My iPhone 12 all of a sudden couldn’t focus the camera. At the same time, when using the camera, it makes a scratching electric sound in short pulses. Hard restart will not solve the issue. Is this a known problem and how do you fix it?

ok so i went to the genius bar and after running diagnostics they saw my 1x and 2x lenses were broken (i guess the OIS but they didn’t specify). it would’ve been almost $500 to fix it since my screen was cracked so i just got a new phone but like why are we all having this issue in the past two months…..it’s a conspiracy theory i’m actually interested in
Same thing happening to me on iPhone 12. Also, what version of iOS are all of you using currently? I’m still on iOS 16 and have been reluctant to install the 17 because of the battery issues. Does it maybe have to do with the software update or is it unrelated?
My phone was updated to iOS 17 for at least a week or two before the problem started, so I don’t think it’s related. I’m continuing to update to the latest version of 17 in case it fixes it, but nothing so far.
Yes, my iphone 12 camera can't focus. The pictures are blurry and it's not due to a dirty lens. The phone and lens are very clean. When I am taking a photo, I can see when snapping the picture it's unfocused. Does anyone have a fix for this?
I started having this issue a little over a year ago, revisiting this thread because the issue has started back up again. This is 100% a software issue. The problem comes and goes. Some days the camera will be working just fine, then out of nowhere, the same thing happens again. Camera won’t focus along with the scratching of it trying it’s hardest to focus but it never works. Still haven’t found a solution
Same here, iPhone 12 mini. Camera can’t handle faraway focus points. In the past I’ve had hardware issues with an iphone 7 and biking but i haven’t used this one for that. It’s definitely a software issue. Did anyone try backing to a previous software update?
It’s truly shocking how many of us experienced the same issue within the past few months. Gives me some conspiracy vibes. Do you guys know how much it is to fix or exchange the camera? It’s really frustrating and strange. I also have iPhone 12 Pro and it seems like the 12 is the only one that has that issue.
this started happening to me a few days ago. iphone 12, i did not drop it. can’t be a hardware issue if nothing happened and a ton of people seem to be experiencing the same thing at the same time. updated to ios 17 from ios 16 and it didn’t fix it. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, desperately need a solution as i’m not going to buy a new phone just for the 1x camera and also there are no genius bars or apple stores in ireland! so even if i wanted to do that i couldn’t! best i can do is go to a registered refurbisher and pay for them to take it apart which seems like an unnecessary expense for a software issue?
hwy, same thing here. i’m using 12 pro max my camera works well in snapchat but in default cam it is blurry, can’t able to focus specifically my telepoto. my x1 and .5 works well. do you think it is a software problem?
Had this issue since March, took it to the Genius Bar and they said there was nothing wrong with it but suggested I had the camera repaired just in case.
sometimes works fine, other times not so much. Really does sound like a software issue here.
Same thing just started happening 2 months ago. Just 1x camera lens can’t focus far enough. Did hard reset and all but couldn’t fix it.
Either it is software or hardware, the problem clearly can’t be fix by individual and not everyone can effort to buy new phone. Over thousands of people have same issue and Apple should make a special fix program with low cost if it is their hardware problem. Or should address this with new software update as soon as possible
I have an iPhone 12 Pro and just last week my camera started losing the ability to focus in 1x only. 0.5x, 2x, even zooming out to 0.9x and it can focus fine, but specifically 1x it is completely blurry. No scratches or damage to my camera lense or phone. I’ve tried restarts and forced resets and nothing will fix it. Is there a software fix for this?
my back camera works it doesn’t focus out and sometimes when i’m on the back camera it starts to shake and make a weird noise but it won’t go away even with the reset

I am having the same issue iphone mini 12 purchased after launch (2020).
The camera works okay at focus under 1x. I heard the noise a few times but it doesn't happen always.
