To start with: I'm not intending to say that the cause of this problem is due this or this. I only want the iOS users where I work to be able to print the way they was able before 17 and to know what has caused the problem not how to "make it to away".
I have read the 5 step "turn it off and on again solution" and I have read that it seem to work on some devices in some networks.
When a solution to a problem is to "turn it off and on" the problem is doomed to come back until the actual cause is fixed. This might work in a SOHO environment but not in larger organisations where the device count on both iOS/IpadOS devices and printers it counted in hundreds or thousands.
I wan't to add one thing that I've made in a quest to find what's the cause of this.
We have thousands of client devices and >1000 iPads in the organization where I work and we immediately blocked upgrade to iOS/iPadOS 17 when we understood that AirPrint stopped working after upgrading to 17.x.
I have tried to get iPads back to 16 but so far the only model that I could do it with has been with iPad gen 6.
Result: AirPrint worked like before when they did run on 16. Nothing was done on printers (server handled, not SOHO devices), router (large firewall), DNS'es or any other parts of the network. Just downgraded the devices to 16.
I just did the following on one iPad 6 gen:
Running on 16.7.2: AirPrint printers visible.
Restore from 16.7.2 to 17.1 via DFU - result: No AirPrint printers visible.
Restore from 17.1 to 16.7.2 via DFU - result: AirPrint printers visible.
Restore from 16.7.2 to 17.1 via DFU - result: No AirPrint printers visible.
Restore from 17.1 to 16.7.2 via DFU - result: AirPrint printers visible.
No other changes in the network environment was made.
How many times shall this be performed back and forth to get statistics if AirPrint works or not until this is seen as something that was introduced / changed (maybe not a real bug) in 17 since the problem isn't in 16.7.2 but in 17.x.?
As I wrote in the beginning I'm not on a quest to whine about this or that. I just wan't my users to be able to use AirPrint as before 17.x
This is what finally worked for me. I had tried so many other work arounds. I never had a problem with Sonoma, just iOS and iPadOS 17. My iMac is hardwired to the network so maybe that's why it always worked.
Anyway, thanks!
Not helping, requires you have control over all devices involved, which only applies to a home network, not a business environment. Got any other suggestions? (I've also tried disabling the private wifi address option).
This does not seem to be an isolated problem for a few users.
Even enterprise solutions have this issue after that their iOS clients have upgraded to iOS 17 for example this:
https://www.papercut.com/kb/Main/KnownIssues-macOS/
No other apple devices than those that has upgraded to iOS 17 seem to be affected.
I really hope, and have faith in, that Apple takes a good look at this and fix it as soon as possible.
I don't know what causes this but I think that there is something in the mDNS and / or network part of iOS 17 that is different from the earlier versions of iOS and all MacOS versions.
Confirmed on my end too. We use mDNS and it has stopped working completely for any device on iOS or iPadOS 17. Rebooting our PaperCut mobility print server and troubleshooting from there has yet to fix the problem, and now it seems that PaperCut has made public that it is something Apple is aware of. All of the macOS devices (including Sonoma) still work, as well as any iOS/iPadOS on 16 or lower.

I
My family’s all 8 Apple devices on the latest versions of iOS work perfectly with AirPrint. If your’s doesn’t it is something in your devices or network.
This worked. Thank you! I turned off the VPN before doing the steps to turn off the printer, my iPad and router, etc. When I turned the (Norton) VPN back on and tried to print, no luck. I will see if I can leave the VPN simply turned off, or if I have to delete the profile (which I will have to learn how to do . . . hang on, learning curve ahead!)

I keep having problems with it saying no printers, then I see the printers and they don’t print. There’s something up with either my 15 pro or iOS 17.0.3 because both my printers have troubles now.
Please read and follow the guidance in the Apple Recommended post at the top of this page.
But before you do that, if you use VPN delete the VPN profile and app, and see if that resolves the problem.

It is relevant. I have used AirPrint daily, and I’ve had nothing but trouble with my new phone. I don’t consider it a coincidence. It works fine on my spouse’s phone that’s a 13. I’ve had it work on my phone about 5% of the time, and that shouldn’t happen.

Have you completed all of the troubleshooting steps I posted, that solved the problem for the other users in this 3 page thread?
Yes, I did the standard turn everything off and on. What’s so puzzling is that one thing did print on my ink jet, I thought it was all fixed, then my second document wouldn’t print on the laser or ink jet that just worked. It’s nonsense. I have no VPN.
i did all the above: even called my printer tech and my internet tech . The Apple internet tech suggested to go into general , and scroll to the bottom then reset the network. Total fix for frustrated me! It’s weeks later and I’m still printing seamlessly .
I’ll try it, but I swear I’ve done this a couple of times in the last week. It shouldn’t print one minute and decide not to print the next. I see the printers, they just don’t do anything. It’s bizarre that it selectively works on sequential print requests.
The common advice is to restart everything, as Lawrence Finch has been stating, but he's failing to point out that, 1, it won't work for everyone, and 2, it wont work at your workplace.
Despite Lawrence's ridged (scripted perhaps? I do question his qualifications, as any qualified IT support person knows, being so ridged, only provides bad support) responses, this is an Apple bug that Apple need to fix.
A necessary update.
A day or so later, I was unable to select my printer. So I followed all the steps again, this time shutting down my router. Now it is working consistently, with one remaining anoyance. My phone keeps forgetting the printer, meaning I have to reselect it.
