Merged Voicemails after IOS 17 Update

My wife and I share an Apple ID but have different cell phone numbers. We both have iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When I updated to iOS 17, yesterday, I lost all ability to make changes on the Apple ID (the picture got grayed out in Settings). Can't even enter it.

When she upgraded to iOS 17, today, our voice mail gots merged. When someone leaves a VM on her phone, it shows up on mine. Same as leaving a VM on mine, it shows up in hers. When I delete a VM on my phone, it gets deleted on hers and vice-versa.

How do we need to change to get back to separate voice mails? Please help.

The issues were two fold and resolved in a Genius Bar session.

  1. The grayed out Apple ID was caused by me turning on Content & Privacy Restrictions, Not Allowing Passcode Changes and Account Changes, and putting in a different 4-Digit Passcode. Once, I turned it off, the Apple ID under Settings, stopped being grayed out and it was back to normal. BTW, the reason I put I put in this 4-digit passcode is because of this report from WSJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCfb9Wizq9Q;
  2. The only way out of the merge voice mail (calls, photos, etc.) is to create a different Apple ID and do Family Sharing.

Thanks for your help!

I'm usually NOT unhappy with the yearly major updates. Things change for sure. Most of the changes are ones I can live with and ultimately find they sometimes enhance the user experience. But for many, change isn't always welcome and some have difficulty adjusting or appreciate the changes. One thing in life we can count on is change. Next year, when iOS 18 rolls out, there will more changes. And the year after that and so on and so on. Apple has to continually make changes to keep up with things. But not everyone will always like them.

What is they say? "You can't please all the people all the time."

No This is not an "Apple problem". This is an "Attoriphone" problem...

Not to mention the fact that if your "underage son" is under the age of 13, and you are sharing your Adult Apple ID with them, you are potentially in violation of the law. You need to create a child ID for him using family sharing. There are restrictions on what information can be collected for usage by children. By allowing him to use your ID, you are violating the law by allowing his activity to be tracked by service providers and developers.

Stop sharing Apple ID's is the most ridiculous answer ever. So, separate our photos, music, pay for individual subscriptions? really? Might as well put our 3 AppleTV's on individual accounts as well as the iPad and just pay for everything individually on each device to. How about Apple lay off the updates for a year or two until this gets sorted out? Everything was working fine til update 17, which is useless, and only a downgrade in service and convenience.

Been using iPhones since day one and used one Apple id for all my devices never had them share a single voice message before I just got an iPhone 15. So now I see all my wifes messages and she sees mine. Why would they make this something you can't turn off. That doesn't make sense to me it is two different phones and numbers why would they start sharing the messages? The feature could be handy in some situations but I should be able to turn it off if I want to.

You can certainly have many apple devices under one ID up until now and it kept the voice mails separate. So why did they change that... You can set an iPad or MacBook to not see or get text messages from an iPhone so why is this any different?

I would call it a band-aid because of Apples arrogance and need to control everyone's UX... That voicemail is tied to a phone number not an Apple ID. Apple does not provide the voicemail service. The carrier does. This is Apple trying to take services away from the carrier just like facetime and imessage... Voice is next, and you will have no idea what carrier you are making calls over, or whether you have voice QCI.

How did you create separate Apple IDs without losing all the stuff on your phone?

Or changing info on other phone. I created a separate one a couple months ago on my phone and it changed it changed on my husbands. Unless we’re changing the wrong thing. We literally have never had any issues using same id ever until update 17. Now our voicemails and phone calls are showing on each others phones.
