M2 MacBook Pro screen crack for no apparent reason

Similar to M1 MacBook Air screen cracking reports during normal use or overnight, without any apparent reason, my MacBook M2 pro screen suffered same. My mac is not even completely one year old, it was working perfectly before I went to sleep last night and when I woke up there was a crack on left side of the mac, after a few hours when I saw it again the crack became bigger and the whole display was black, before it was atleast working half side normally but then it wasn’t at all. I closed it properly, I did not damage it I’m any ways, it didn’t move the whole night. The mac from outside shows no damages on the screen but when switched on the screen display shows white lines and black screen. This had a already happened with over 3600 users and discussions have taken place in “MacBook air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason”, same has happened with me but now I’m M2 and MacBook Pro. The images attached below shows the spread of the crack. I can say with 100% confidence that it has not been physically damaged.

got an m2 MacBook Pro 2022 , the bottom part of the screen just cracked like couple hours ago , no reason (it didn't fall or anything ) , the funny part is I was working and could see cracks forming in-front of my eyes , I mean just bought it couple of months ago , light use only , I mean it this common ??

My 15" MBP is 1715 days old (or young) and that is my first Mac. Sure, I'd buy an ARM chip MacBook someday in the future, after everything settles down.


Since I bought one of these laptops just before Christmas, I now know that I could be taking a risk to treat it like a portable computer that can sustain a few bumps and falls

Whatever the laptop, you must be careful with it, no bumps, and no falls. And, no pressure when closing the lid. Also, not to put anything between the keyboard and the screen. Anyway, I'm sure you'd enjoy your new MacBook. Good Luck!

That's not how it works. They refuse to cover it under normal warranty because they claim any internal crack of the screen is basically your fault. They assume it was created by something external. I also was treated as a liar (like other people here) against what really happened and even showing pictures of the original cracks (the technician acknowledged that the explanation he gave me was not applicable to one of the cracks that appeared originally but that in any case apple would not cover this repair because they would not acknowledge internal cracks as their own fault. I was asked for more than 800€ to repair it. They would cover the repair (not sure if in full or to some extent) just if you bought the additional AppleCare+.

Now if I go to the genius bar and they tell me this is my fault for touching the screen, then for me, that will be like a car manufacturer telling me its my fault for driving a new car if it breaks down after a month of purchasing. These are tactile objects that are subject to force, especially tactile force (within reason) and if those p r i c k s tell me that it is my fault for having touched my screen well I am going to ask them to cut off my hands give me another laptop. What a joke apple has become. I've given them 4k in the past 8 years for two faulty laptops, and I am venting my anger from my 2012 macbook which is still a beast (thank you steve jobs and you would be rolling in your grave seeing what they have done to your company)

For what I have seen and experienced, I would be expecting that they tell you that there was an impact with a small object left there when closing the lid. In any case, I was said that, no matter what really happened, they do not consider the presence of internal cracks suitable to be acknowledged as within the warranty terms. Basically, if you have an internal crack, for them the damage is always caused by something external and therefore you are asked to pay to have it repaired.


In any case, let us know what do they tell you at the official technical support. I hope your case is different and that you get it repaired under warranty terms.

Have you noticed that MacBook screen has a slightly jutting out border that keeps the screen away from the bottom part of the MacBook and that the keyboard is slightly sunken from the surface, that the screen actually doesn't touch anything when the MacBook is closed? Also, that the MacBook screen panel can be closed with one finger without any pressure? And, that the top screen panel is made of quite tough aluminium, which is not that easy to bend as plastic panels?

That's exactly the primary reason why I have been using Mac for the past 20 years (I mean the durability) but this issue and the way they are (not) handling it, and the blaming... is just too much. In my opinion I would not risk it if they do not solve this and you are sure they provide you with the solid product you pay (abundantly) for. If you go for it I hope you do not join us in the "unlucky ones club". Even if you buy apple care, if this happens you still have to pay something for a problem you did not create, whereas a flawed screen should be covered by normal warranty, in my opinion. When it comes to me, after the experience, if they do not acknowledge the problem as they have done with other issues, this is it with Apple.

That's exactly what I did. They blamed the crack on me and slapped a price tag of $699 plus tax for the replacement, making it almost $800. You could get a fancy laptop for that amount in BB, throw in a snazzy Linux, and watch it zoom past the latest OS on M2s like it's in a turbocharged comedy race.

Sure, they are. They treated me like I'd insulted their sacred Apple pie when I dared to question the screen quality. I argued that the screen was weaker than a soggy noodle compared to my previous model. The selfie-awere clerk in Burlingame genius bar looked at me as if I'd just insulted the intelligence of Siri. Maybe he thought, 'Here's another technologically-challenged relic,' or at least, that's what I imagined. Little did he know, I've been an Apple user since the days of Apple mono-colored laptops. I was coding Apple software on CodeWarrior back in the '90s when he was probably still figuring out how to tie his shoelaces. And oh, the support during the 'Power Mac' days during Jobs was ousted—it was a comedy of errors, much like the current situation.

