Internet Not Working on My Mac?

Hi, I have two Macs, one in a home recording studio and one for other use. On one of the Mac’s, iMac from late 2022 (OS 10.9 Mavericks), my internet does not work since yesterday. Wifi connection is good. Both browsers, Safari and Firefox are not able to do anything. My other Mac the internet is fine. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be?

iMac 24″, macOS 12.2

10.9 Mavericks will not run on a 2022 Mac.

It will run on Macs below

OS X Mavericks - Technical Specifications

up to October 15, 2014. All newer Macs can't run Mavericks.

Incidentally the minimum requirements for El Capitan are the same as Mavericks.

That said, Apple menu -> About This Mac will tell you what you are actually running.

The System Report or Profile in the About This Mac window will give you a Machine ID such as iMac x,y.

The x,y value will help us identify which Mac you have if the About This Mac does not.

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Network will let you determine if you have ethernet or WiFi connectivity. You may need to adapt to ethernet from thunderbolt if present to connect to your modem if the above port is not present.

WiFi connectivity also known as Airport connectivity may fail on 5 Ghz but work on 2.4 Ghz. This can be the case if your WiFi adapter is another room. Check there is send/receive data in the WiFi router happening. If the lights are off, you may need to power cycle the modem first and the WiFi router once the modem shows it has internet. Sometimes the modem and WiFi are the same box.

You can also sometimes make your cell phone into a WiFi hotspot. Let us know if you have an Android or iPhone and we can help you set that up if needed.

Under advanced settings in the Network panel, if the connection is active but only giving you a 169.x.x.x internet address the DHCP lease may need to be renewed. Turn off all proxies, and VPN. The only reason to use VPN is if you are connecting to a school or corporate network where they control the network traffic. In which case, their technical support needs to be contacted to ensure your connectivity is successful.

Reinstalling the OS is difficult without an internet connection, unless your recovery partition is intact. And it is a solution of last resort.

First step is to determine why the internet isn't working. Usually it is due to some outside connectivity issue.

If none appears to be problematic there, and other machines in the same room appear to have WiFi, but not that computer, it is possible the WiFi on the computer is damaged.

But let's isolate who has internet and who does not. Keep in mind if your only other machine is a cell phone, turning off cellular data and then connecting to your home WiFi will allow you to verify whether or not WiFi works on the apps you turn off cellular data.

Your Adobe and your DropBox are both erroring out. I would quit both apps on the menubar that have red indicators.

Can you go to Google and look something up on Safari?

Can you turn off Bluetooth, or do you depend on a wireless keyboard and mouse?

You got to the internet speed test site. It just is not usable once you get there. That means you do have internet. It is just being blocked in some limited fashion. The BT Router may not allow the speed test to go through. I suspect it might be your difficulty in reaching Adobe or Drop box. You may need to download a creative cloud update and/or a DropBox update.

The only brand I can see on it is BT which is the internet service provider. If you go back to page 2 of this thread you will the user interface where the GHz network is indicated “Hub Manager”. I would guess that somehow through that you can select the 2.4GHz network. However, I need Ethernet connection to get to that interface. As you can see, my other computer is on 2.4 and this one Ethernet.

I’ve done the safe mode restart. The only difference I could tell was in the bit where I put my password it had “safe boot” in the menu bar. After that everything looked the same. The internet connection was exactly the same. It goes to the Google home page eventually but nowhere else.

Did I do it right, or did I exit safe mode when I entered my password?

Yeah, it’s still in safe mode, when it went to sleep, when I woke it up it still said “safe boot” on the screen where I put my password in! It’s still the same. I doubt this info will make any difference but I had a power cut last night and it was only after that that my internet connection stopped working. The Mac was on when the power cut happened so it didn’t get shut down properly when the power went.

After that I couldn’t get the internet again. I don’t know if that is the cause or just a coincidence. It effects all browsers because I installed Chome this morning to see if that works and that is exactly the same too!

The only other device I can use/test with a Wifi internet connection is my recording studio Mac which I’m on now. My mum’s computer doesn’t use Wifi. She’s running an Ethernet cable from the router. Could you let me know what I should try/check next. Thanks.

There's nothing wrong with the Wifi, not according to the graphics! The logo is full on the main navigation bar, next to the date and time. ect. In system preferences it it shows it with a green light and connected under “Networks” I will send you some screen savers tomorrow morning. UK time, its very late now.

I'll get the exact age of the computer tomorrow too, but it's definitely newer than 4 years. I bought it new in September 2022. I'll see what you think about resetting the PRAM tomorrow. Thanks again for your help.

It's showing it connected to mine. I can get a tiny bit of connection. On Firefox it eventually takes me to my home page which is Google. I can put a search in and eventaully the results show up. It just doesn't have enough connection to go anywhere else. I managed to use the test internet speed feature on Google (in Firefox) and it is showing the tiniest ammount of connection. I'll send you some images over of what's going on in a minute.
