Can’t Generate App-Specific Password

I had to reset my my Macbook Air to factory settings. I’m trying to create app-specific passwords, fort example to add my iCloud email account to Outlook.

When I go to create a password, rather than getting the password as usual, I get the following message: "Continue on one of your devices. On an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch go to Settings > Apple ID. On a Mac go to System Preferences or System Settings > Apple ID."

I’ve never seen this before. This also happens on my iMac.I go to Apple ID, but then what? Nothing happens.

Has anyone encountered this? Even the Apple support page Sign in to apps with your Apple ID using app-specific passwords - Apple Support does not mention this.

Has anyone encountered this? Any ideas on how to get the password?

Thanks.

I had this same issue and did the following:

  1. I went to system settings -> passwords
  2. "Passwords are Locked" -> authenticated
  3. Security Recommendations -> deleted all of the old passwords (They show compromised)
  4. Logged back into appleid.apple.com -> generate app specific passwords and it worked.

Good Luck!

I have an iMac, iPhone 14, and a new Galaxy S23 Ultra. Of course, those first couple were easy. However, logging into my iCloud email on the Galaxy was difficult because there seems to be a bug in Safari with AppleID related stuff. I was able to easily create an app specific password for my Galaxy using Chrome instead of Safari. It's pretty stupid but it works. As mentioned already they have nothing written in the support threads so this was the easiest workaround. Hope this helps. (Also you can use your phone to login to apple on Chrome via QR code and Face ID so you don't have to type in your password.)

I finally found this workaround using Chrome browser too, and it worked....it's almost as if the 'closed' environment doesn't want to allow us to use anything but the usual products. I've recently switched to Motorola Z 2023 flip phone and love it, in addition to my other Apple iPads, Macs, etc. etc. Turning off iMessage completely was a pain though; but, i was tired of getting all my messages on EVERY single one of my Apple products.

This is a shame. I tried to get an app specific password for Outlook for Mac and encountered this issue. I saw a popup that said I should continue on another Apple device. That didn't work. I followed someone's recommendation to use Chrome instead of Safari. That worked. It's a shame that a third party browser works to complete an Apple process and Safari does not.

I just spoke to Apple Support and they are aware of this issue. There is workaround available that lets you stay in Safari:

When you login to appleid.apple.com, when you get the prompt for TouchID or FaceID, click on "Use a different iCloud Account" and then manually login with your email and password.

This worked for me while I was on support with them just now. The rep also said that this issue is in the engineering queue and a future software update should resolve it, but there was not a commitment to when that would be.

I had this exact problem.

I found a solution without having to delete all my passwords.

Solution:

I visited appleid.apple.com on a non-Apple device (using Chrome) and it worked first time.

I tried several different browsers on my iPhone and MacBook but kept getting the same message:

“Continue on one of your devices. On an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch go to Settings > Apple ID. On a Mac go to System Preferences or System Settings > Apple ID”

So I’m assuming this is an Apple glitch.
