Can’t Generate App-Specific Password

I had to reset my my Macbook Air to factory settings. I’m trying to create app-specific passwords, fort example to add my iCloud email account to Outlook.

When I go to create a password, rather than getting the password as usual, I get the following message: "Continue on one of your devices. On an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch go to Settings > Apple ID. On a Mac go to System Preferences or System Settings > Apple ID."

I’ve never seen this before. This also happens on my iMac.I go to Apple ID, but then what? Nothing happens.

Has anyone encountered this? Even the Apple support page Sign in to apps with your Apple ID using app-specific passwords - Apple Support does not mention this.

Has anyone encountered this? Any ideas on how to get the password?

Thanks.

I had this same issue and did the following:

  1. I went to system settings -> passwords
  2. "Passwords are Locked" -> authenticated
  3. Security Recommendations -> deleted all of the old passwords (They show compromised)
  4. Logged back into appleid.apple.com -> generate app specific passwords and it worked.

Good Luck!

Frisby you are a genius and a lifesaver! I’d been trying to resync my iCloud calendar to my Alexa after changing my apple password and kept running into the same problem. Just when I was ready to give up hope, this worked! Logging in as my @icloud email finally got the app-specific password to finally work! To anyone else having this problem, this is the solution!!

You need to be signed into the device where the non-Apple app is. So for example if you’re wanting to create an app specific password for Outlook on a Windows 11 computer, then you need to be logged into your Apple account on the Windows 11 computer. Then you will be able to generate the password for Outlook (or whatever app you are running).

I didn’t sign in using biometrics data. I signed in by typing on a computer that doesn’t even have the option of biometric data.

It doesn’t work on safari, it works on chrome.

I mentioned it again because tech support doesn’t know about it and the comment was far down, so I thought it was worth mentioning again.

It is less hilarious that I spend over 45 minutes on the phone with Apple Care tech-support with a senior advisor.

Who then spent many many minutes, displaying a complete lack of basic knowledge of what an app specific password, even was why you would use it, and an even more glaring lack of knowledge about basic computer things

I was using a work laptop with a VPN which was off and she said that was the reason that I had to remove the VPN

So I did this on my phone, my iPad and my other laptop and still got the same

She still thought it was the VPN
