Merged Voicemails after IOS 17 Update

My wife and I share an Apple ID but have different cell phone numbers. We both have iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When I updated to iOS 17, yesterday, I lost all ability to make changes on the Apple ID (the picture got grayed out in Settings). Can't even enter it.

When she upgraded to iOS 17, today, our voice mail gots merged. When someone leaves a VM on her phone, it shows up on mine. Same as leaving a VM on mine, it shows up in hers. When I delete a VM on my phone, it gets deleted on hers and vice-versa.

How do we need to change to get back to separate voice mails? Please help.

The issues were two fold and resolved in a Genius Bar session.

  1. The grayed out Apple ID was caused by me turning on Content & Privacy Restrictions, Not Allowing Passcode Changes and Account Changes, and putting in a different 4-Digit Passcode. Once, I turned it off, the Apple ID under Settings, stopped being grayed out and it was back to normal. BTW, the reason I put I put in this 4-digit passcode is because of this report from WSJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCfb9Wizq9Q;
  2. The only way out of the merge voice mail (calls, photos, etc.) is to create a different Apple ID and do Family Sharing.

Thanks for your help!

After spending four hours chatting and then talking to ATT with no solution, I called my local ATT Store and chatted with a worker there. After spending some time thinking about it, she suggested both phones turn off Live Voicemail (Under Phone in Settings). So far, I believe this did the trick. If it was that easy, I wasted five hours today online, and chatting, and calling. I really hope this is the solution.

*This worked for about two hours and then it started all over again. Fix this please!

Again: This "problem" is NOT a "problem". It is working as designed. Just because you don't like it, does not make you "right". You are wrong. You should NOT be sharing an ID. It doesn't matter whether you have ever had problems because of that in the past. The fact is, they should NEVER be shared. So long as you continue to do so, we can NOT help you.

The ONLY answer is to STOP SHARING AN ID. If you don't like it, that's too bad. Find another forum on the Internet where people will tell you what you want to hear instead of the truth.

In the mean time, you are welcome to send feedback to Apple as has been suggested here multiple times.

Don't hold your breath waiting for them to change it.

The previously merged VMs did not clear up and had to be manually removed. Also be sure to turn off the cloud phone setting. You should test with new VMs after checking and turning off your cloud setting for phone (also contacts and other settings if applies) and will notice that the calls route properly and won’t delete VMs on shared phones when removed by one. This 17.1.2 update definitely fixes the issue.

Incorrect. Voicemail is a service provided by the carrier. If you change the PIN you do it on their service. The phone only holds the stored messages that are local. Some carriers you need to go further to their actual service to fully delete older messages so they clear out and not leave you with any storage so people can leave new VMs.

Yes, Voicemail is a carrier service. Up to a point. Visual Voicemail, the transcription you see on your phone, requires Apple's services. You might try contacting your carrier and seeing if they can turn off Visual Voicemail. That would mean you would no longer see the transcriptions, and that might take Apple out of the Voicemail equation. I don't know that it would stop the voicemail sharing or not and I don't plan on testing it myself. But, if this is that important to you, it's worth a shot.

IMHO - this does seem to be Apple OS related issue as my two devices both share voicemails to one another as they each get them, and the two phones are on two different carriers, AT&T for work and T-Mobile for personal.

It's not just your opinion. It is a fact that this is tied to people sharing an Apple ID.

Looking forward to a solution.

Use a different Apple ID for work and personal.

You're right, we don't know you or your needs. But whatever they are, there is really no other solution other than to stop sharing an Apple ID. It's a fact, which you nor anyone else can change. I get you don't like it, but that doesn't make it less a fact.

I did read in another place that turning off FaceTime may solve this for you. But if you do that, you'll never be able to use FaceTime. Maybe that won't be an issue for you.

As to me repeating myself, when you buy the forum, you can direct what others can say. I'm not violating any terms of use, so I'm as welcome to post as you are, whether you like my message or not.

Have a nice rest of the day.......

Agree....same...I have had several calls, live appts at the apple store and no one able to fix it!

No one can fix what is NOT broken, if you use the same Apple ID on multiple iPhones. Your phone is doing exactly what Apple intends it to do, which will only stop doing it when you stop using the same Apple ID on more than one iPhone.
