After iOS 17.2.1 the whole notifications cocktail involving the iPhone and Apple Watch is a complete disaster, utter shambles. I receive an SMS yet I get NO notification sound AT ALL on either the phone or the watch and no visible indication that I have received an SMS either, nothing, I literally have no idea I have received a message unless I open the app! Nothing on the watch and nothing / no badge on the phone. Yet I can open up Messages on the watch or the phone and can see them all sat there, unread. What's the point of having these insanely expensive devices if they can't even perform the most basic phone functions? This will be the last Apple purchase for me. Sure Android has its problems but Apple is total shambles at the moment! I get the feeling Apple is trying to be way more clever than it actually is, trying to link and mirror too many things and when the wheel comes off it comes off big time, and takes way to long to put back on!!!
Running 17.0.3 on 15pro max and Apple did not fix notifications. I still can’t use bought tones. I’ve reset and put phone to factory settings and nothing. I have spoken to tech support and there was no fix. Apple please fix
In messages click on top under contact as if you are going to look for shared pictures. There you will find "Hide Alerts" - make sure its turned off - if its green, switch it off. It has to be "grey". Button to the left.
I had the same issue and this fixed it.
Since the IOS17 update my notification sounds disappeared. I went into the apple store today only to find out that if I want notification sounds then I must have the banners enabled in order for the notification sounds to work.
This is extremely frustrating because since my first Iphone (Iphone 4) my banners have always been disabled due to privacy and I never had any issues getting only the sound notifications up until now.
I hope apple fixes this back to how it was specially for privacy due to reasons.
Wife and I both aren't receiving notifications vibrations or tones when using our phones for FB, TT, or general web surfing. We have to close the window to check the icons for any msgs. Also ringtone set to full, yet after a call, it goes to half way. Very annoying.
After latest update still not working right. Have to have a banner - really irritating as it pops down all the time. Can only use classic tones and not ones I would like to.
This has gone on too long. It’s really frustrating 🥲
Is anyone else experiencing the Update Contact Name when someone already in your contacts texts you? No matter how many times I X it out, it comes back every time. If I wanted to update their name, I would.
Would be nice if Apple would stop trying to force things on us.
Just did the 17.0.3 update, and still no screen wake or sound when using my watch. I do get a tap, but watch screen does not show message. Unlike some, when the watch is off my wrist, the phone screen does wake, show the message, and make the sound.
Hi I’m not sure if you’ve solved this. This happened to me as well after I got the new 15. If you have an Apple Watch, turns out you can no longer get dual notifications on both your watch and phone. So you have to turn off the message notifications on your watch or you will only get them on your watch. Another workaround is disconnecting Bluetooth but that means you won’t have access to AirPlay, airdrop, etc. Hope this helps.
If this is so, and I don't doubt it, there needs to be a way to override this behaviour. By the way, I had my watch on mute, so only a tap and screen notification comes. I just realized with mute disabled, I still only get the tap now. Not good, since the phone does nothing on a message notification. Taps are not always enough.
I normally have the ear icon active. Mute might not be the right term, but I mainly used that because I didn't need it to ring along with the phone. Yes, I get both a tap and a visual for the text on the watch while in mute/silent.

I had no sound for any contact except for my girlfriend. She was the only one that I had no notification on my watch since iOS 17. According to the posts above, I tried to delete the sound associated to the contact of my girlfriend and it works. Give it a try!
This has been a problem since upgrading to iOS 17 but I have finally resolved it. You have to have at least one of the three banner option selected for the sound notification to work. In previous iOS versions this was not the case
I too have all the banners. I just realized that with Airpods in use, I get the announcement, but nothing happens on the watch or phone. I like the audible announcement, so I don't want to have to defeat it just to get the other to work. There should have been another option to announce AND display/ play alert. Or they could just put it back to the way it was.
Passing along what worked for me, as this issue was driving me crazy for weeks, changing every imaginable setting, resetting, etc.
I signed out of Messages on every other device. Not just turned off message forwarding — actually signed out from my laptops and iPad.
For me it did not matter if I wasn't using the device to send/receive messages — because the devices were not showing messages being received and I have never sent a message using anything but my phone.
So give it a try — make sure no other Apple device is using your Messages account.
