Merged Voicemails after IOS 17 Update

My wife and I share an Apple ID but have different cell phone numbers. We both have iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When I updated to iOS 17, yesterday, I lost all ability to make changes on the Apple ID (the picture got grayed out in Settings). Can't even enter it.

When she upgraded to iOS 17, today, our voice mail gots merged. When someone leaves a VM on her phone, it shows up on mine. Same as leaving a VM on mine, it shows up in hers. When I delete a VM on my phone, it gets deleted on hers and vice-versa.

How do we need to change to get back to separate voice mails? Please help.

The issues were two fold and resolved in a Genius Bar session.

  1. The grayed out Apple ID was caused by me turning on Content & Privacy Restrictions, Not Allowing Passcode Changes and Account Changes, and putting in a different 4-Digit Passcode. Once, I turned it off, the Apple ID under Settings, stopped being grayed out and it was back to normal. BTW, the reason I put I put in this 4-digit passcode is because of this report from WSJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCfb9Wizq9Q;
  2. The only way out of the merge voice mail (calls, photos, etc.) is to create a different Apple ID and do Family Sharing.

Thanks for your help!

So if I want to create a new ID for my wife (which I realize is the best thing to do), is there a way to save everything on her phone (apps, texts, etc)?

I used the following to create a separate ID for my work phone. It should work for you. You should not have to erase her phone.

all my info was saved, including past texts, notes, etc.

Using different AID for two phone for same person is NOT the intent of seamless sharing of devices that Apple proudly displays on all their ads and marketing.

You're right, the point of using one Apple ID on all of your devices is so that all of your information is shared seamlessly. And that's what people are getting. But it's not what the people posting here want. They want to NOT share all of their information. They want to not share call logs, not share voice mail, not share other things. If they don't want seamless sharing, they need to use more than one Apple ID.

Because Apple made a change in iOS 17. Why? We can't speak for Apple on this user to user only forum.

Yes, the merged call lists is new. But every person you share an Apple ID with has had the ability to read your text messages, change your Apple ID Password, get access to your Apple Wallet, delete photos, notes, files, etc. View your browsing history, delete your account altogether. So many things people can do by sharing the same Apple ID.

You seemingly weren't bothered by this, so why would you be bothered by someone having the ability to see the phone numbers you've called or received calls from?

But Apple has maintained for over a decade now that Sharing an Apple is NOT recommended and has advised that each family member needs to have their own unique Apple ID --> Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID - Apple Support

Hi Eelsswimmer38. I am in the same position with exception that I already have the family plan. 2 phones for work and personal. Never had an issue with any vms until I think it was 17.0.2 or 3. I even had different carriers so it’s perplexing to me how they merged.

technically the work account (Verizon) overwrote the personal vm (TMobile) saved ones. I started following this thread a while ago and found no answer.

just 2 days ago I created another appleID for my work phone. It really sucks. I enjoyed being able to share iMessages between phones which gave me ability to leave my work phone at home sometimes. Can’t do that anymore.

I guess for you, it’s 10.99 for music and 16.99 for family music.

I’m having the same issue with my wife’s and my iPhones. It’s definitely an Apple IOS 17 issue. We do both share the same Apple ID, but we did the same before updating to IOS 17 and didn’t have this issue. I’m on Verizon and my wife is on T-Mobile.

Yes, it may well be an iOS 17 thing, but it's working as Apple wants it to work, so you either live with merged calls/voicemail if you insist on using the same Apple ID on both iPhones or you do want recommends and separate the two phones so each one has its own Apple ID. That's your choice.

I did this on both my husband's and my phone. Unfortunately, it did not work. We are still both getting each other's voicemails.

Unless you stop sharing an Apple ID, it is likely that this will continue to be a problem. And, if not this, something else. Apple does not intend Apple IDs to be shared and thus does not take that into consideration when making changes or updating.
