iOS 17.0 Apple Remote on iPhone no longer works

I have restarted my iPhone, restarted Apple TV, but now that I upgraded to iOS 17.0 The Apple Remote feature from iPhone no longer works. It has worked just fine for years, but now it does not.

Yes, I did upgrade to iOS 17.0 that's when it stopped working. I don't have a physical remote (damaged) and can't put my Apple TV on wi-fi (because I don't have a remote), so it only has ethernet connection. So no way to use my Apple TV.

Same for me. After I upgraded to iOS 17.0.1 on my iphone 14 pro and tvOS17 on my apple TV I can not connect the remote control app on my iphone to apple TV. In the control center there is an other control whitch is working, I can see the currently playing program. The problem only exist if the apple TV connected to the network with ethernet cable. If I unpluge the cable and connect it with wifi everithing is working fine. So I think this is a bug in iOS 17 or tvOS 17

I’m glad there’s a workaround, but the idea that it’s a network problem is nonsense. This was working with iOS 16 with the exact same network configuration. I’ve also confirmed that my WiFi is connected directly, without any firewall rules, to my default LAN network. In fact, the remote app can see the Apple TV, it just cannot connect to it once you select the name. So, mdns discovery may be broken, or just AirPlay, but either way, it is a change in Apple software, and not an inherent issue of our networks.

Since I have changed the setting it is working. The apple remote in system center recognizes instantly without searching. And also apple tv in home doesn’t give not responding as hub so far.

Other thing which could probably also be related which I had to change on the asus router before. I had disabled igpm snooping in the professional setting for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz. That gave me chromecast functionality for nvidia shield back.

A good program for troubleshooting is discovery. It shows all mdns entries. When i have seen there the apple tv showing up as airplay target and proxy, has worked also in the remote app and on home app.

There is an other standard control in the control center on my Iphone. This is belogs to the Apple Home I think. This control is working now, with ethernet. I can see the currently playing program, I can pause/start or skip backward or forward 10sec and there is a slider to jump anywhere in the program. But the remote control doesn't work. It says unable to connect to TV... Something changed in tvOS 17, because both control worked in the previous release with ethernet, I am sure.

I to have the same issue, my ATV remote in the control centre continuously searches with both my i15P and ATV on the same WiFi network. I have also updated both devices to the latest iOS & tvOS, 17.1 thinking that would solve the issue but it has not. Both devices have been restarted as well. I have not gone the route of resetting devices as that would be such a pain re configure everything. I think it’s a bug in the new software update as the ATV is discoverable when wanting to cast video. Hope a fix comes soon.

I don't have a physical remote (damaged) …

Users that lost their remote or have fatally damaged their remote, can buy a replacement remote.

  1. You may be able to temporarily borrow a Siri Remote to help set up the Wi-Fi network connection.
  2. Or, you should be able to configure your router to see the wired and wireless as one logical network. Then the software remote should be straight-forward to connect with the Apple TV box. (You would still need a functional physical remote if you want to switch to Wi-Fi though, as the software remote loses communication as soon as ethernet disconnects.)

Yes, this is my mistake. In my first post I wrote app, but I meant control. I always used the remote control in the control center. I didn't know there was a remote control application. Thank you for the clarification.

Sorry, just trying to be precise. But, based on the subsequent post, something has changed and it doesn't seem to work if the ATV is plugged into an ethernet cable.
