Go to settings, go to notifications, go to Messages. Now make sure you have one of these selected. Mine was grey and didn’t have one selected. When I chose Notification Center my sound came back! 😎✌🏼
Finally solved this for my Mom!!! After checking ALL the settings, she still had this issue.
Make sure that you don't have Hide Alerts turned on for the person/conversation. In Messages on ur phone, long-press on the conversation (from the "Messages" screen) and look for Show Alerts. If you see it, select it to show alerts. If you see Hide Alerts instead, then you're good just leave it as-is because you don't want to hide their alerts.
For some reason I wasn't receiving notifications on Messages from my Mom and vice versa. Neither of us recalls intentionally hiding alerts from each other. However, this was the culprit. I hope this helps someone. May you be in peace ❤️

After the Gmail app updated to newest version, and also after turning off my iPhone (first) and Apple Watch and turning back on, I can happily report I am getting my Gmail notifications. Thank goodness!! It has been two days now, and I am STILL receiving them! Hooray!!!
I purchased an Apple Watch in December. I just tried turning the watch off as Damianfromvancouver suggested, and Messaging works normally. When I turned the watch back on, my iPhone 13 Pro Max iOS 17.3 will not display or sound or show alerts on the Lock Screen. I've never had this issue before I added the Apple Watch Utra 2 to the mix.
The only way I have gotten my iPhone 13 Pro Max to resume normal Messaging is to turn off the watch. Bluetooth has no effect with messaging in my situation. There are so many people with this same question... (Google Search has About 834,000,000 results (0.39 seconds). I think there are about the same amount of suggestions on how to fix the problem, but nothing has worked for me except for turning off the Watch.
Nope. I had all three options. Nothing.
went to just what your screenshot showed. Nope.
works when my watch isn’t nearby though
17.02 did not help. To fix it I had to select banner or stack list to have a tone. I am unable to use the bought ring tones from Apple.
I turned my iPhone 14 Pro Max off and back on, now it's working. I have the 13 Pro Max as well I didn't experience this issue.
It was really frustrating for me in WhatsApp and for the other apps, but after resetting the Network Setting, all resolved. Do a try.
Thank you for this! I changed the text tone to a classic ringtone and it now works.
I had to change settings on all apps that I want alerts from to allow them to post either as a banner, on Lock Screen, or in notifications. Try that. I was losing my mind today.
I found if you turn on Focus and set it to allow the apps you want to get notifications from on the lock screen. that's probably the best and easiest work around for this problems.
You need to use Apple provided alert tones, or possibly tones bought as "Alert Tones" from iTunes store. . Ringtones will only work as ringtones for phone calls in iOS17.
Possibly third party apps have not updated their tones to the new format required by iOS17
Thanks for reporting a bug.
I got alert sound back for text messages (iMessage) after switching alert banner on for the lock screen. This is not how alert sounds should work. The setting I have now will consume more energy as it activates the display for each and every notification. Multiply that by hundreds of milions of devices across the globe and ... It is not good at all.
If it's also true that Apple do not allow me to take sounds from my home studio and use them as alert sounds anymore, how bad? What's the gain by adding such a limitation?
It should be nice and fun to personalize your phone a little.
I found a temporary solution til Apple fixes this as I like my privacy as well. I went to notifications and turned off show preview, scheduled summary and screen sharing. Then I went to Message and only turned on alerts for Notification Center and Badges. The sound came back when I got a text message and the only way anyone can see who sent it if I gave them my phone is to drag down from the top. And if you’ve already opened the text, that notification wouldn’t be there anyhow! Hope this helps
I have updated to IOS 17.0.2 last night and turned of show notification in notification center to check if there was a fix; it no work! For those who want their sound alerts back, go to settings and in the notifications choose that app. and select show in notification center. Be wise in what you want to be shown on locked screen. This is a work around, not a fix! P.S. I hope you folks are writing to apple with your feedback at apple.com/feedback please report this as a bug on that page
