Copy and paste from iPhone to MacOS not working

I'm on MacOS Monterey and iOS 16.4.1 (both up to date), where copy-and-paste from my iPhone to MacOS is not working. Steps to debug include restarting bluetooth on each device; try pasting into different apps, try selecting/copying the text from the iPhone again, repeat debugging steps. No luck.

Is there a bug in the new revision of iOS that is preventing this operation? How can we fix this?

Hi all,

I have faced the same issue and I've just managed to fix it by myself.

Except for having on all devices Handoff option Enabled you will need to run a command in your mac Terminal app.

Here are the steps:

  • Open the Terminal app on your Mac (Applications > Utilities)

  • Now, we will first delete Clipboard sharing and then enable it again. Here is how:
defaults delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.coreservices.useractivityd.plist ClipboardSharingEnabled

  • Now, copy and paste this code and hit Enter:
defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.coreservices.useractivityd.plist ClipboardSharingEnabled 1

  • Now check if copy and paste is working.

For me, it worked.(iOS 17.2 & macOS Sonoma 14.2)

I hope this helps!

Handoff is not working in between newest Sonoma 14.1.1 and IOS 17.1.1 as per Nov 24 2023.

Newest OS for both iphone and desktop are less detail oriented with bugs in areas that before were totally fine; handoff, Notes starting window is not saving preferences of how it was closed last time, many others (desktop), when texting in iphone the suggestions appear off the traditional position and going to one corner of the screen.

Some of the answers are just specific to the certain user's environment and are not solutions per se. Restart the iPhone, switch "Hand off" on and off are no-brainers and no solution either.

In my case, the iOS software update to 17.3.1 messed it all up, and that's typical of Apple these days; they fix some bugs and create new ones.

Something to consider:

I was trying to use Google Translate on my iPhone to translate from Latin to English and then using translation on my Mac, and it didn't work. I tried all the suggestions in here and they were, frankly, a waste of time.

I found out that what I was doing "wrong" was using Google's copy button instead of the iPhone's routine. Google's button kept saying "text copied", but who knows where to. Using the iPhone's routine worked flawlessly. So, the source of the problem might be the App you are using and not the iOS.

Here's something that worked for me!

Firstly, turn on the airplane mode, wait a few seconds, and turn it off again. Once all the connections are restored, first copy something on your iPhone and try pasting it on your Mac. Once it works (and it will), just try the reverse (copy on Mac and paste it to the iPhone). Worked for me, hope it does for you too! Cheers!

I get this:

Zephs-MacBook-Air:~ zephxfish$ defaults delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.coreservices.useractivityd.plist ClipboardSharingEnabled

2024-04-18 16:04:28.682 defaults[67063:3391566]

Domain (/Users/zephxfish/Library/Preferences/com.apple.coreservices.useractivityd.plist) not found.

Defaults have not been changed.

I tried the second command and there was no response from the system which makes me think it was successful. I ran both commands again, this time got no errors.

However copy/paste is still not working from my Macbook (Air 2020 running 14.4.1) to my phone (11 running 17.4.1). It is working from my

phone to my Mac.

Six pages of replies for a problem that no one should ever have. Apple is busy building ever ultra-faster chips so it can build in AI everywhere but simple basics like this, or like sharing Apple Music song history between devices, recognizing text in images and PDFs, doing Airdrop, not forgetting photo rotation and other edits, syncing the page between Books on different devices, and many more are constantly buggy. Rather Apple should put the AI to work on writing more robust software on their side rather than foist it on us, and stop adding features until they can get their existing ones working consistently.

For me it appears using AirDrop is one way to trigger the issue.

Here's what I did:

  1. Copy/paste from Macbook to iPhone wasn't working
  2. I rebooted my iPhone
  3. Copy/paste from Macbook to iPhone worked
  4. Send an image from Macbook to iPhone with AirDrop
  5. Copy/paste stopped working

Now I'm wondering if AirDrop is doing something specific that cause copy/paste to stop working...
