Backup No Longer Working Ove Xfinity Wi-Fi - Getting "Poor Network Conditions" Error Message

I can no longer backup over Xfinity Wi-Fi. I've reset the network settings, reset the modem, and even got a new Xfinity modem. I keep getting an error message saying "The last backup could not be completed because of poor network conditions". The network conditions are not poor.

This started with getting a new gateway from Xfinity and the upgrade is it now has IPV6 with IPV4. The issue is not all IOS processes are IPV6 compatible and there is no way to disable IPV6 on Xfinity. The only work around is to get your own router that has this function and disable it until IOS does the update. This sucks but there’s no other way. 😔

Kevin -

Are you watching the Reddit discussion? That's where all new info will be posted. Here is the latest from Xfinity, posted yesterday:

"Once we have an update patch, yes it will be pushed out automatically to

the affected network equipment. These updates typically go out

overnight when network traffic is at its lowest."

I would also check your Gateway occasionally to see if there's been a new update to your firmware (compare old firmware # to what shows).

Was helping my friend troubleshoot this and we found a workaround that I'll detail here (which may be a bit redundant). Not sure if this will work for everyone (and I won't be replying to questions) but it's something. Ultimately it seems like this will be an issue that Apple and Xfinity will need to sort out.

The short version is: his iPad and iPhones were able to backup and get updates when connected to the 2.4 GHz network.

To split the network bands: go to Wi-Fi Details > Edit Wi-Fi Settings > Split Bands and then rename either the 2.4 GHz network with something new, or rename the other two networks and then save your settings. And then connect to the 2.4 network and everything should work (hopefully).

I also cannot backup to icloud or do updates on Xfinity wifi and get the same error message as previous person - "The last backup could not be completed because of poor network conditions". I have been working on this issue since April when i purchased my ipad air 5th generation from Verizon. I can do both updates and backups on Verizon cellular service but not Xfinity wifi. I have been back and forth so many times between Verizon, Xfinity and Apple its ridiculous. I finally got a woman at Apple yesterday (8/26/23) who told me that Apple does not work on the new 6 mgh wifi - it needs to be set back to 5. When I asked her if all my other devices would work after setting it back - as we have firesticks, tv's computers, other tablets, etc - she said yes they should. I am currently waiting for xfinity to call me back to see if this solves the issue.

You may want to log into your gateway through a browser and check which band devices are connected to. I see conflicting results between the app and the admin tools.

If your devices don’t have the 6ghz hardware, it won’t be the problem. More likely TCP and UDP ports for  services were missed or typo-ed in the firmware that started going out in June. The xB8 gateways were working fine since last year for those of us that had them then. There are also some reports that the xB7 modems were having the same issues.

Both my husband and I are having the same problem with our 10th generation Ipads. My last back up was on the 16th June and his was on the 28th June. We also are unable to download and install the ios updates…Spent a couple of hours on the phone today with apple troubleshooting this to no avail…ended up with my ipad reset to factory settings 😞…had an appointment at the local Apple store this afternoon and they were able to do the backups….they suggested we reset our xfinity router via the xfinity app when we got back home….we did this and we’re able to do another backup when it came back on line….but alas this hasn’t fixed the problem as when we came home from dinner and tried to do the ios update and another backup , we still have the same problem…backup can’t be completed due to poor network conditions….This is so frustrating because our internet speed is excellent and we have no problem streaming, internet searching etc……The guys at the apple store said this problem was new to them and said it’s xfinity that’s the problem…

I'm not saying this solution will work for everyone but before taking the step of downgrading my Xfinity router, I went to my xfinity.com account and reset the router. I am now able to backup my iPad Mini6 and iPhone 14 and update the software to 16.5.1. Earlier I tried just unplugging and replugging the router but that had no effect. Those more technically savvy than I am might understand what has happened.

I've had the same problem doing backups on our iPad Pros, but we've had no problem getting updates on our iPhones or iPads, and the iPhones backup fine. We also have the XB8 router from Xfinity. I have a suggestion for a workaround that I tried, and it was very successful for me. I connected an ethernet dongle to my iPad to do the backup. It's not the way it's meant to be done, but it works.

I finally gave up on Apple and/or Comcast fixing this issue.

Bought a lightning to ethernet adapter for my iPhone 13, and just ordered a USB-C to ethernet adapter for my two iPad Pros. Successfully updated my iPhone software and did my first backup since June.

Thank you to Apple and Comcast for costing me money that I shouldn't have had to spend.
