Go to settings, go to notifications, go to Messages. Now make sure you have one of these selected. Mine was grey and didn’t have one selected. When I chose Notification Center my sound came back! 😎✌🏼

I think you're onto something. I had notification problems too, but overnight they resolved themselves, and I have banners, notifications and lock screen selected on everything. Now these notifications are quite robust. I wonder if the culprit behind the notification dysfunction was focus. The singular change I made was in scheduling, and turned on a setting that will automatically put watch and phone into sleep mode during sleep schedule. Their screens go black, and notifications are silenced during this time.

Preceding this, for the past three days, focus was going in and out of do not disturb mode, and doing it by itself. This recent publication related to focus in iOS 17 was very helpful: Set up a Focus on iPhone - Apple Support

Chatted with Apple and they act like they don’t know what is going on? I told them the default notification sound was to low and you can’t change it or make it louder and they wanted me to reset my phone. I said I know people that already did and it didn’t work. I don’t understand why they don’t want us to have control of 3rd party apps? So long story short they are no help and 100% they don’t care about the feedback.

I have been texting with Apple this morning. They do not get it. They tell me to push the volume up button then the down button hold the power off button. Nothing fixed. Go to settings and toggle the notification button back and forth. Then this person wanted me to remove my screen saver my case and clean out the volume button. Hello my phone has sound I just don’t have my individual message tones for my apps!!!!!🤬 I told the person obviously you are not listening! Bye bye and have a good day🙄

All notification Sounds are only sounding on my watch.

If I’m using the phone , the notification sound will sound on the phone. If screen is black the notification sound is on my watch. I have banners , notifications center and lock screen checked! I have updated to ios17.0.3

I also have an iPad and notifications sounds have been normal on that!

Phone does ring when I have a call even on black screen!

it seems that Apple changed how stuff works as noted on attached website.

The notification sounds are about 75% quieter than phone call ringing. Why the volume level is separate now is beyond me… but it should have a separate volume control. If anything I’d flip that setting but prefer it all being level.

also, even with the new apple alert tones, some text messages and sounds just don’t come through when the phone is locked.

HOWEVER - they work fine if im using my phone. Which is useless because I don’t need the sound when a banner is flashing in front of my face but I do need it when I’m not holding the phone.

How did such an issue get rolled out in a major update? I’d rather you ship late than ship so buggy.

Since the iOS17 rollout I am only able to hear text alerts if Message Notification Alerts in Lock Screen, Notification Center, or Banners is selected. This was not the case with older iOS software. I truly hope Apple reverts the functionality of message notifications because the new requirement compromises users' privacy and security.

I have tried the solutions that other people have offered on this site. Unfortunately, none of these solutions have been proven to be effective. I, along with many other people are still not receiving the notifications on our iPhones.

I have spent three hours on the phone with Apple Support and it is my impression that they are being told NOT to admit that this is a problem. Why do I say this.... it is because they are going through the motions of trying to fix the problem that we are having, but now after almost a month, the problem remains.

We all know that Apple is a company that is on the forefront of technology, but what comes before technology is sales, and that is where their focus is.

In my experience, it is better to have happy customers who are enjoying their Apple product rather than unhappy customers who have spent a lot of money for their phone and then not get to use it to its fullest capability.

I believe that if there is someone who can contact a technology reporter/writer and have them report on this issue, then there will be a fix. Otherwise I think that it is going to be a long and ultimately futile process. I would already have switched to a Samsung product if I had not just purchased a new phone three months ago. I am stuck until this is paid off.

I welcome all suggestions in trying to fix this problem, and hopefully someone will stumble onto a universal solution. Thank you everyone for your help!

How is it that no one at Apple tested this and it's not fixed yet? I had my text message sounds set to "none" for everyone except for a very few people. The same people who I allow to alert me while in Do Not Disturb mode. I no longer get notified when they those people text - ever. Do Not Disturb was suggested to use but it doesn't work and even if it did work, I do not want to be in Do Not Disturb mode all day as a work around. This is all since the upgrade to iOS 17.0.3. This is only one issue with the upgrade but seems I am not alone.

Hello ~ Apple didn’t ask my opinion before making this change either and I am not thrilled with it myself. I am a fellow forum member like yourself not Apple Support. I personally am waiting for this to be addressed by Apple…the only ones that can make a change. I encourage you to reach out to Apple and leave your feedback…

Resetting all setting and removed all apps, no disturb mode is on, all notifications is turned on, nothing helped, contacted with apple technical support also he cant do anything. Hopefully thats issue will be resolved in the next update soon because its very unpleasant and disturbing.
