AirPrint not working after iOS 17 Update

I updated my iphone yesterday. I wanted to print an email I received from Gmail. When I tried to print I received the message "no AirPrint Printers Found"

Do the following, i this order:

  • Turn off the printer
  • Turn off your phone
  • Turn off your router for 15 seconds
  • Turn on your router
  • Turn on your phone and wait for it to connect to Wi-Fi
  • Turn on the printer

This should restart the BonJour network that manages printer connectivity.

Note that is probably just one of these that needs to be done, but figuring out which one will take longer than just doing them all.

Both my iPhone and iPad have iOS 17 and they both still print.

For me this seems printer dependent. I can’t get it to work on any of my IOS 17 devices in combination with a Samsung 2675 printer, while it simply works on devices that have not been upgraded, proving bonjour is working just fine. Suggested steps do not resolve the issue.

However, on a visit to a household with a more recent HP printer, airprint on my IOS 17 device was working just fine.

Looks to me Apple has dropped some backward compatibility with this upgrade which they need to fix… or HP needs to provide a firmware fix for the Samsung printer.

This does not seem to be an isolated problem for a few users.

Even enterprise solutions have this issue after that their iOS clients have upgraded to iOS 17 for example this:

https://www.papercut.com/kb/Main/KnownIssues-macOS/

No other apple devices than those that has upgraded to iOS 17 seem to be affected.

I really hope, and have faith in, that Apple takes a good look at this and fix it as soon as possible.

I don't know what causes this but I think that there is something in the mDNS and / or network part of iOS 17 that is different from the earlier versions of iOS and all MacOS versions.

Confirmed on my end too. We use mDNS and it has stopped working completely for any device on iOS or iPadOS 17. Rebooting our PaperCut mobility print server and troubleshooting from there has yet to fix the problem, and now it seems that PaperCut has made public that it is something Apple is aware of. All of the macOS devices (including Sonoma) still work, as well as any iOS/iPadOS on 16 or lower.

What happened when you followed the steps in the Apple Recommended article at the top of this page, that worked for everyone who tried it?
  1. I've just been through all 4 pages and there is no "Apple Recommended article" at the top of this "page".
  2. The restart instructions have not worked for everyone who tried it, and doesn't work in a work place.
  3. Please stop providing bad information related to an Apple bug, the advise is, try restarting everything, and if that doesn't work, report it to Apple through one of the Feedback methods available as it is a bug.

Millions of users: Because if millions of users have any specific problem there will be thousands of posts about it and articles in all of the major trade press sites.

As you can’t go back to iOS 16 if you spent time troubleshooting rather than wasting time explaining why you can’t troubleshoot you can almost certainly fix it.

BTW, have you updated to iOS 17.1, released today? And have you deleted VPN profiles?

Bit of an update. My Samsung printer fails to print in a different way from that which others are reporting. It is shown on the phone, and appears to print successfully (I don't get the 'No Airprint printers found' error) - indeed the printer springs into life. But when it prints, I get a sheet of paper with this error printed instead of the document:

URF ERROR - Incomplete Session by time out

Experimenting with workarounds - some of the suggestions in this thread do work for me, but not for long. I have not found a simpler workaround which remains reliable. This morning, first print failed with above error, toggling flight mode and wifi, and trying again did work. But no longer. Now I am only getting errors - though rebooting just the phone does then allow me to print.

A bit of a puzzle and I look forward to a fix.

I have this same issue with my Canon G7000 series. I have followed all recommended steps including updating printer software, checking and disabling any VPN’s. I can get AirPrint to work only after completely resetting my printer to factory settings and reconnecting to my WiFi network every time I want to print, it works and then a little later or the next day it stops working again. The printer is connected to WiFi and worked before 17.1 without issue but not since then, update 17.2 did not resolve the issue. I have during this same time been able to connect to a Brother Printer but not to my Canon G7000. Perhaps this is an issue between Canon and Apple in terms of compatibility, but we have to suffer until there is a fix available. Reading through this thread I think the bug has been developed by Apple and needs to be corrected, before 17.1 my G7000 worked just fine. APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE!

I too have Samsung Xpress printer. Printing via Airprint has been hit and miss since iOS 17.1. I found a reboot of the phone more often than not would reenable the ability to print, but not for long. Printing from (mobile) Word has been fairly reliable through this period, but printing from the browser (Edge) has been very unreliable. Most printed pages from websites generated an error sheet on the printer - timeout error. Sometimes printing from another browser (Safari) would print when Edge wouldn't, but not always, so not a fix. Just as often it too would generate a timeout error page.

Before iOS 17, Airprinting onto my (still listed by Apple as supported for Airprint) Samsung printer was 100% reliable from all apps. Never failed. This step backwards has been very frustrating and quite a time sink. A negative impact on productivity.

Tried printing from my phone yesterday. No change from when I first reported it to Apple and via this discussion. Still cannot print, and still get the same "URF Incomplete session by time out" error on my (officially supported by Apple) Samsung printer I have from the start. I always update to the latest iOS version - currently running 17.3.1.

This problem has gone on for a long time now - and is still causing me problems. Basically having to use another device to print anything - a Windows 11 laptop has never failed to print correctly.

I would strongly recommend you do NOT reset network settings as some people have suggested in this thread. I did this - not only did it not fix the problem - but losing all my saved Wi-Fi passwords has been way more inconvenient than not being able to print at home from my phone. Some venues I visit regularly I can only get a connection via Wi-Fi, and every one of them has had to be re-entered which in many cases has required digging out the router and reading the label etc.

I would NOT buy a new printer, as it appears just from my experience that they are SLOWLY fixing the problems as they roll out new updates. The 17.4 although NOT LABELED for this issue, fixed my problem of being able to once again be able to PRINT FROM THE PHOTO APP which just THRILLED ME since it was adversely affecting my work for many many months, but appears FIXED NOW. Perhaps in the NEAR FUTURE, they will FIX YOUR PROBLEM TOO, I HOPE! Call the tech support and have them issue you a case number so their tech staff can specifically know and address it. It appears they are targeting specific issues and addressing them as they become capable of doing so.....

For months now I have been fighting to print anything from my iPad Air and iPhones which was working fine until IOS 17, and now finally discovered this thread here and can add my experience that I can only print from my old replaced router network that I use for guests only but to AirPrint from my new (approx. 1 year), router that no longer AirPrints with my IOS devices.

I have the same problem with an HP ENVY 4522 and my CANON MG 6320 printer.

I have to either switch wifi networks to enable printing or sent stuff to my Windows laptop as a workaround real nuisance but it works (fortunately don’t print much), and needless to say that Apple has been getting some choice words from me lately also my iPad is a recent one so are our phones.

Am thinking about gonna try a new printer and see what happens…….

Definitely think that Apple is the cause of this misery though!
