ios update 16.4. Update Apple ID settings log in loop

ios update 16.4. Update Apple ID settings log in loop

brand new iPad Pro 12.9 M2. (Two months old). Just updated to 16.4 and now it keeps requesting to update Apple ID settings by logging in. I log in then it keeps asking for iPad pin and then iPhone pin. I haven’t updated my iPhone yet but i noticed that in my settings on my iphone my keychain syncing had been turned off. It also off on my iPad but as the log in loop fault is occurring I can’t switch it back in. Apart from the log in requests which gets stuck in loop there does not seem to be any actual problems with using my devices yet.

I don’t think I’ve ever had to log in my iCloud after an update before. Is it just new in 16.4?

Should I just wait for another update. I tried logging out and back in on my device but still problem.

Please someone put me out of my misery. Thank you.

Same here, over two hours on the phone with apple support and as of yet no solution. I have a follow up appointment tomorrow, the support guy needed some time to sort a few things out. We'll see if it works out.

Some more details:

  • The issue seems te be related to the encryption on a few services, like KeyChain and HomeKit. Other non-encrypted services continue to work just fine.
  • It happens on all devices related to this iCloud account (iPhone, iPad, MacBook).
  • Resetting a device or settings doesn't help
  • Logging all devices off of iCloud, restarting them and trying to log them in one by one doesn't help
  • Setting up a new device with the borked account doesn't help
  • There is no way to somehow reset the encryption/keychain/whatever (I tried all available options with the support guy).
  • Removing and changing device codes didn't help
  • Removing the recovery key didn't help (which I now cannot enable anymore, it triggers the same loop...)

Let's hope this get fixed very soon.

I have been experiencing this issue since I updated to iOS 16.4 or 16.4.1, I can't recall which version. It has been a month and a half, and despite my efforts, I have been unable to resolve it. I went to great lengths, including erasing all my devices, resetting encrypted data, and ultimately losing valuable information such as my 6 years' worth of health data, keychain passwords, saved Wi-Fi passwords, and website verification codes stored in the keychain. Unfortunately, none of these actions have helped me get rid of the persistent message. I have spent numerous hours researching on the internet and contacting Apple support multiple times, but all in vain. Apple support collected information about the problem and asked me to wait, but the issue remains unresolved. I am extremely frustrated that I can’t use my keychain.

I upgraded my Home app architecture too after 16.4, that’s where there loop started. Annoying is that now my iPad & Mac can’t turn on Keychain so I can’t control my home from multiple devices, except my primary iPhone + watch is last to turn on keychain, but still can’t turn on permanently.

The last device to turn on keychain will show your home, so can only stick to one device.

Same here. I was told by apple engineer at level 2 to wait for apple’s website announcement or email and there is no duration as they will investigate through all the screen recordings. It might be the keychain causing this issues, still remain unclear yet. Hopefully the fix will come soon.

I have lodged a support ticket with Apple also. They did seem to be aware of customers issue’s but not any solutions being worked on. I do think it is a keychain fault. But I’m utterly unimpressed that it has been allowed to occur at all.

Don't understand why it is only a few customers having this issue and not more widespread.

Lets all keep our chins up and hope. ☺️💕

Still persisting on 16.6PB. Ridiculous this issue has persisted since 16.4.

I

have spent hours on call with apple providing diagnostics and screen

recordings with their final solution for me being to "Wait for a future

update"

My homepods can't even play music independently now.

It would be great if we can get greater visability on this by reporting it to other iOS media outlets.

Yes, the issue related to their end to end encryption. So basically any feature that depends on this will be broken (or half broken). Examples: Keychains, Find My, Advanced Data Protection, Passcodes changes, Apple ID changes, 2FA, or HomePods. Could be more.

Best case, please call and have them open a ticket.. and yes, it's a pain as it will take about 1-2 hours of your life, but the more people that open the ticket, the higher priority this gets.

This is a fundamental question to what is this issue related. As iOS can fix it (I saw it when downgrading from 16.4 back to 16.3.1) it is related to the way SW communicates with backend.

In worst case we must wait until completely new FW comes out in September as it looks there is / will be the fix. Current 16.X versions are still buggy.

Okay yes, this sounds like the best explanation I’ve read about this issue. For what it’s worth, if I turn off my iOS / iPadOS device passcode, the issue goes away. And functionalities requiring encryption also require a passcode I believe.

I’ve spent 50+ hours on this, but thought I was the only one having it so went as far as creating a new Apple ID. But the issue persists across Apple IDs sadly.

Same issue here ever since updating to iOS 16.4. Spent around 6 hours on the phone with different levels of Apple support. Regardless scheduled follow up calls I didn’t hear from them so I had to contact support over and over again just to make the new contact person ask me to turn device on/off, change password snd passcode etc.

I changed the device, checked all the settings, at some point I even though I got hacked, but now I see the issue is in the SW.

frustrating & annoying experience thst locked me out of many functionalities of my account.

For future reference: When you install the 16.6 release, please remember to enable your iCloud Keychain by opening the Settings app, tap your your name / Apple ID at the top, then tap on iCloud, then tap on Passwords and Keychain and turn it on. It will prompt you for your Apple ID password and device passcode and will then enable iCloud Keychain.

Note: If you only respond to the prompt to "Update Apple ID Settings" from within the Settings app, it will accept your Apple ID password and the prompt will go-away (which makes you believe everything is OK), but if you look closer, this does not restore or enable your iCloud Keychain. You must do that from within the iCloud settings as noted above.

I had a similar issue. I turned on iCloud Keychain and provided my Apple ID password and device passcode and it worked fine on the iPhone. Then, I did the repeated the procedure on my iPad and it was successful, but it caused the iPhone start prompting me to 'Update Apple ID Settings' again. So, I provided the Apple ID password and device passcode again, and it worked successfully and did not cause any further issues with the iPad. Perhaps the two devices had a slightly different set of keychain records, and so when I update the iPad, it had to re-synch and forced me to update the iPhone a second time.... just a guess, but it did resolve it on both devices.

That’s a concise answer thank you. Before I updated iOS 16.4 my iPad Pro keychain was on and all working fine, even with previous iOS updates. It only occurred in 16.4. And going to the exact settings in iCloud for keychain which persists off. Even when toggling on and validating with password it ‘goes through the motion’ with no error but immediately toggles off. Many attempts.

and now I am getting the update ID settings on my iPhone I deliberately held off updating to 16.4.
