Sidecar can't connect using USB-C via Dongle

I'm trying to connect my M2 Macbook Air to my 3rd gen ipad pro (2018). I have to use a wired connection because, as other forums have shown, the wireless connection is unusably unstable.

The problem is my MBA only recognizes the ipad when it is directly connected. When I try to use a dongle (I need the other usb port for another peripheral) it doesn't recognize the iPad is connected.

So:

iPad -> Macbook = OK

iPad -> Dongle -> Macbook = not OK

Anyone else run into this? Do I need to a different dongle or something? I'm using the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple

The dongle is your issue. The USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter has 3 ports. The USB-C port is for power delivery to the Mac only.

The HDMI port is for Video output only.

You need a different dongle or dock that has a USB-C data port.
