Apple Watch battery drain

the battery on my apple watch (series 8), purchased in late march, suddenly drains much quicker. i've only had it for a little over a month and i didn't change any settings so this is quite baffling to me.

any idea what is going on?

thanks!

Make sure to turn off background app refresh and  check walkie talkie is not accidentally turned on.

Check there is no workout running (yellow circle at top if screen.)

Make sure you have no VPN or VPN based ad-blocker on the iphone. Uninstall it then remove any profiles (iPhone Settings, General VPN & Device Management)

Force restart your watch i.e. press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds, then release both buttons when you see the Apple logo.

Then while the Watch is restarting Force Restart the paired iphone   Force restart iPhone – Apple Support (UK)

Try it for a couple of days especially if you sync photos to your Watch.

If the battery still drains  then Unpair the watch and then pair it again.

Unpair and erase your Apple Watch – Apple Support (UK)

Set up your Apple Watch – Apple Support (UK)

I have had same problem with my XR updated to 17.4 and watch 7 updated to 10.4, after which the watch drain to zero within 12 hours of charging. I reported the problem and booked aGenius bar session last evening, the Apple advisors were really professional and after some test sessions, they advised to hard reset both my watch 7 and XR and the problems were now gone after another charging session.

I understand its frustrating to experience battery drainage issues with a new device. Apple Watches are premium devices, and it is unlikely that the issue is with the watch itself. Battery drainage can vary based on individual usage and the settings or apps that are active on your Apple Watch. I researched on the issue and find out there are several steps you can take to help reduce battery drain. These include Checking for Software Updates, Restarting Your Apple Watch, and Using Simple Watch Face Complications. There are many other battery saving tips as well. Remember, your usage patterns play a crucial role in battery life, so tailor these suggestions to fit your daily routine for the best results.

My W7 45mm started draining much faster about a month or so ago. No usage change, apps, or anything else changed. For 19 months it been the same, charge it in the late evening, put it on for sleep tracking, used only for notifications and the time (duh). I always end the day with about 50% or so. Now, same pattern and usage, and by the end of the day it's down to 25%.

If you got AppleCare+ with the watch the standard plan is 2 years, so you are still covered at 19 months. Contact Apple Support and arrange to get the battery checked. If it is defective it will be replaced.

It is not normal that we have to do all that nonsense. Why do we have to even after software updates?

Because third party iphone/watch app developers may not have tested against new operating system updates or updated their software. Eg Mobyface is currently reported in this forum as a battery killer.

Absolutely agree that this an issue that Apple is not yet acknowledging. I have an Apple Watch SE with cellular that I use almost exclusively for running. I don’t sleep with my watch on my wrist…it sits in its charger until I put it on at 7:00 AM to go for my 5K. couple weeks ago, as I was nearing the end of my run, my watch turned itself off and I realized when I got home that the battery had drained to zero. I thought perhaps I hadn’t cradled it properly in charger. This morning, today, though I specifically checked battery percentage as I was heading out the door for a run and had 99%. (If you are a runner you know the frustration of buying a 500.00 watch just to track your runs when it can’t do it so, yeah, I checked the battery life before I headed outside) I did complete my 5K and watch seemed to be okay recording it. However as I was walking home from my 5K (yeah, I walk to and from my ideal 5k couse) my watch OS CRASHED as I was checking my walk stats. After it rebooted, my watch indicated I had 10% battery left. PS: I do not listen to music while running at all (I like music but out of an abundance of caution, I don’t listen to music while running). I suspect this issue is something with the last big update (and the subsequent additional “fix” updates).

My Apple Watch 8’s battery used to last 2 days with normal usage. It now drains to empty after 9 hours. It is on an Apple Care plan and I sent it in. They’ve returned it and said they couldn’t find fault. Not sure what to do.

The same battery draining issue is happening with me on my Series 9. I purchased it 7 months ago. It started with slow charging. Since last 1 week my watch is taking 3 hours to fully charge. I am using the apple adapter with original cable. Still it is slow charging. Then from yesterday, the battery is draining in my apple watch without doing anything. It is discharging in 5 hours!! First I thought it was a software problem. I checked but it is running a latest software version. What should I do?

If you purchased 7 months ago your Apple Watch is still in its warranty cover. Contact Apple Support and arrange to get it examined by Apple.

The only update in the last week was the 16.4.1(a) iOS update which was security patch.

You can remove that (a) rapid update from the iPhone if you think it was that, (Settings, General, About, iOS version) but if it was that, then check you don't have any VPN or security apps on the phone as it can cause a lot more traffic between the two devices if it goes wrong.

I own an Apple Watch 8 45mm which I got less than a year ago, recently I noticed that my watch, which I hardly use by the way, started to run down very fast and besides that I noticed for the first time that it gets very hot. Since I hardly wear it at all my battery percentage is 100%! Also I didn't download any apps on them, I read the tracks and noticed that this problem started a year ago! But I'm facing it only now, as well as everyone else after an AMAZING upgrade to version 10 (by the way after the upgrade I noticed that the screen got smaller because of the software) Now my watch, which used to just lie on the table and which I used not more than a couple hours a week, not to mention that I didn't even use all the functions of this watch, started to run out of battery in half a day, lying on the table, although before it could lie for days. I am now afraid to wear it, as it gets very hot and I am afraid it might just explode on my hand

So in conclusion, I can definitely state on my example that this is 100% a software problem, because as I said before, I am one of the few people who have hardly worn the watch since purchase ( the watch was bought in 2023 summer )
