Merged Voicemails after IOS 17 Update

My wife and I share an Apple ID but have different cell phone numbers. We both have iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When I updated to iOS 17, yesterday, I lost all ability to make changes on the Apple ID (the picture got grayed out in Settings). Can't even enter it.

When she upgraded to iOS 17, today, our voice mail gots merged. When someone leaves a VM on her phone, it shows up on mine. Same as leaving a VM on mine, it shows up in hers. When I delete a VM on my phone, it gets deleted on hers and vice-versa.

How do we need to change to get back to separate voice mails? Please help.

The issues were two fold and resolved in a Genius Bar session.

  1. The grayed out Apple ID was caused by me turning on Content & Privacy Restrictions, Not Allowing Passcode Changes and Account Changes, and putting in a different 4-Digit Passcode. Once, I turned it off, the Apple ID under Settings, stopped being grayed out and it was back to normal. BTW, the reason I put I put in this 4-digit passcode is because of this report from WSJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCfb9Wizq9Q;
  2. The only way out of the merge voice mail (calls, photos, etc.) is to create a different Apple ID and do Family Sharing.

Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem but it isn’t me sharing an account with someone. I personally have 2 iPhones. I have one that is my personal phone and one that is my work phone. I do not want to have my work voicemails on my personal phone and I do not want my personal voicemails on my work phone.

However, I also don’t want to have to pay for a family Apple Music to be able to listen to my music at work as well as at home just because I have 2 devices.

Is there any solution that allows me to separate my work and personal phone features but not have to pay for Apple Music twice other than abandoning Apple Music and using Spotify?

My source was direct in the reply above. eelsswimmer38 said he was going to use Spotify instead of Apple Music if he had to create a separate appleID.

Realistically, a company that is worth billions is not going to be much concerned about one or even a couple of thousand people switching to Spotify. Unless/until enough people do to affect the bottom line, Apple doesn't have a financial incentive to make changes. They may have other reasons to do so, especially if they get enough complaints.

parental control offers no ability to talk to the child about what they couldn’t download. Regardless, apple is obviously not concerned about their customers, to make such a drastic change without any heads up. And then to deny it is a problem! As a widow full time working mother I have not the time to continually go through the significant changes apple throws our way! But have to keep an I phone for work! I did share my issues on the apple website but wanted to make others aware of how this affects children as well!

The fact is you are in the minority and millions of parents use Parental Controls on their child's iPhone, with them having their own Apple ID.

I'm glad you shared your thoughts with Apple. I don't think Apple will flex on this, but if enough people complain, Apple has been known to make a change. Whether they will with this, only Apple knows.
