Apple Wallet opens uninvited at the gym, over and over

For some reason Apple Wallet opens when I'm in the gym. I'm listening to the podcast app but not handling the phone AT ALL. Again, it opens absolutely unbidden. If I close it, it opens right back up. Interestingly only the financial apps appear; none of my membership apps are there (even for the gym). It makes me wonder if I'm being hacked. In fact, not only does the Wallet open but it immediately displays the command to double-click to make a purchase. There's no way to close the Wallet except to turn the phone off.

Double-clicking the side (or home) button triggers the Wallet app to open. You may stop this behavior when the iPhone is locked by setting:

Settings > [Touch/Face] ID & Passcode > [Allow Access When Locked] Wallet = “off”.

The Wallet will open any time it is near (less than an inch) from an NFC device. So your treadmill has an NFC connection on its control panel, and if your phone comes within an inch of the NFC device the Wallet will open.

No, but on a hunch go to Settings/Wallet & Apple Pay and turn off Double-Click.

The Wallet will open when you are near a terminal that has an NFC beacon. “Near” means within a few inches.

If you feel an unauthorized person/app is remotely using, controlling or monitoring your device, then that is possible only if you have done one or more of the following Don'ts...

Don't hand over an iPhone to kids or to a stranger without Enabling Guided Access
Don't share Apple IDs
Don't Jailbreak
Don't share sensitive information pertaining to your device
Don't give in to Phishing
Don't plug in your device in Airports and Public places through third-party cables and trust the device. Beware of Juice Jacking. (Especially in India)
Don't leave your iPhone unlocked and unattended in public places like offices, schools, malls, etc.

If one of the above is true then quickly change the Apple ID Password and Return iPhone settings to their defaults.

It’s NFC that opens the wallet, not Bluetooth.

Have you tried simply closing the app by swiping up from the bottom of the screen?

Yes - it just opens again. I have a feeling Lawrence Finch has the answer (above) because the treadmills do have the capacity to connect to your device.

That doesn't mean it should open the Wallet of course and prompt me to pay for something 🙄

Yes. It's odd but when I swipe up the app doesn't appear so I can't close it. It's just sitting there open (if that makes sense).

I think it's probably trying to talk to the treadmill so I'll make sure the Bluetooth is disconnected next time I go. Still makes no sense that it opens the Wallet though. Has no business there!

Happens to me as well at the gym, listening to Bluetooth music on treadmill every now and then apple wallet randomly opens up asking me to double click to pay, I turned off the default double click and it still happens, I reported it in case there’s some sort of skimming device planted on the treadmill? I am tempted to double click to see who charges me!
