iPhone overheating when using GPS while charging

I've been using Navigation software on my iPhone Xs for many years (not CarPlay) and because this drains the battery "somewhat", I have it on charging, while driving in my car.

This worked fine until a couple of months ago: the iPhone crashes while using the navigation software (doesn't matter which one: google maps/Sygic/Apple). Normally I have it in a holder on the front windscreen.

Fortunately I was able to hang the phone in front of the airco outlet of the car, which kept it a lot cooler (but still warm), but it wouldn't charge. Also, my wife has the same type of iPhone and has the same issue.

I really think it is related to the latest IOS verion (v16.*).

Can this be fixed by Apple please!?

Yep. I had this issue today.

iPhone XS Max. 60% battery and sitting in dash mounted wireless charging cradle getting power.

Used Apple Maps for the first time to navigate ( normally I use NAVIGON ) and maybe that was the mistake.

All worked fine until the last 10% of the trip, which was unfortunate , as that was when I was in a new area and really needed the navigation system as I exited the highway. First there was a significant lag, where my position in Apple Maps was 1/4 mile behind where the car was, so I drove past the intersection I should have turned at and then while down the road a bit then maps location got to the intersection I’d already past telling me to turn there. Nice job apple. Ok no problem I’ll turn at the next intersection and work my way in that direction. Apple Maps started to recalculate but I saw it was still a good bit behind where I actually was. And as I drove up the side road a mile suddenly Apple Maps just went up and crashed to the main phone screen.

so now I’m pulling over and trying to relaunch Apple Maps. It comes up , nope it crashed again. The car was fine , ac was on and around Seattle so an 80 deg day ain’t that harsh. So I waited a while holding the phone in front of the ac vent directly assuming the wireless charging and the sun hitting the back of the phone via the windshield was overheating it - what else to try. If the device was overheating I’d expect the phone to shut down not just the Apple Maps app to stop working.

a few tries and finally Apple Maps loads and stays up and I can again route to my destination. About 2 miles away.

i don’t think it was temp related unless the gps system would be influenced by the wireless charger heating the battery and phone providing some so wonky data to Apple Maps causing the app to lose its mind and shut down.

lesson learned I think is don’t rely on Apple Maps to get you to a destination. I’ll stick to NAVIGON. Granted an anecdotal failure isn’t proof of anything but this basic stuff needs to be nullet proof.

My experience says this is purely caused by some third-party app that you may have installed.

I am not aware of the ambient temperature in which you are using the iPhone. However --> Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable ...

Store the device where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures. Using an iOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.

Nope, no 3rd party apps. I have seen your answer on similar issues before.

And I disagree with the ambient temperature being the cause: I never had this in the past in same conditions (even when used full in the sun, during summer and on loader; OK, the phone was somewhat warm, but worked. But now, just running the GPS software (any for that matter), it's running warm and that even without charging.

This issue I have is since a couple of months. Not exactly sure when exactly, since I haven't navigated often since end of May, so somewhere there abouts.
