Optimized battery charging issue solved ( MBP 2020, macOS Ventura )

I've fixed the issue of optimized battery charging feature and now it is working.

It looks like so called learning algorithm can not track the charging status if you connect the charger before you start the computer.

Here are the steps you need to do to fix the issue.

  • Turn off the optimized battery charging feature (Uncheck the "optimised battery charging" option in the battery settings ) ( this is necessary to make a fresh start )
  • Unplug the power cable
  • Restart the computer
  • After the restart turn on optimized battery charging
  • And then plug your charging cable

These steps helped me to resolve the issue instantly.

Original orientations from @kivanc48 (first post) worked for me. Thank you

Macbook M1 MAX

6 days plugged via usb-c (I use two monitors as charger via usb-c, not the magsafe adapter), and the battery was at 100% and in green state.

Steps I followed:

  • activated sleep mode
  • unplugged the monitors (not using magsafe charger here)
  • used the computer for 5 mins
  • shutdown
  • start
  • login
  • plugged the first monitor (waited image appears)
  • plugged the second monitor (waited image appears)
  • closed the lid (do not need it as I am using external displays)
  • 1 minute later my mac activated the paused state battery (optimized charging)

hello whoever you are, you seem oddly interested in my personal viewpoint.

The reality is that this feature does not work, you can find all information you need in official documentation written by apple such as About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone - Apple Support

this is not "something somebody wrote on the internet"

It is not working, still waiting for a proper fix

The battery charge optimizer on this MacBook M2 Sonoma does not function. At nearly two years old the battery has only been at 100% charge even though the optimizer is on. My question is now should I take it off the adapter cable and allow the battery to discharge periodically? Would an app like AlDente be a good choice for keeping the charge at 80%?

AlDente will keep your Mac at a preset percentage.

The free version keeps it at exactly that percentage.

The paid version will allow the battery to get a little exercise, by allowing it to drain a bit, and bring it backup, so the battery is not static at say 80%.

Yes, I own a copy of AlDente, and have paid for the extra features.

I obtained AlDente BEFORE Apple introduced Optimized Charging.

What I've found with respect the Apple's Optimized charing is if you are totally random on when you remove your Mac from power, it is difficult of the Mac to predict when it should charge the Mac to 100% before you take it off of power, so it just keeps it at 100%.

If you are sitting on the charger all the time, or if you have a habit of removing your Mac from the charger at 7:15am (more or less) every day before going to work, then it can predict when it needs to bring the Mac up from 80% to 100% in time for you to start using the Mac via the battery.

I have a MacBook M3 Pro Max with Sonoma for about 2 1/2 months, and have been using optimized battery charging for about two months. I always keep it plugged in except maybe once a week when I shut it down and unplug it for a few hours. After a couple weeks it started dropping the battery level in increments and charging it up till finally it settled at 80% after about a week, we pretty much stayed for another month or so, in last week or 10 days it's been fully charging at 100% and I don't know what's different or why it's doing that--my usage pattern has not changed. I do see that once it started charging again to 100%, the maximum charge capacity, which was initially 243 mAh over the design capacity, but dropped down about 40 mAh, has come back up 20 or 21 mAh. So maybe it will go for cycles where it keeps it at 100% for a while, which may be beneficial, I don't know.

When you say unchecking the optimized battery charging option is necessary to make a fresh start, do you mean the whole learning process, which took like three weeks on my new MacBook before it settled on 80% for long periods of time, or does it where it left off and start charging to 80% right away? After my recent shutdown and unplug and restart a few hours later, where I plugged it in first and then restarted it, initially it was at 80% then shortly thereafter went up to 100% which it has also done in the past when restarted and plugged in this way, and usually only takes part of a day to go back to 80%. But this time it taken like 30 hours--I was just about to try your procedure here when ironically, the charging plug light turned orange, and it's on its way to 80% I assume--it's 98% currently after a few minutes. Maybe next time when I have to turn it off and unplug it I will try restarting it before plugging it back in to see if that makes a difference. I also tried turning optimized battery charging off for a few seconds and turning it back on again when it doesn't go back to 80% after a restart, but it's hard to tell if that speeds up the process because it doesn't act immediately if it does anything. and it was quite a few hours ago when I did it this time.

Worked perfectly on my iphone up until ios 17. I generally charge my phone while I sleep, 5-7hrs at night during the week, usually around the same time. Weekends are completely random. Used to be it'd learn the pattern in the run of a week. Mixing things up on the weekend never caused any problems, it just wouldn't kick in when I charged it at random times on the weekend. It stopped working after updating to ios 17 and hasn't worked since. I have no idea if it's broken, or something was changed and my schedual is no longer consistent enough for it to learn. All I know is used to work great, now it doesn't seem to work at all.

Doesn't optimized battery charging on an iPhone work differently than on a MacBook, in that on an iPhone it will only partially charge, until not too long before it thinks you will need it and then charge it to 100%? Whereas optimized battery charging on MacBook keeps it at 80% all the time unless it is interrupted by unplugging or turning it off, wherein it takes a little time to go back to 80% after restarting and plugging it in again?
