iPhone 13 Overheating after iOS Update

Anyone else experiencing overheating since last update to iOS 16.5.1?

My iPhone 13 max has been mostly perfect. It has the basic issues that all phones have however I noticed two issues since this last update to 16.5.1.

1) my battery dies fast

2) my phone overheats while just sitting there.

I turned off my phone and turned it back on. Not using it and it not plugged in, it overheated.

if I plug it in while on, I get… charging will resume later, your device is too hot. (But I just plugged it it)

iPhone 13 Overheating after iOS Update

Anyone else experiencing overheating since last update to iOS 17.4.

my phone is just sitting on my bed, not my charger and I pick it up to use it and the glass is extremely hot. I also have a case on it and I can feel the heat through the back of the case as well. Have never an issue with my iPhone. What is going on??

I have had an iPhone since the first one ever came out and now seriously thinking of switching to android because iPhones are NO LONGER durable as they used to be when they were made with metal. The glass on it (front and back) is easy to break, even with a case on it, it’s ridiculous! I mean seriously whose bright idea was this to make a glass back?

Thanks! I reported. In the drop-down asking for iOS version, the most recent version you can select is 16.4.1. Must look good for their stats to not include, I don’t know… what everyone is using!?

You are welcome.

All you need to do is mention to which iOS version your feedback submission pertains. Include it in the Comments pane.

Thanks for doing your part. It will help many, for certain.

Been there done that. 47gb out of 128 used. I have tried every fix I have read about except wiping out my phone and starting from scratch. Again if nothing changes but the upgrade and all this starts what else can it be? why wasn't the app trying to access my audio before the upgrade? I really do appreciate the info and don't want to sound unappreciative but I did nothing at all but download and install the ( so called) upgrade. hopefully a fix comes soon.

I am going back to an Android phone. Tired of all the constant apple updates & my phone overheating all the time. 😁

Good plan. Android phones don’t have any of those messy updates that fix security vulnerabilities, so you won’t be bothered (except by hackers getting into your phone and stealing your data).

And you will find that Android phones also get hot when charging or doing heavy work.

me too. turned it off. let it cool. turned it back on and immediately started heating up. not in direct light. took off the cover. battery at 85%. No apps open.

There is a difference between overheating and getting warm in use. If the phone’s internal temperature exceeds a safe limit the phone shuts down and displays a message saying that it has shut down and cannot be restarted until it cools off. If this happens regularly your phone has a hardware problem and needs to be fixed.

If you DO NOT see this message your phone has not overheated, no matter how warm it feels. If the phone says that charging has paused to allow the phone to cool, that is NOT overheating. That is NORMAL when you fast charge.

iPhones have always paused at 80% when fast charged to allow the battery to cool down, but they didn’t display a message; they just paused until the phone's temperature stabilized.  Users have sometimes asked in ASC why it has “stopped charging at 80%,” and this is the answer; that it has to cool down, and will resume after a pause.

With iOS 16.5 and later Apple has added a message SAYING why it has paused. But if you had never noticed that it paused at 80%, then this sounds like the update broke something. It's normal, just more information about why it paused.

yes, overheating to the point i could not hold iphone13pro- I knew something was wrong for months on this, I tried everything everybody else was trying-and the northern Michigan this should not ever overheat. Magically, today when I did the new 16.6 update, same phone with same charger in the same house and on the same property has felt cool as a cucumber like it did before. Hopefully for those of us who are not on extended care any longer will get a big break from Apple when our phones burn up in our pocket or our batteries prematurely die. I hate to see what peoples phones were doing below the 45th!

sure, genius(I hope you agree that is a factual statement), when you live in a big city like you obviously do and don't have to drive 80 to 100 miles just to find an Apple facility, and you haven't had phone service for 24 hours because your phone shut down because it overheated-again like it had several times in the since they ridiculous obviously(and yes, that's factual) operating system update is the only time that it has ever overheated-don't be a smart donkey, if you can't say something nice to people like me on the Internet then come see me face-to-face. I hope you can read a GPS to find your way here though, because you will never get here following a GPS-I do not even have phone service in my own house with my own cell phone other than because I have spectrum Wi-Fi to talk on-so much for T-Mobile's phone system-and after 23 years with Sprint, I always thought they had the worst system there was(the only reason I stayed was because they did have all in one), so I have VerizonTower on my property in my backyard and I have no phone service until I get close enough to the house so spectrum connects me. Barking up the wrong tree dude-come visit though I would love to speak to you face to face. I do not believe in ranting and raving on the Internet, but for you I made an exception(that's a factual statement to-you can check it out with all of my grandkids who have masters degrees including in computer engineering). I feel sorry that I got this email with your statement in it, I do not have enough techie training nor education in these devices to understand why I would get such an email, but I felt compelled to at least respond so that you know there is at least one other idiot out here. And have a good day.

