Macbook Pro wi fi slows down when connected to external monitor

I have a Macbook Pro M2, and whenever I connect to an external monitor (does not matter whether HDMI or thunderbolt port) the wi fi slows down significantly. and the difference is so stark...

Same with power - when I connect to power via thunderbolt, wi fi slows down. With some of the routers, switching from 5G to 2.4G helps, with some others it does not.

This is a very obvious flow that Apple needs to correct and costing me a lot of productivity especially in conference calls.

Thank you for the generic answer. However, this does not explain the loss in speed when connected to the monitor. here is the experiment:

the monitor and MacBook are on the desk next to each other.

  1. when I connect the monitor, connections is slow or non existent. note that both computer and display are plugged in.
  2. when I disconnect the monitor, the connection is normal.

this is not explained by the positioning of the laptop and monitor vis a vis the router.

I think this is a bug that apple has to fix rather than recommending how we should hold and use our computers

Some advice about the impact of interference on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi was posted in the first few replies on this thread. One includes a Trade Press article about a display that generated so much interference, it could knock out a Router if placed too close. There are also suggestions pulled from Apple articles about how to place your display and computer to minimize interference. Be sure you read all the way through from the beginning.

if you still have explicit questions after reading that, Readers are eager to make more suggestions.

A quick solution is to use 2.4 Ghz band from your router (if available) when faced with this issue.

5GHz connections already known to have trouble with obstacles like walls and steep angles, and whatever the display port is doing is just adding to the signal trouble thus resulting in wifi blackout.

May be Apple should look into hardware design to solve it.

Thanks

if this is a specific third-party display that is causing the problem, the issue is already identified.

That third-party display is creating Wi-Fi interference so strong, it cuts your internet speed in half.

--------

At the highest resolutions, the CABLES required to run these displays are not trivial.

what display(s) are being used?

what connection methods are being used?

This is NOT a discussion about the general case of how to connect displays. This is a discussion about users encountering very obscure issues. if you want general advice, please start a NEW discussion and post your Mac model year, your version of MacOS, and your proposed connection method including LENGTH and TYPE of cables.

<<. if I connect an HDMI cable directly to my MacBook Pro, I may have internet network problems. >>

I said nothing like that.

<< if I connect via a HUB (or other external device) and use adequately equipped devices, I won't have any problems? >>

I said nothing like that either.

The preponderance of evidence from the posters here leads me to believe that there is a badly-designed/defective display involved in the specific issues posted here. This is NOT a general discussion, and Readers can not just read the last post and take away ANY recommendations that apply generally.

Its a Dell Monitor, and the best part that rules out everything else is this...

On the same desk I tested with a ThinkPad running Ubuntu and another HP Laptop runnign Windows.

Now everything is same, same Distance, same Monitor, same Cable, same Internet Router.

Internet signal/speed has no issue whatsoever in ThinkPad and HP Laptop when connecting external display!!

So I guess it puts spotlight on this really being an Apple issue, isn't it?

In my case the problem was that my desk was setup in another room than the router, and I faced this issue only when I connect the external monitors.

What started working for me that I accidentally placed my MacBook's lid at an obtuse angle ~120 degrees while being on the 2.4 GHz network. 5 GHz still behaves the same and is see the issue.

I have the same exact issue... I have a dongle with HDMI and for a while I thought it was my connection that had gone bad but indeed, whenever I watch something in streaming youtube or else and I plug it to my projector, it stops....it has to be something from your end, I have a m2 also, because I play the video and it is ok but whenever I connect it it stops
