Internet Not Working on My Mac?

Hi, I have two Macs, one in a home recording studio and one for other use. On one of the Mac’s, iMac from late 2022 (OS 10.9 Mavericks), my internet does not work since yesterday. Wifi connection is good. Both browsers, Safari and Firefox are not able to do anything. My other Mac the internet is fine. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be?

iMac 24″, macOS 12.2

10.9 Mavericks will not run on a 2022 Mac.

It will run on Macs below

OS X Mavericks - Technical Specifications

up to October 15, 2014. All newer Macs can't run Mavericks.

Incidentally the minimum requirements for El Capitan are the same as Mavericks.

That said, Apple menu -> About This Mac will tell you what you are actually running.

The System Report or Profile in the About This Mac window will give you a Machine ID such as iMac x,y.

The x,y value will help us identify which Mac you have if the About This Mac does not.

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Network will let you determine if you have ethernet or WiFi connectivity. You may need to adapt to ethernet from thunderbolt if present to connect to your modem if the above port is not present.

WiFi connectivity also known as Airport connectivity may fail on 5 Ghz but work on 2.4 Ghz. This can be the case if your WiFi adapter is another room. Check there is send/receive data in the WiFi router happening. If the lights are off, you may need to power cycle the modem first and the WiFi router once the modem shows it has internet. Sometimes the modem and WiFi are the same box.

You can also sometimes make your cell phone into a WiFi hotspot. Let us know if you have an Android or iPhone and we can help you set that up if needed.

Under advanced settings in the Network panel, if the connection is active but only giving you a 169.x.x.x internet address the DHCP lease may need to be renewed. Turn off all proxies, and VPN. The only reason to use VPN is if you are connecting to a school or corporate network where they control the network traffic. In which case, their technical support needs to be contacted to ensure your connectivity is successful.

Yeah, I can search in Safari. It’s very slow to get there and very slow to bring the results up.

I can connect my keyboard with the cable supplied with the Mac and I can use an old apple mouse with a cable via an old USB to USB-C adapter. Therefor, I could turn blue tooth off and still use the mouse and keyboard.

There is no error on Dropbox or Adobe. In both it’s just a message. Various messages in each but not an error. Why would the BT router be effecting only one computer? Adobe and Dropbox are upto date and neither have an error. Thanks again.

I’ve plugged it in downstairs next to the router so I can connect with a cable. I’ve connected an Ethernet cable from the router using the adapter, and tuned Wifi off, in “Network” is says Ethernet not connected but AX88179A is connected! Anyway, internet works perfectly!

I was wrong and it is a Wifi issue. What should I do when I take the Mac back upstairs? Thanks again.

Ok, I am going to need some help! Screen saver of interface attached. I’m a bit confused about what is what at the moment. The Mac with the Wifi fault is now attached via Ethernet with an USB-C adapter and labelled as AX88179A in Network. My mum’s computer is attached via Ethernet and my other Mac is attached by Wifi. I guess that is the 2.4GHz. What should I do next?

Ok, I’ll contact BT. For your information. My iMac without the Wifi fault is connected on 2.4Ghz, my iMac with the Wifi fault is connected via Ethernet. If I turn Wifi on on the iMac with the Wifi fault it shows it connected on 2.4GHz (not Ethernet) but internet doesn’t work. In other words Hub Manager shows it connected to 2.4GHz but it still doesn’t work. When I phoned BT yesterday they said they suspected that my computer was at fault but I’ll get back to you about that later. Thanks again.

I phoned BT, and they said there is no point in trying to connect it via the 5GHz instead of the 2.4GHz because the Wifi is at fault on the iMac. Basically they have said it will be exactly the same on either network, 2.4GHz or 5GHz. I guess now I need to know what I need to do to repair the iMac and get the Wifi working again? Thanks again for your help. What should I do next?

I have joined like that but it hasn’t made any difference at all. Have you or anybody else heard of this problem before on Monterey? “I found this information in a YouTube video “If you’re connected to your wifi but you can’t get any websites to load you need to flush DNS cache?” Could that be a solution? Do you have any other ideas? Thanks again for your help.

I think I did it OK. After I typed my password and pressed enter it moved to a new line. Then I quitted Terminal. Then I restarted my Mac and tried to use the Wi-fi. It hasn’t made any difference, on either location, Automatic or the new one I made. Maybe I should take the machine to the Apple Centre for investigation? Have you got any other ideas? Thanks again.

Well, I’m baffled! The Wifi worked perfectly in the Apple Centre so there is no fault with the Mac. The guy deleted the Wifi option I was using to connect through in the services list in Network Preferences (Automatic Location) and made new one called “WIFI Home” However, when I got home it was still exactly the same.

Wifi works perfectly on my Mac in the Apple Centre but NOT in my house! Has anybody get any suggestions? Thanks again.
