keyboard commands

I have a 2022 Studio, Ventura 13.1. And my wired Mac keyboard may be 10 years old.

I assigned keyboard shortcuts to move apps from side to side on one monitor, and monitor to monitor.

But, within minutes, it forgets the commands.

I tried using another old Mac keyboard, and same thing.

Help?

Thank you for the images, they do clarify the problem.

I suggest that you first restart in Safe Mode. See if the problem persists.

Then restart normally and see if it is working.

As P. Phillips mentioned, there is a new version out, but I don't expect that just updating will solve this, because it is probably something specific to your setup - either a bad cache (in which case the above trip to Safe Mode should help) or some other form of software conflict.

If the problem persists: Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

Thanks.

As you stated, I go to System Settings->Keyboard->Keyboard Shortcuts..

My keyboard is a standard Mac keyboard.

I want to "Move window to left side of screen" and to the right.

That used to work pretty reliably, then I put in keyboard commands to move windows from monitor to monitor, and that's when things went awry.

Attached is what I see. Those are not the key commands I set, but that I what appears immediately after.

Thanks. I followed the 'start in safe mode' instructions as best I could.

After I selected the volume and held down the SHIFT key, I got the option to CONTINUE, but not an option to CONTINUE IN SAFE MODE.

When the computer turned off (after holding down the power button) the screen was black, and I lost the ability to use my mouse, so I navigated with the arrows.

Long story short, the computer restarted, but I could see nothing about SAFE BOOT in the menu bar.

I presume that menu bar is at the top?

Any pointers for retrying starting in safe mode? I'm sure it's somehow my fault, but all I could see was "continue" and not "continue in safe mode."

At worst, this is a feature I could live without. I use "Stage Manager" off and on, and I thought that might cause the glitch, but the problem persists with I'm using Stage Manager or not.

FWIW, once you get to the screen with the drive and Options icons, when you click on the drive icon to select it, you should see "Continue" underneath. Then you press the shift key. You should be taken to a log in screen which does say "Safe Boot" in the menu bar. Once you log in and get to the Desktop, "Safe Boot" is no longer listed in the menu bar.

Thanks. I am sorry to be so mentally slow.

  1. Should I go into safe mode with a wired keyboard and mouse?
  2. After I'm in safe mode, then what? Wait a minute or two and restart?

As a further diagnostic, when I try to move this window to the left side, by using Opt Com left arrow, instead of moving to the side, new Safari window opens up. I get similar occurrence with I try to move an Apple mail window.

You're welcome. You don't seem slow.

Should I go into safe mode with a wired keyboard and mouse?

I thought you were… "And my wired Mac keyboard may be 10 years old."

After I'm in safe mode, then what? Wait a minute or two and restart?

The idea of booting into Safe Mode is see if you have the same problem as you do in normal mode.

You're welcome. As I mentioned before…

"You should be taken to a log in screen which does say "Safe Boot" in the menu bar. Once you log in and get to the Desktop, "Safe Boot" is no longer listed in the menu bar."

When I got into what I suspected was safe mode, my finder function no longer worked. Is that normal?

Sorry, I don't know what "finder function" you are referring to.

So, how long to stay in safe mode, just long enough to check things out then restart?

Yep.
