Go to settings, go to notifications, go to Messages. Now make sure you have one of these selected. Mine was grey and didn’t have one selected. When I chose Notification Center my sound came back! 😎✌🏼

Well I think I figured it out. And see if this applies to you:

Apple has removed the privacy of receiving messages on a locked screen. The only time I can hear or feel an incoming iMessage or Facebook messenger msg is if I choose to have the notification appear on my locked screen. Now I work for a railroad and work in an office where my phone must stay if I have to go into the yard. Why must I have to constantly change settings on my phone if I want things to remain private? This is a stupid thing to change or MISS since this only started occurring with iOS 17.

After updating my phone to the newest IOS 17, when I get messages from someone it doesn't tell me who texted me. Instead when I get a message it just says notification so, I tried switching my settings hoping it would resolve the issue but it didn't. I called apple about the issue, but they weren't able to give me an answer as to why this is happening. Before the update, when I got messages they'd appear on my lock screen and it would say, for example, "Mom" letting me know I got a text from that person. Even when my phone is unlocked and the banner pops down it doesn't give me the persons name.

Go to Settings>Notifications>Messages and set "Show Previews" to "Always".

After iOS 17.2.1 the whole notifications cocktail involving the iPhone and Apple Watch is a complete disaster, utter shambles. I receive an SMS yet I get NO notification sound AT ALL on either the phone or the watch and no visible indication that I have received an SMS either, nothing, I literally have no idea I have received a message unless I open the app!

That sounds as if you may have Focus enabled.

This will be the last Apple purchase for me.

You should always buy whatever tool best meets your needs. No one here in this user-to-user forum has any vested interest in what you choose.

Thanks for this info about the iwatch taking precedence over the phone.

why Apple thought this was a good idea is beyond me.

it should be OUR choice where we want sound not theirs.

bad show Apple

I did find a site that explains it and gives a work around. But the work around comes at the expense of lots of other stuff not working which they explain in the article . Come on Apple gives us the choice of sound on watch or phone or both.

I have contacted Apple because I had the same issue on my iPhone 14 pro. They could only fix it by selecting banners, notification center, or lock screen. I kept telling the operator that I don't want that option. I only want the incoming sound like before. The selection of the three options lets the message appear which makes my privacy go away. I don't want anyone see my incoming messages from texts or any other forum. Apple still has no idea how to fix this.

That's how it is for me. Newly after installing iOS 17, with watchOS 10 installed, regardless of other settings, it is only by setting in the Watch app "Notifications > Custom > Notifications Off" for Mail and Messages, that those apps' notifications sounds play on my phone while it is locked, but at the expense of them ever playing on my watch.

Previously it all worked perfectly: all apps played a sound on both devices, regardless of lock screen state, when they were set to play a notification sound on both devices.
