Merged Voicemails after IOS 17 Update

My wife and I share an Apple ID but have different cell phone numbers. We both have iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When I updated to iOS 17, yesterday, I lost all ability to make changes on the Apple ID (the picture got grayed out in Settings). Can't even enter it.

When she upgraded to iOS 17, today, our voice mail gots merged. When someone leaves a VM on her phone, it shows up on mine. Same as leaving a VM on mine, it shows up in hers. When I delete a VM on my phone, it gets deleted on hers and vice-versa.

How do we need to change to get back to separate voice mails? Please help.

The issues were two fold and resolved in a Genius Bar session.

  1. The grayed out Apple ID was caused by me turning on Content & Privacy Restrictions, Not Allowing Passcode Changes and Account Changes, and putting in a different 4-Digit Passcode. Once, I turned it off, the Apple ID under Settings, stopped being grayed out and it was back to normal. BTW, the reason I put I put in this 4-digit passcode is because of this report from WSJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCfb9Wizq9Q;
  2. The only way out of the merge voice mail (calls, photos, etc.) is to create a different Apple ID and do Family Sharing.

Thanks for your help!

No one is assuming anything. We are telling you that Apple does not support shared Apple IDs, and never will again, it causes too many problems.

You can share Apple IDs as much as you want to, but you will have to live with the consequences of doing so. Children and families especially; do you want your children to see all of your texts, all of your photos, all of your emails, your gift lists, your passwords, and a host of other data on your phone? Do you want your significant other to know absolutely everything about you?

And I hope it doesn’t ever be an issue for you, but shared Apple IDs have been a disaster in cases of divorce proceedings.

If you are doing it to spy on your children, remember they are also spying on you also.

Yes it’s so annoying people assuming that what works for them works for everyone. Our point is the system doesn’t work for us anymore and it’s an excessive amount of people with the exact same 1 complaint. If that’s not your complaint then why are you here. It’s a simple fix. We should be able to keep it the way it was if that’s what we choose. Children, families or business needs. We had it working for us. Respect that.

Maybe you should respect that this is a user to user only forum and not one person here works for Apple or had anything to do with this change. Getting annoyed at a user who is simply telling you the truth that Apple does NOT support sharing Apple IDs is kind of pointless. Apple does NOT support sharing Apple IDs. We can't change that. You either have to adapt and do what Apple recommends or accept the consequences of sharing an Apple ID.

Admonishing someone on this forum for not sharing your view is just plain wrong. Anyone is welcome to post and in fact Lawrence has done more to help people understand how to separate users from sharing the same Apple ID more than Apple has. Maybe respect that. Or you can buy the forum, then you can tell people what and when they can post.

Otherwise, if you want to express your annoyance at someone, express it to Apple. You can use this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Apple did change the rules. In the early days there was no family sharing and they gave no instruction on what do. Later they came out with family sharing said how to make that work. But it was too late. We had lots of apps on our phone. Then iCloud changed everything again and not for the better. Software should adapt to my lifestyle; I shouldn’t have to adapt to it.

I have the same issue, i have a work phone and a personal phone both have different apple id since years past because of the annoying syncing of iphones and it worked well until this ios17 came in it all of a sudden merged my voicemails and sometimes calls. When i have them both sode by side it makes this wierd syncing.

its very annoying i have ti manually delete each voicemails thats not for work or my personal.

Is there any fix to this???

kilted Tim, I do not share another ID with another person. I have 2 phones with same ID. Phones are on 2 different carriers (TMobile and Verizon). Never had an issue with VMs until now with one of these iOS 17 updates.

from what I understand VM service is attached to the carrier and stored locally on your phone. How my work vms took over my personal vms is beyond me

What’s missing in this conversation is that there are multiple family sharing use cases. Apple might want to consider providing a solution that allows a Customer to choose from a list of things their family does (and doesn’t) want/need to share. I realize that could get really complicated really fast.

To Apple’s credit, their Family Sharing solution includes a lot of things. My family just doesn’t care about many of them (e.g., Apple Card). And, we want things that aren’t provided (e.g., shared Contacts).

So, we have hacked our own solution using a shared Apple ID across all 5 of our devices for several years. There have been glitches along the way, usually with major iOS releases (like merged voicemails with iOS 17). Those glitches have eventually worked themselves out with subsequent minor releases. Eventually - maybe this time - we won't be so lucky.

What seems to be missing in most of these posts is the understanding that Apple isn't a part of this conversation. This is a user-to-user technical support forum. Whether you like the way things, work, don't like the way the work or don't care, this is the way they work and no amount of discussion here will change it.

I used to share an Apple ID, now that we've separated them and each family member has a different Apple ID, my Apple ID works across all my devices - 2 Macs, iPhone, Watch - meaning the devices are synched. If a SMS is read in one, it's read in all others. Same with deleted or updated contacts, calendar dates, etc. etc.

Same situation with other family members and their unique Apple IDs and their devices.

You have chosen to make this an issue. I don't know who suggested this is an ATT issue, but Apple would not agree this an Apple issue. It's working now as they intended. And even as a parent, you don't need to share an Apple ID with your child. This is what Parental Controls were created for, which you should be using.

You son's phone need to be on its own Apple ID. Then you set up Parental Controls where you can monitor and manage what he downloads on his phone. This link explains what that means --> Use parental controls on your child's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Or continue as you are, but your phone calls and his phone calls and your voicemail messages as well as his are going to be merged.

You are more than welcome to share your thoughts with Apple here (keep in mind this is a user to user only forum and no one here works for Apple, has anything to do with how Apple chooses to design their software, and most certainly has no ability to change anything) --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

This is an absolutely awful function. I have a work and a personal phone tied to the same Apple ID and have always been able to keep them separate until iOS 17. Now I have to create a new Apple ID for my work because I can't restrict calls, voicemails and contacts from showing up on my personal phone.