I was an avid Android Note user for several years starting with the Note 7… but I quickly realized that Android phones, and not just the Note series, are basically a pocket sized windows computer. Meaning it has all the same random, annoying AF updates and, especially, “glitches” and “hang-ups” just like a windowslaptop Windows based laptop or a Chrome Book. I was an IPhone user first, then when the Note 7 came out I stayed with the Note phones for 3-4 yrs. Then back to IPhone. So I’ve dealt with the ANNOYING AF issues that both phones have, and IMHO, IPhone issues are MUCH more Tolerable lol. My mother was using a Galaxy phone for several years. She’s 74 years, and the smartest person I know, but she doesn’t have a “Tech- Thumb” to save her life lol. I was ALWAYS having to help her with that dang POS phone. This year I added her to MY cell phone plan with Xfinity and finally convinced her to switch to Apple …. It’s been about 6 months now and I’ve only had to help her TWICE with her IPhone. She LOVES it! She even TAUGHT HERSELF how to TEXT!!!! Something she never could do on her android, no matter HOW MANY times I tried to teach her lol.

Basically, and again just my opinion, switching to an android to escape Apples hardware and IOS Update issues etc, is just trading one companies issues for another companies issues, and for me at least, the lesser of the two evils is Apple’s IPhone lol. Also, after SO MANY IOS updates over the years, nearly all of which are intended to have “ Bug Fixes” for the PREVIOUS updates, I advise users to NEVER have have your iPhone set to automatically download and install new IOS updates. I wait AT LEAST 2 weeks, and usually longer than that, before downloading and installing a new Update. When I know Apple has pushed a new update out, I start searching and reading reviews regarding any issues that update has. Some times, the issues are things I can live with and not “detrimental” to my phone and phone usage, or the issues or problems are overshadowed by the GOOD aspects of the update, such as security patches, etc… so I’ll go ahead and update my phone. But to be honest lol, those instances are rare, and especially so since approximately IOS Update 15 to current.

But again, this is just how **I** handle updates.

I still on IOS 16.5.1, and since that update, my 14 Pro Max will randomly claim my phone is overheating but it only gives this warning when my phone is connected to the charger. It only does this when the screen is closed and the phone is just laying there charging. So when I go to use the phone, it will display the message that basically says (I can’t remember the exact wording) that “iPhone will temporarily pause charging until phonebreturns to normal” or something to that effect. But the phone doesn’t even feel “warm”, let alone “hot”…. My 14 Pro Max, that I’ve had since June, hasn’t literally overheated or been “hot” to the touch since I got it. Prior to that, my 13 Pro Max only got “hot” to the touch from overheating ONCE, and that was while on I was vacationing in Daytona Beach, FL and it was HOT AF and I accidentally left the phone in the car for a bit.

As far as battery goes, I don’t think my 14 Pro Max has experienced any battery drain issues. Not that I’ve noticed at least. I try and keep my phone charged at all times to at LEAST 50%. When it reaches 50%, I connect to the Lightening Charger until it’s at least at the 90%, and usually I continue to use the phone while it’s charging. I also keep it connected to the charger overnight every night.

That message is NOT saying the phone is overheating; it says it is pausing charging to allow it to cool off.

Define “overheat”. There is only ONE meaning with respect to an iPhone: An overheated iPhone will shut down completely and display a message saying it cant be used until it cools off. If that doesn’t happen it may be warm, but it has not overheated.

Of course the phone runs hot now, and even though it is an Apple product error has anyone received any relief without a negative impact? The review above saying the new update fixed it is not true. It’s odd because due to all the restrictions due to COVID 19 the phone itself has not really been out of the house.
