iPhone mail only working on cellular, not wifi.

iPhone email only works on cellular, not WiFi. My iPad with the same email details works fine on the same WiFi network. I've tried this on 3 different networks with the same result?

This only started happening a month ago. I've had no problems for over a year prior. No settings in the mail app have been changed. They are all the same as the iPad.

Hi seunghee97,

I ended up going to the Apple store and they were familiar with the issue.

There was a VPN on my phone that was enabled. (Oddly I never had installed one?)

But that was the issue. As soon as they uninstalled it, problem gone.

If you have a VPN on your phone get rid of it and see what happens.

Connecting to Wi-Fi is the initial step, followed by establishing an internet connection.

However, it's important to note that connecting to Wi-Fi does not automatically guarantee an internet connection. In the event that you are unable to connect to Wi-Fi, the issue may stem from settings on your iPhone or the router/modem.

On the other hand, if you are unable to establish an internet connection despite being connected to Wi-Fi, the problem is likely related to the settings on your router/modem. In such cases, it is advisable to promptly contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance.

Check your WiFi Router / Modem for --> Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points ...

For your Internet connection.

  • Over Cellular: contact your Carrier (Cellular Service Provider). The agency that issued the SIM to you
  • Over WiFI: Contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider), the agency that provided the Internet Service on your Modem/Router to you

However --> Connect iPhone to the Internet - Apple Support

I have the same problem. On any WiFi my iPhone does not receive email but iPad mini does.

To be clear so no one responds in an uninformed manner: Both iPhone and iPad mini can surf the web but while connected to WiFi and surfing the web the iPhone cannot receive email. Both use Apple Mail.

I also have Synology Mail plus Client on both devices. Same problem.

Any laptop or desktop Mac OS or Windows computers connected to same WiFi have no problem receiving email.

This points to a communication protocol problem in this regards to the iPhone IOS not the iPad IOS. Two different IOS devices on same network with different behaviors.

FYI: No VPN service is running. Checked.

So Apple what is going on? How to resolve as it is not right that I need to disconnect from WiFi to get email

UPDATE: our network is controlled by a Cisco 5508 WLC with 3600 APs. I wanted to rule out all the Apple protocols and various network settings required to get Apple devices to work on an enterprise network.

So I grabbed an AirPort Extreme and set it up on the network with WPA2 Enterprise so I am checking apples to apples - no pun intended.

All testing revealed the same email problem. iPhone will not get email on the Apple Extreme but the iPad Mini or laptop are fine either on WiFi or Cellular

So this is definitely a problem with iPhone IOS

Outlook did an update yesterday which changed all my email server info in Outlook on my computers!

Coincidence or not, at the same time my emails suddenly stopped working on my iphone when using wifi, but still send/receive if I switch to cellular. I've also tried 3 different wifi conections (ISPs) at home, work etc and still get the problem. No VPN running.

Worked fine up until the Outlook update. Seems to be a server issue as I get the checking mail.... for ages and then the can'r connect to server error message.

Outlook....Apple....Email provider....and so on....Everyone is blaming each other and no one will take responsibility and no one knows how to fix it!

UPDATE:

Latest Apple Mobile Device testing

  • Synology latest MailPlus Server and MailPlus update has enabled email functionality using their web interface or smart device application no matter internet source (WiFi - Cellular)
  • Email send/receive/update fails using Apple Mail for either GoDaddy or Synology Mail accounts unless I use Cellular.

Verified functionality on:

  • MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac where email works using WiFi or wired
  • Multiple iPhone 13 Pro (17.5.1) and multiple iPodMini4 (15.8.2) running latest IOS where email fails using WiFi but works using cellular network

That seems to be a generic type of answer. If you've read what I have said I don't understand why you would reply with that? No offence intended, but I have made it clear my iPad sitting right next to my phone works perfectly on the same networks.

Today I deleted the account on the phone and added it again...same result. The phone will only work on cellular even though the iPad works perfectly. The phone also works perfectly over the same 3 networks for everything except email. It did for 2 years prior too.

I’m also having the same issue with e-mail not working over wi-fi. It works fine with cellular data. Internet works fine as I can browse through any sites…the problem is with sending and receiving emails with a custom domain name.

Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail all work fine. It’s so strange.

I even went out of my way to change the router and modem to make sure my IP address was not blacklisted.

Can anyone help?
