Merged Voicemails after IOS 17 Update

My wife and I share an Apple ID but have different cell phone numbers. We both have iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When I updated to iOS 17, yesterday, I lost all ability to make changes on the Apple ID (the picture got grayed out in Settings). Can't even enter it.

When she upgraded to iOS 17, today, our voice mail gots merged. When someone leaves a VM on her phone, it shows up on mine. Same as leaving a VM on mine, it shows up in hers. When I delete a VM on my phone, it gets deleted on hers and vice-versa.

How do we need to change to get back to separate voice mails? Please help.

The issues were two fold and resolved in a Genius Bar session.

  1. The grayed out Apple ID was caused by me turning on Content & Privacy Restrictions, Not Allowing Passcode Changes and Account Changes, and putting in a different 4-Digit Passcode. Once, I turned it off, the Apple ID under Settings, stopped being grayed out and it was back to normal. BTW, the reason I put I put in this 4-digit passcode is because of this report from WSJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCfb9Wizq9Q;
  2. The only way out of the merge voice mail (calls, photos, etc.) is to create a different Apple ID and do Family Sharing.

Thanks for your help!

Same issue! Apple denies the issue has anything to do with them! All last week I spoke with five different Apple supervisors as well as went to two different stores and they all blamed the carrier. I’ve called AT&T and spoke with five different supervisors and they can’t figure out the issue, blaming Apple for the problem. I even went to the AT&T store for four hours and they couldn’t accomplish anything as well. This is absolutely ridiculous, and definitely a privacy concern. Apple has told me has nothing to do with Apple ID because the voicemail is set to each specific phone.

I used to share an Apple ID, now that we've separated them and each family member has a different Apple ID, my Apple ID works across all my devices - 2 Macs, iPhone, Watch - meaning the devices are synched. If a SMS is read in one, it's read in all others. Same with deleted or updated contacts, calendar dates, etc. etc.

Same situation with other family members and their unique Apple IDs and their devices.

The problem is a second iPhone like I have. This is the problem. Everything was still seamless like you described. Changed in iOS 17

Actually, you are incorrect. This problem did not occur prior to ios17 as everybody but you have stated on here… ios17 caused these VM and texting issues..and btw, i have shared my apple id since 2007 or whenever it first was introduced and spoken with Apple several times… never suggested separating

Call logs being shared has been reported for a couple of years now. And, with every iOS update, some workaround that people used for sharing Apple IDs seems to stop working. But, because Apple doesn't support sharing of Apple IDs, they don't view this as a problem.

That doesn’t make any sense. Can’t have different IDs for all my devices!

That depends on who uses all the devices. If you own an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, HomePod and Mac, yes, you would use the same Apple ID on all the devices you use, so the data is easily accessible between the devices. But, if you own multiple iPhone or let other people use your Apple ID on the devices they use, each person should have their own, unique Apple ID. I do see where someone who uses a work phone and personal phone may be inconvenienced if they use the same Apple ID on both iPhones. But I don't understand why someone would use their personal Apple ID on a work phone to begin with. That often gives employers access to ones personal information. I would NOT want my employer to have access to any of my personal data.

So I just turned off all iCloud options and then signed out of my AID. Then created hers and signed back in. I was able to keep everything on the phone and so far no real issues. I think regarding apps we only had one that was paid for so I’m thinking I’ll just delete and then re download it and use family sharing. The picture thing has been a bit wonky but I’m working on a shared album. Ultimately I wish I had just started her from the beginning with her own ID but we’re talking like 10-15 years ago and I wish I knew a lot of things I know now back then.

I am not incorrect. If you use the same Apple ID on two iPhones, Apple sees them as the same in terms of data, which includes phone call logs and voicemail. You can disagree with me all you wish, but it's a fact and whether you use 5 different carriers on 5 different phones all using the same Apple ID, the call logs and voicemails will be shared among all five devices.

I am not defending Apple, nor commenting on whether how they are doing this is right or wrong. It's how Apple chose to do it. I get you may not like this. So feel free to share your thoughts with Apple here --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Not one person here has anything to do with Apple, nor how Apple chose to design the user interface on any Apple products.