After this, I'm pretty sure the Good Ol' Apple days are on permanent vacation with Jobs. RIP Steve, the Apple charm just got replaced by the sound of crickets in tech support.

Exactly the same thing happened to mine, two weeks after Apple care warranty expired. I spent two weeks arguing with Apple to no avail.

I have used Mac from the very first machine, 40+ years; owned almost every variant of the macbook; their quality has decreased in direct inverse proportion to their greed as a company.

I need another laptop but I cannot bring myself to go through the financial pain of paying £2000 for 12 months use.

This is exactly what has happened to me AFTER the update. My iPhone is now blacking out and my screen is dying exactly how everyone is describing.

And for people who say just return it.... I bought it in the UK for an English keyboard but do not live there PLUS my livelihood depends on my using it and my iPhone not just everyday but the Whole day.

I am not an influencer but all my business comes from social media. I have to be on it.

I thought I was buying an investment but have never ever had this happen before. It is not even six months old and is treated like gold dust. Never left the table.

It cost a lot of money for me and I can't afford to not have a computer for several days.

I will NEVER buy apple products again. I now need to upgrade my iPhone 13 due to all the memory problems since this upgrade but will look at Samsung instead. And had just bought the expensive earplugs which will probably only work with apple....

This is a complete disaster for me.

This means that more flex and torque pressure are transferred from the frame to the screen, making it more likely to crack when opening or shutting the laptop, the suit said, citing expert witness David Niebuhr, who has a doctorate in engineering and runs his own firm.


This analysis by Niebuhr "coupled with the alleged widespread occurrence of display issues" sufficiently alleges the existence of a defect, the judge said."

So this has happened to me today. My 3 month old M1 macbook pro 14 inch's screen randomly cracked after i came from dinner and i still cannot figure out why. I am coming up with possibilities that maybe there must be some food item left while closing the screen but after seeing this thread i don't think so. I have been using Macbook Air 2017 then macbook pro 13 inch and never faced this issue. I did not drop it and no such accident happened. There seems so be a design or a software flaw in the new macbooks.

I have the same problem. Only my entire screen is now affected with colored noise - unusable - sitting in a drawer since July 2023. Took it to the store and was told it would cost $399 to repair (Applecare deductible). Problem is it's a design flaw so it will only happen again. Class Action lawsuit settled by Apple last year for the same problem with M1. Been working with Apple to replace the Mac. Called customer service -they referred to sales who told me I have go through Applecare. I have a paper trail (reported it in April 2023 - a month after I received it).

Well I'm here because I bought an Apple MacBook Pro M3 14 inch laptop Nov 4th of 2023 and it quit charging about January 4, 2023. Luckily it was still under complete warranty of bring it back anytime before January 13 from Best Buy and they gave me a brand new one. Then six weeks later like a week or so ago I'm over getting my taxes done and I've been watching some videos of some football replays and it came my turn to get my taxes done at this tax clinic and the guy was taking quite a while so I was just going to open my laptop up and check something and my screen was completely black wouldn't come on. I called Apple care they said it should be under the hardware warranty but you might wanna take it to Best Buy since you don't have an Apple Store in your city and it's 200 miles away to see what they will do. They probably will mail it in for you.


So I took it to Best Buy. They said the condition was new and sent it in. Sure enough as everyone else's talked in the community, then I get a call saying I've got to pay $99, because there's an internal crack that's not visible externally, but something must've happened externally that causes internal crack. Well, I think it's nice that they've made it so you can have more than two type repairs (if I understand what is being said in this thread) of these if it happens again, but it is a little unsettling and worrisome that as far as I know, had never dropped this device or done anything to it to cause stress on the screen, other than clean the screen with a screen cleaner. wipe. I too will have to get more cautious abount my next device if this continues to be a problem or if this starts happening repeatedly!


However, and I really probably would prefer to be on windows. Sorry for those of you or die hard apple folks, but I can't find anything that gives me the battery life that these M chips give and they run cool all the time or at least mine have. I have a refurbished MacBook Air M1 and it gives me 18 hours frequently and the MacBook Pro M3 mentioned above I often get 15 out of it. All I'm really looking for is something that will give me seven or eight hours during the workday, but I can't find anything any kind of i7 windows that will come anywhere near that. Plus I have 18 GB of unified memory which they've convinced me is essentially the same as ram and I can't get anything for the price that I got this MacBook Pro M3 from Best Buy for on sale around Christmas. Anyway, I appreciate the forum, and may the consumers of Apple unite!
