Solution for error (-69874) when mounting/formatting external disk

I had trouble reformatting an external disk that I wish to use for Time Machine and storage. My Mac would present the 750 GB drive as only containing 2 MB. Reformatting or Erasing yielded -69874.

Just wanted to share what worked for me.

I reset the System Management Controller (SMC) as recommended by this existing thread: com.apple.DiskManagement error -69874 - Apple Community
In Disk Utility I selected View > Show all devices
There my drive appeared and I was able to format as "Mac OS Extended" using "Apple Partition Map".

Hopefully this information is not redundant and able to assist someone.
