Updating Past El Capitan 10.11 6

I recently bought a older MacBook Pro I updated it to El Capitan, but now running into issues to advance it further. I have enough space, so that isn't the issue. Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks to MartinR Terminal command…

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 10.14.6


It will place a copy of the installer in your Applications folder and you can use that to create a bootable installer.
