in the middle of a phone conference in my home office... Unless, of course, I keep "personal Hotspot" settings open in my iPhone settings app for the duration that I need uninterrupted service...

It sure doesn't make me more loyal to the platform. Apple, you're way too expensive to not make all aspects of mobile computing a complete breeze....

I'm just not buying into your annual (or even bi-annual) (or even tri-annual) renewal cycles anymore, and into your commercials with oh-so-diverse and always-bright-teethed-alleged-developers-or-users...

JUST "MAKE IT WORK"?? You truly OWE it to me, ok?
